5.0 out of 5 stars Genius..., 16 Sept. 2005
Well. Rabbie Burns and Eddi Reader. One a genius poet, and the other the voice of an angel. Burns has been sadly neglected as a poet, and generally over sentimentalised when he is remembered, but Eddi Reader's phenomenal interpretation of a (tiny) selection of Burns' work can only help us understand what Burns was; a vital, living, lusty, hard drinkin' man in love with life.
Eddi Reader is possessed with one of the most arresting voices in modern times; equally fragile and delicate like a wee bird and as throaty and husky as a drunk hooker! I defy anyone to listen to her sing "Brose and butter", and not get some very naughty ideas! And at the same time listen to "Ye Jacobites" and not feel a sense of righteous indignation at anyone that wages war in the name of a doctrine... "Haunt a parents life wi bluidy war..." Care to name a few examples?
I have been a fan of Eddi Readers from the Fairground Attraction days and have seen her live more than once. I am proud to say that, on the strength of this album, I bought a copy of the Cannongate Burns, and am now a fan of oor Rabbie.
Burns and Reader. It just makes so much sense!

Good grief! All I can say is that this is the most original, unexpected, difficult, complex, and dense recording from Tom Waits that I have ever heard. I can't say I like it (yet) but it has left me awestruck. I'm sure, that given time, I'll find my way into it. After all "Alice" took a few listens. If you like music that defies all conventions, then buy this CD now. If you like Tom Waits, buy this CD now. If neither applies to you... then walk away now!

5.0 out of 5 stars If you value your humanity..., 22 Aug. 2004
I watched Schindler's List when it came out in the cinema. I had never heard 300 people weep before. 1993 was possibly Speilberg's best year, given that he directed Jurassic Park, and then this. Three hours of harrowing, compelling film making. Watch this and swear "never again..."

5.0 out of 5 stars A work of unmitigated genius, 2 Aug. 2004
This review is from: Rain Dogs (Audio CD)
If you ever want to get an understanding of just how varied Waits is, listen to, oh, Nighthawks At The Diner... then this. This is a dark, funny, difficult, and complex work; and is, to my mind, the first time Waits really let his nightmares loose. Listen to this album, stick with, listen to it in the dark midnight, in the car, in the bath. Pretty soon, you won't want to be without it. The imagery is downright "wrong", in the same way that a Lynch film is just "wrong", you know you shouldn't watch, but before you know it, you're hooked; Singapore is damn disturbing for instance. The musicianship is awesome - the broken melody of Tango 'Til They're Sore is incredible, the whole song sounds like it's about to collapse in on you, and magically manages to make it through.
Even if you're not a full on Waits nut, this is an essential purchase for anyone interested in music, and what it can be.
Buy it now!

5.0 out of 5 stars listen..., 8 Jun. 2001

Moondance is, like Astral Weeks, one of those albums that help you realise that there is quite a bit about life that you don't know. Van knows, listen, he'll help you learn. Into the Mystic, Caravan, Moondance, Crazy Love... absolutely timeless and beautiful songs each and every single one.
