4.0 out of 5 stars Good Yarn, 16 July 2009

Very good 'Period Piece' based upon a true story showcasing the emergent talent of Dirk Bogarde as an alternative to the famous 'Doctor' films he made during the 1950s and early 60's before he became more 'arty' than entertainment biased within European cinema. Some of his films during this period were very good, others in my humble opinion were not!.

As mentioned in other reviews, colour case but film is B&W and better for it as the transfer to DVD is sympathetic, evocative and of very good technical quality. This is not a 'Blockbuster' it's just a modest, simple, pleasing and most enjoyable 'British Wet Sunday Afternoon' indulgence.

(Slight 'location' spoiler coming up).

The film was predominantly shot in the South of France in the Maritime Alps behind the directors house! Its so well done though that you really would not know if you had not already read Bogarde's wonderful autobiographical books; better it must be said than much of his cinematic output.

He was indeed a truly gifted and much missed actor and author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hidden Gem Then - Still Wows Now, 4 July 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A truly great hidden 'gem'. Packed full of feeling and funk not to mention beautiful 'classical style' ballads and catchy curios! A brilliant mix! Being an ardent 'Beach Boys' fan I bought the original vinyl as an early 20-something and was 'blown away' all those years ago. It seems I've been waiting forever (no pun intended) for it to be re-released and finally it has arrived all 'cleaned up' complete with his second unreleased album 'Bambu' and bonus tracks too. I am in heaven! Seriously though, as our American cousins would all too often remark this IS a genuinely seminal/awesome work so beautifully re-packaged and presented that even a cynical 'oldie but mouldie' like me reared on gate-folds and free posters et'al was suitably impressed. Ignore the 1*, (as they say you always get one!) at the very least it is a solid 4*; just buy, listen and enjoy then make your own mind up.

4.0 out of 5 stars DTS Makes a Very Good CD Even Better, 1 May 2007

This review is from: Imagination [DTS] (Audio CD)
Perhaps a most obvious choice for 20 BIT/DTS Surround and boy does it work well! This highly polished, lush, flowing work says to me that Brian has to some extent turned full circle and re-visited those wonderfully innocent commercial (No its not a dirty word!) pop sounds of years gone by with their full flowing harmonies and crisp production which combine with todays superior studio/home technology to great effect. Its almost as if hes saying 'hey listen Iam still not bad at this sort of thing dont you think! Its glossy and squeaky clean but so is (was) California. Your Imagination, Cry, Lay Down Burden, Sunshine and the wonderfully uplifting Kokomo-esque South America are superb as are most of the tracks on this short (40mins) but delightfully sweet offering. Its sometimes nostalgic, its fun, its melancholy, its enjoyable easy-listening (No not another dirty word!). As mentioned the DTS literally adds another wonderful dimension to the CD. Ive been taking the original on my hols over the last few years and believe me lying on a beautiful beach somewhere in the Med listening to this is what I hope and believe heaven might be like! (PS Great value Amazon price too)
