5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning return to form by Prince, 15 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Pretzelbodylogic (MP3 Download)
This is a perfect fusion of pop, rock and funk in the way only Prince knows how. Solid beat, sharp groove and diamond-edged riff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Technical comment on the sound mix, 17 Aug 2011
I purchased this Blu-ray and it presents a stellar performance by the band.

However, upon playing the disc, using the Dolby Digital 5.1 option setting, I noticed Ronnie James Dio's vocals came out of the Front Left and Right speaker channels (I'm using a 5.1 surround speaker system supplemented with a sub-woofer), but not the Centre speaker thus in fact giving a 4.1 surround sound mix. The surround sound mix in Blu-ray discs is normally calibrated so the main voice track will come out of the Centre speaker. Strangely, the sound comes out of the Centre speaker for the Eagle Rock introductory brand animation sequence and the similarly the voice track in all the bonus features on the disc comes out of the Centre speaker.

I contacted Eagle Rock and their production person in London confirmed that "4.1 audio is intentional - the audio was supplied mixed from the band."

5.0 out of 5 stars MGM (USA) edition comment, 3 Aug 2011
PLEASE NOTE - most of the bad reviews relate to the Optimum Home Releasing (UK) version of this movie, NOT the superior and well regarded MGM (USA) edition!

2.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre Blu-ray transfer, 1 July 2011
Being one of my favourite films of all time, I was eagerly awaiting the Blu-ray edition, but was severely disappointed as the quality of Blu-ray transfer. The manufacturer/production company have clearly made no attempt to restore/remaster the frames of film, as there are myriad white, glowing specks springing forth on most scenes. I compared the Blu-ray to the DVD Special Edition I had from 2005 and there is only a fractional improvement in the image resolution with the Blu-ray. To compound matters the DVD Special Edition bizarrely had more extra features. The Blu-ray does have a superior sound stage though, but it's not worth buying it for this alone.

This is not the first time a Blu-ray I've bought has not adequately surpassed the production quality of a DVD. There is no excuse for it, other than profiteering, as older films like Zulu are superlative on Blu-ray. The companies who own the rights to licence films for the Blu-ray market should demonstrate greater conscience and only release films on Blu-ray after a convincing restoration/remastering job from the original film production master.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great case back, useless screen protector, 7 Oct 2010
I purchased this item on the strength of other reviews and was delighted with the case back, which is comfortable and protects the phone on all sides. The enclosed screen protector was useless. You are supposed to be able to fix it to the screen by removing the paper covers on the adhesive tabs. I tried to remove the paper covering the tabs and it did not peel off, so I was unable to fix the screen protector. I reluctantly had no choice to return the product to Amazon for a refund.

1.0 out of 5 stars Visual and Audio Mediocrity, 13 Sep 2009
I was really looking forward to watching this movie on Blu-ray, but after doing so was filled with an overwhelming sense of mediocriy. Nothing about this Blu-ray adds anything to the remastered DVD, either visually or sonically. One could deduce this is down to a thoroughly indecent attempt at mastering for this medium.

They should withdraw this product, do it properly and re-issue it. Whoever is responsible for Blu-ray mastering production quality control at Warner Bros needs to be given a serious dressing down.

I know this is an old film, but it was digitally remastered at not inconsiderable expense in the recent past, so no excuses there. I have a Pioneer LX-91 Blu-ray player and high end Yamaha AV Receiver, so the equipment I'm using is not to blame.

If you want to see the full, glorious potential of Blu-ray as far as music video is concerned, I recommend, ZZ Top's, "Live from texas." It is the best I have seen; the TSRTS is easily the worst.
