4.0 out of 5 stars His house reflects a man of good taste and his life was a series of adventures, 23 July 2014

Fascinating story of the rise and fall of a financier, one of Charles VII's most able advisers and fund-raiser during the 100 years war.. Clearly an extremely capable and astute man of the late Middle Ages. Having seen his marvelously decorated mansion in Bourges I found it most informative to read about his life in this fairly brief biography. His house reflects a man of good taste and his life was a series of adventures, ending, astonishingly, on a Greek island. The cheapness of the paper and general presentation of the book were a slight disappointment.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very plausible picture is given of a woman of great strength who endured many difficulties, 3 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An extremely readable and enjoyable biography. A very plausible picture is given of a woman of great strength who endured many difficulties, such as her husband having a permanent and much loved mistress and also the problem of always being a non-royal foreigner in France. There was the early death of her husband and her role as regent for sons of very dubious character quality. This is all related sympathetically. There may be some things we will never know about her, but this book certainly gives a very lively account. There are occasional instances of clumsiness in English usage.

5.0 out of 5 stars ... brings new light on the subject and is a joy to read and mull over, 3 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
There are so many books on meditation yet here is one that brings new light on the subject and is a joy to read and mull over. The techniques are given with love and understanding of the meditator who can't manage to empty the mind. In fact the good news is that such a person need not empty the mind, but manage to meditate anyway. Beautifully written.

An incredibly informative account with a vast amount of detail and also references to other scholars. Writing style is clear and precise. However it makes heavy reading because it is so pedantic and plodding. Everything has equal value - from the smallest detail of fiscal reform to the dramatic death of Henri II, so there are no literary highs and lows. Every treaty signed is reported in smallest detail. It is therefore a book for the researcher or scholar but not attention-holding for the informed lay reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just a philosopher-gardener., 21 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This writer is unusual in that she is not only extremely well-read but uses her knowledge appropriately to highlight her thoughts, of which there are many original ones. She is not trying to sound grand, she is full of wonder and this is the greatest charm of the book - her unbounded delight in everything that grows. So everything she knows and observes is to the glory of all nature around her. Add to this the meticulous nature of a former librarian and you see that she researches everything painstakingly and very thoroughly. Her writing ranges from the informative - Latin names of all the plants quoted - to the beautiful, imaginative and poetic. This is not just another gardener's book. It is a profound description of one person's experience of life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful study of the complexity of human relations., 21 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The fact that all the characters are of different ages, different income brackets and from different walks of life makes it all the more interesting. We may have different values and points of view yet underlying this there is a common human factor that binds us, and although it can bring misunderstanding it can also lead to greater understanding and therefore to greater equality ultimately. Characters here are extremely well cast and all very plausible in their roles.

It is concise. It gives battle details and statistics. It also gives descriptions of the characters of the main participants which I find very interesting. I wonder if anyone ever thought how ridiculous the whole operation was. But I suppose they were mainly in it for the plunder.
