I read this somewhere and thought this perfectly summed up what the music sounds like. "The music emerges as if from inside a mountain, where maidens sing to a sleeping boy amid the creaks, pings, drips and growls of melting ice and the coming spring."

Now I didn't write this, but I read it somewhere and thought it was really good, describing Nikolas' music well.

Here goes...

There seems to be a spate of these kind of records at the moment; stripped down singer-songwriter jams with an emphasis on the mid-60s, but that's not to say the stuff's no good. Far from it in fact, there's been some real gems in the last few months peaking notably with Findlay Brown's incredible `Separated by the Sea', and Nikolas Barrell's debut is yet another keeper. Stripping his songs down to the bare minimum yet keeping the structure and sound of The Kinks or the Who, Barrell's album manages somehow to retain a definite voice. It's so easy to get lumped into the whole `it sounds a bit like Jose Gonzalez' thing, and Barrell simply doesn't want to go down without a fight. The album kicks off triumphantly with arguably the best track, the poptastic `Further Apart'. I'm not saying this should be on a Mastercard or Sony Bravia advert any time but here's a track that really deserves to be heard by your mum and your dog - it's got what they call `crossover appeal'. The momentum is kept throughout and `The Gin Club' manages to be an incredibly cohesive listen and while the spotlight might not be shining on it, it deserves to be heard. Lovely stuff...

I had to write a review of this album - i felt a great urge to compel everyone to buy it.

It was only by chance that i got this cd though. I was shopping in Belfast last Monday and happened to walk past the local HMV store where i noticed Cara was doing a signing and playing a few songs, i thought i'd drop by when she was going to be there. Best chance meeting i've ever experienced. She played a couple of songs of this cd (three to be exact) accompanied only by her husband Sam. I stood there completely enraptured by this lady singing, (the review by Mojo is completely true).

Cara's music is exactly what i'd been looking for - proper traditonal Irish music - although updated for the masses. There's even a song there that's 300 years old (The Parting Glass). It was when i got home that i heard a song, which i do know is quite old, that hasn't left my cd player since. Itunes tells me its been played 31 times already. She Moved Through The Fair is by far the most hauntingly beautiful song i've (probably ever) heard. I did hear Bert Jansch and others cover this song but Cara has undoubtedly recorded the definitive version.

If there is anything you do this year please make sure it is buying this cd and any of her previous ones - that's what i've now done. I'd say it would go well with a bit of Fairport Convention, Bert Jansch, John Renbourne, Martin Carthy, Seth Lakeman (her brother-in-law), or any other folk music (traditional or otherwise) you can think of.

You know, I did always believe in taking chances...

5.0 out of 5 stars best cd he's made, 13 Nov 2008

This is easily the best cd he's made, the cd is full of Kelly Joe, an acoustic guitar and some sins that Kelly Joe has felt ok with making them into the blues, done with aplomb and skill! I'd say he's also one of (if not THE best) acoustic blues guitarist since Robert Johnson himself!

Definately buy this if your into anybody who plays the blues on his/her own with an acoustic guitar, in the vein of Skip James, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Robert Johnson etc.

I know it's quite dear probably everywhere you go, but if any of what ive said has made you think about buying this, GO FOR IT - take a chance! I'll let you thank me later... you simply can't be disappointed!

I'll start by saying this is probably my favourite Shawn Mullins album - and that's saying a hell of a lot as i love them all.
This is definately a worthwhile adition to any music collection that consists of music being played by actual instruments.

The music on this album is probably more like Souls Core than anything else, there are also elemnts of Matchbox 20, Hootie and the Blowfish and The Calling in there - most of the time though it's just Shawn and his guitar.

There are two songs on this album that, i think are above the rest - "For Shari" and "Canyons and Caverns". For Shari is a beautiful song, along the same lines of "You Mean Everything To Me" on Souls Core, beautiful lyrics and music - my most favourite song of his. "Canyons and Caverns" tells a really good story, it's kinda like reading the guys thoughts or memories. The line in this song where he sings "i am held captive by the big blue sky above me..." makes me both really happy and sends shivers up my spine... Excellent!

Now, this has been deleted and does cost a lot of money wherever you go, but please make sure you get this somehow - otherwise you'll miss out on Shawn's best work... honestly!

I actually only wanted to write this to recomend the album simply because of "For Shari" as i really love that song but anyone who's in love or who ever has been will relate to this mans music - any of it!

