5.0 out of 5 stars On the RLS trail, 6 Nov 2014

My previous copy of this - from school days - was falling apart! RLS is a longtime hero of mine - I've visited Vailima in Samoa and have lately travelled without a donkey through the Cevennes, following the RLS trail and it was such a joy to have his account to hand and to realise he was God's gift to the Cévennes National Park tourist board! Now for San Francisco and Monterey.......

5.0 out of 5 stars Revisiting Clochemerle, 11 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Clochemerle (Paperback)
It must be at least 50 years since I first read Clochemerle - and it was quite simply great fun to visit it again. Knowing France as well as I do now, I could appreciate just what a remarkably clever spoof this is of local politics, at all levels.

3.0 out of 5 stars RLS's wife, 16 Aug 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Fanny Stevenson had a curiously complex personality and it would be easy to accept Frank McLynn's evident dislike of her in his 1996 biography of Robert Louis Stevenson. He considered that her mental instability contributed to the stresses and premature death of RLS. Alexandra Lapierre in this biography tells Fanny's extraordinary story in a much more sympathetic light and at times would seem to gloss over the difficulties that Fanny created for the author and particularly in alienating his closest friends, by her extravagance, and in the pressure she seems to have put on him to make her son Lloyd a partner in some of his works. In fact, Fanny's daughter Belle Strong seems to have been a far more competent and stable aid to her step-father than any other member of the family. By the end of the book I was beginning to wonder what on earth would have happened to Fanny and her family if she hadn't had the luck to marry a man with prospects of an earned and inherited fortune.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and revealing., 18 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a remarkably well researched and written exposé of what life was like in Britain before the arrival on the scene of the late Baroness Thatcher. It really ought to be required reading for anyone who was not politically aware by 1979 and yet who were prepared to join the anti-Thatcher protesters at the time of her death.

I have always wanted the opportunity to read Flaubert in his own language - so now have no excuse! The clear purity of his French makes his work so very accessible.

4.0 out of 5 stars Exposing a centuries old mythology!, 18 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an excellent account of the group known as the Pilgrim Fathers - and a most interesting light is shed on the mythology that has evolved on both sides of the Atlantic and still surrounds their arrival in the New World.

5.0 out of 5 stars Liberation for Bertie?, 2 Sep 2011
The latest in the 44 Scotland Street saga is yet another fine example of the skill of Alexander McCall Smith in continuing to interweave the lives of so many diverse characters - and leaves the reader wondering if Big Lou really will marry her Angus farmer and has the dreadful Irene really begun to see put-upon Bertie as a little boy rather than as a project, questions that has this reader longing to know what happens next!
