5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 1 Sept. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A highly useful app which gives very accurate local information, even for my home in a tiny village in France. I particularly like the now_to_+48hr video sequence of rainfall which is really useful for planning the next couple of days ahead. Recommended!

Dean's Gift Book of Cowboys and Indians
Dean's Gift Book of Cowboys and Indians
by Janet Grahame-Johnstone
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Our grandson loves it!, 9 Feb. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The book was purchased for our 4-year old grandson, who loves dressing up and was given an "Indian" costume for Christmas. We found it really hard to locate a book on "Cowboys and Indians" - the genre doesn't figure any more in children's play (with the possible exception of "Woody", Buzz Lightyear's mate!), but what a shame - "Spiderman" and his cronies don't teach today's children anything much about history, whereas Cowboys and Indians give a real insight into America's (often chequered!) past.

This book is excellent, with good illustrations, text and descriptions - for example of the style and function of the clothing worn by both 'sides'. It has rapidly become one of our grandson's favourite bedtime books and he loves to tell you what's coming up on each page, so it has clearly captivated his imagination.

The previously-owned book arrived very quickly and in excellent conditon, and we thoroughly recommend the supplier.

1.0 out of 5 stars The functionality is fine and the battery life good, 9 Feb. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Samsung E1200i black (Electronics)
Purchased to replace my wife's 9-year-old Nokia which had suddenly decided to 'lock-up' repeatedly, this little Samsung has found favour. My wife is not a 'power user' and simply requires straightforward device which - wait for it - just makes 'phone calls. She is not interested in being in constant connection with the rest of the planet's population (doesn't even bother much with 'texting') but she likes the bright, clear display and keypad.

The functionality is fine and the battery life good, but it lost a star for the rather flimsy back panel which comes adrift rather too easily, and also for the fiddly placement and access to the charger/comms port. And why does it need such a large connector? - twice the length of the Samsung Galaxy range!

Update - after about 9 months use, the device failed - it would frequently display "SIM Refreshing", wipe any text being entered (annoying!!) and flatten its own battery. It has been binned, so a complete waste of money. Rating reduced to zero stars!

2.0 out of 5 stars I really don't like this design, 9 Feb. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The "pop-up" design actually results frequently in "pop-out".

Whilst the case is well made and protects the 'phone while inside it, the pull tab actually tends to eject the 'phone, which then ends up on whatever surface it lands on - frequently a hard table or the floor, leading to disintegration of the 'phone - the back falls off and the battery is ejected. Whilst, very fortunately, the Samsung 'phone has so far survived this treatment, one day I suspect it won't - the design is quite flimsy. It's also annoying to have to key in the date/time again each time.

I am ditching this case in favour of a model with a fold-over tab secured by a magnet which gives a much more secure fastening, and I will never buy another pull-tab design.

There's a storage box below the armrests in my car, fitted with a 12V (cigar lighter) socket. The Fosmon charger now lives happily in there and is very useful for charging my Samsung 'phone on the move. The product works well - recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Caveat Emptor!, 29 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Be aware that this is very much "sprat to catch a mackerel" software! Given the sophistication of the software, the price of £24-ish is very attractive; that is also comes with 6 months "Premium Membership" of ancestry.com, taken in isolation is a real bargain.

However, after your six months 'free' membership, you will have to fork out £107.40 for an annual renewal subscription (more if you renew for a shorter period), and this can rise to £155.40 annually for "worldwide*" membership (required if you want to access, for example, details of sea passages to/from the Colonies). You are required to give card details and your renewal will be billed automatically unless you cancel before it is due.

If you opt to receive emails from Avanquest (authors of the software), you will receive frequent 'offers' of add-on software (fancier charts, etc.) and books on genealogy. So again, be aware that the cost of ownership of this software can be quite substantial. Check availability of these on Amazon, prices will probably be lower than Avanquest.

Having said all that, as a relative newcomer to the Family Tree game, I can say that you will almost certainly become hooked. Very hooked! The wealth and depth of information available is huge. The leaf icon attached to a person's name shows hints to searches which often yield good results; I rapidly built access to my greatx4 grandfather......

The user interface takes some getting used to so it is nice to find a manual included in the box. You will require good eyesight to read it! The manual is a good introduction to the software and is worth taking the time to read. One basic explanation missing from the manual is that the software's user interface sits on top of a database. I searched the manual including its index for a 'file/save' command before realising, like most databases, it is updated automatically every time a change is made.

As it stands all media (photographs, certificates, etc) are loaded into the same directory. I can see this rapidly becoming unworkable and confusing. The manual warns you that, if you move, you're likely to have problems.

The software is not faultless; I've had a nasty crash whilst merging a websearch, and it hung on me 75% through syncing with my online tree. Searches can be very slow and all too frequently result in the error: "The Website is too busy to show the webpage". This is not acceptable; Ancestry is charging significant amounts of money for subscriptions and should ensure that their investment in providing adequate technology is keeping up with demand!!

One annoying feature is that if your web search leads to an entry on the "worldwide*" database (typically, records in the US or Canada), you can't choose to 'ignore' these records, even if they are clearly not your relatives. To access these records, you have to bend your credit card again - once again, it's Goon Show time (Neddie Seagoon: "Open your wallet and say after me: help yourself!").

As I said, caveat emptor!

2.0 out of 5 stars Wasted my money, 18 Mar. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I purchased this expecting to get an upgrade path from version 10 (as Sony seems to issue new product numbers for what other manufacturers would call an upgrade). First thing that happened on attempting to install the software was the announcement that it would not run on my operating system - I run Windows XP, am perfectly happy with it, and don't want to spend weeks reinstalling the loads of software I already use, half of it probably wouldn't run on Windows 7/8 anyway.

OK, the 'fine print' does say it needs Windows 7 or 8 but that's the problem - it was in the fine print. If Sony (or any other manufacturer) makes this level of step-change between products, they should make it very much clearer.

Therefore a complete waste of money.

Logitech OEM S220 2.1 Speaker Black
Logitech OEM S220 2.1 Speaker Black

5.0 out of 5 stars Recommended, 1 Feb. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have now bought three of these speaker sets, the first for a PC I use for video editing and they produce a very good result. The second set I bought to improve the sound from a relatively small screen (19") Sony TV. The sound from the (tiny) built-in speakers was very poor with no depth - no bass, poor mid-range and tinny treble. The sound was improved out of all recognition by the addition of the Logitech speakers (connected via the TV's earphone outlet). The sound generated by the TV's amplifier is very good and the Logitech's give it life. The third set I purchased over Christmas for my daughter's family - same thing - small screen TV with hopeless sound from internal 'squeakers'. They love it.

Only one criticism, the UK price - the first two sets I bought in France for 19.99 euros (E L'Eclerc supermarket), around £16 at the time. The set bought at Christmas from Amazon was over £30 - the price I paid for two sets over here. :-(