I cant recomend this highly enough!

I have to say i only got this because the song "Life is a Song" was used the final scenes of The O.C but when i took it home and listened to it properly i realised it was actually really good and Patrick is a really good song-writer; and as i took a chance on buying it without knowing anything else by him i'm glad it turned out well.
I'd catagorise it as a sort-of Country/Folk/Americana mix as the album has elements of Wilco, Son Volt, Neal Casal, Ryan Adams, Whskeytown, Gram Parsons, Matthew Jay, Nick Drake and even a wee touch of Hootie and the Blowfish in it - an amalgamation of them all - every song makes you happy.
Definitley try it out if you like Patrick's earlier cds or any of the artists i mentioned or even singer/songwriters in general - ones who have something to say, i promise you it's worth your while.

I just had to write about the marvel that is "I Dream A Highway" the last song on this cd, if there's one song you hear in your lifetime make it this one! it achingly beautiful, introspective, spine-tingling - simply put Brilliant!! worth the price of the cd alone and it's a song that i have been listening to non-stop all month!!

The cd in general honestly is brilliant! but Gillian really has outdone herself with "I Dream A Highway"!

HIGHLY recomended!

4.0 out of 5 stars darius does well!, 22 Mar 2008
This review is from: Back to Then (Audio CD)
I have to be honest i only bought this cd because i LOVE Hootie and the Blowfish and i found it in a bargin bin in a small record shop near where i live (only cost me about £3.)
I was very apprehensive about this as i had read a couple of reviews which said this was NuSoul, and that normally isnt my thing (also due to the fact that Snoop Dogg's singing on this cd aswell and he really annoys me), but as i sit and listen to it now i am pleasently suprised.
It is NOTHING at all like Hooties music, but from reading the liner notes i know Darius didnt want it to be. It's nothing terribly mind blowing or completely original but it is good fun. He set out to make an R'N'B record and i think hes done well, and to be fair he has such a good voice that i dont think it matters what he sings 'cause it'll always be good.

I'd say take a listen if (like me) you love Hootie's music and if you like a wide variety of music, that way you should probably be openminded enough to find something you like about it, something that draws you in; or simply if you like soul music in general. Granted this may not be to everyones taste but do give it a try as it is really worthwhile!

5.0 out of 5 stars He Can Do No Wrong, 18 Dec 2007
This review is from: Up Front & Down Low (Audio CD)
Like everyone else that's reviewed this cd before me i was a bit shocked when Teddy decided to cover mainly old country songs, and only putting one of his own songs on the cd, i had thought it couldn't be as good as his last couple of cds, but man was i wrong!
Actually the exact same has happened with this cd (for me) as the last.
I bought "Separate Ways" not even knowing who Teddy was, and after, at the most 2 days, fell in love with it; I couldn't believe it when it happened again.
I have got to say that Teddy has one hell of an ear for good melodies and songs.
Fair enough every song (bar one) is a cover of old country songs, but the way Teddy has played and arranged the songs themselves has made them completely his own.
I've spent the last, maybe 15 mins, trying to think of a worthy adjective to explain to anyone who reads this review just how good the cd actually is - but you know what? i simply couldn't! Absolutely brilliant will have to do for now.
I was also going to say to stay away if you don't like country songs (and by that i mean old, traditional country songs) but because of the way Teddy has arranged the songs there is something in this cd for everyone - literally.

In my book Teddy can do no wrong and i know now that i will, without a shadow of a doubt follow this guy for as long as he is recording music!!

When you buy this cd i can guarantee you that you will fall in love with it! Definitely one of the best albums of the year!

Yet another brilliant cd by Teddy!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the most original cds of 2004, 14 Dec 2007
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I originally got into Johns music by listening to the chili peppers, and after a while i just became mesmorised by johns guitar playing and decided to look into his musical history.
I started with this album.
It honestly is the most original and honest sounding cd to come out for years, that original that you cant properly categorize it.
I'd have to recommend it though if you liked his earlier solo cds, as it sounds nothing like anything by the Chili Peppers. The only person i can think of to even remotely compare it to would be bjork in terms of originality and being able to turn their hands to anything and pull it off.
He's also one of the nicest guys you could ever meet!
I'd say it's worth a listen or two if your in anyway interested in the man or his music, be prepared to give it a couple of listens though at the start and you will be rewarded.
"The greatest musician living and working today"!!
Brilliant!!!
