Warfare in the 20th Century: The Age of Global Conflict (Battle Zones)
Warfare in the 20th Century: The Age of Global Conflict (Battle Zones)
by Andrew Robertshaw
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Well-illustrated, informative children's history book, 25 Dec 2011
An interesting, well-written and well-illustrated children's history book. It contains information on the notable conflicts of the 20th century, from the Boer War right up until the First Gulf War. Each 'war' or event has a double-page spread with lots of information and full-colour pictures, including photographs of reenactors in army uniforms, in places.

The 18 events that are covered are: The Boer War; Russo-Japanese War, 1904-5; The Great War, 1914-18; Air warfare; War at sea; The Eastern front; German spring offensive, 1918; The Great War outside Europe; Second World War, 1939-45; The Battle of Britain; Russian Front, 1941-45; War in the Pacific; Battle of the Atlantic; Europe, 1944-45; Korea, 1950-53; The Cold War; Vietnam, 1965-72 and Gulf War, 1991. A timeline, glossary and an index round off an excellent book.

I highly recommend this book—it's a brilliant introduction for children to an awe-inspiring subject.

Simply Office 2010
Simply Office 2010
by Kate Shoup
Edition: Paperback
Price: 8.91

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, basic guide, 17 Dec 2011
This review is from: Simply Office 2010 (Paperback)
A very clear and simple to understand manual, 'Simply Office 2010' is an introductory guide to the 2010 editions of Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Outlook covering the common features that most people are likely to use. It is by no means comprehensive nor, however, does it claim to be - it expresses the basics clearly and concisely using bullet points, text boxes and plentiful, annotated screen shots; the attractive, full-colour design adds to the book's clarity.

The reference is split into six main sections: 'Office Features' and then five individual sections for each Office application. The latter five sections are self explanatory; however, the 'Office Features' section explains the features and processes of Office that are common throughout the Office suite, such as creating new files, opening new files, printing files et cetera.

My only complaint about this book is the level of detail it goes into. As a complete beginner's guide, this book is perfect; however, I would have perferred slightly more detail - maybe a few more pages to each section.

Having said this, overall, this book is one of the clearest and most helpful software beginners' manuals I have ever found.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, clear introduction to web design, 15 Dec 2011
An excellent introduction to web design. Although now very old Internet-wise (it covers up to HTML 4.0), this book remains a clear, concise and helpful guide for HTML beginners. It is jargon free and it starts off with the very basics—no prior knowledge is needed. Also, it is very well laid out and it makes full use of screen shots to illustrate its information.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn HTML and how to create and design web pages.

Trenches Horrible Histories Handbooks
Trenches Horrible Histories Handbooks
by Terry Deary
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating, interesting and original, 6 Dec 2011
Like all other 'Horrible Histories' books, this handbook presents an interesting and truthful account of World War I, making full use of colour engage younger readers. Terry Deary includes fascinating facts that are not in most history books and presents them in original ways, e. g. through the brilliant cartoons of Martin Brown. Perhaps the only down side is the amount of text reproduced from the original 'Frightful First World War' book, although the addition of colour to the book and some new material accounts for this.

Highly recommended.

Ancient Greece (Collins Gem)
Ancient Greece (Collins Gem)
by David Pickering
Edition: Paperback
Price: 4.82

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, concise and useful, 27 Nov 2011
Having purchased this book due to my keen interest in the subject, I was blown away by the vast amounts of information packed into such a small volume. Pickering gives an overview of all topics to do with ancient Greece, including its location, history, religion, daily life, culture and war. The well-written text is presented in a neat, concise style that is very easy to read. This excellent book is rounded off by its good layout and full-colour illustrations and the addition of a glossary. At such a good price, this handy, portable book is a must have for anyone studying, or just interested in, ancient Greece.

Collins Easy Learning French Dictionary (Collins Easy Learning French) (Collins Easy Learning Dictionaries)
Collins Easy Learning French Dictionary (Collins Easy Learning French) (Collins Easy Learning Dictionaries)
by Collins
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, helpful dictionary, 27 Nov 2011
I bought this dictionary per a recommendation by my secondary school, and I must say that it has been tremendously useful for my GCSE studies.

The dictionary is very well laid out and it makes full use of colour to make it easy to use. There are just about the right number of words in the dictionary (although I have had to look up missing words in a bigger dictionary on occasions) and its physical size and weight are just right - it is not too big or too small, and not too heavy. However, the most outstanding feature of this dictionary is the examples of word usage it gives. Many dictionaries only include a few examples of words in action whereas this dictionary gives plenty useful examples for each word so that you can be sure you are using the right word/construction. There are several very useful extra sections in the dictionary: a "Dictionary Skills" section; a small grammar overview called "Parts of Speech"; the "French in Action" section, which lists of vocabulary organised in topics; and a "French Verbs" section containing around 20 verbs fully conjugated and tenses help.

My only disappointments are to do with the grammar sections - there is not that much information and it would be better if these sections were expanded - and the fact that there is no pronunciation help at all. Having said this, there is an excellent grammar companion in the 'Easy Learning' series, which you can buy in conjunction with this dictionary - Collins Easy Learning French Grammar (Collins Easy Learning Grammar).

Overall, this is the best French dictionary I have ever found and I thoroughly recommend it to beginners or anybody doing GCSE French.

Stabilo Exam Grade Set
Stabilo Exam Grade Set

Price: 3.98

4.0 out of 5 stars Overall, very good, 26 Nov 2011
A very good product that has been greatly useful for me. The product is a stationery set containing four HB pencils, an eraser and a standard-size pencil sharperner.

The pencils, although not quite as good as Staedtler pencils in my opinion, are of very high quality and they produce visible, dark markings of a sensible width. The eraser, which is PVC free, is brilliant and removes even the most penetrating pencil marks with ease. The one disappointment with this product is the sharperner; the actual sharperner blade in itself is very good but the case and lid that it is contained in is not. Very small pieces of graphite fall out from the gap between the sharpenings case and the lid, as is the case with lots of sharperners with cases these days. Also, the plastic join between the top of the lid (i.e. the flappy bit shielding the sharpener hole) and the bottom part is weak and my lid snapped in half after a few weeks of use.

Overall, however, this stationery set is very good and I would definitely recommend it.

A brilliant broad-nibbed pen that has a nice ink flow. As long as you are writing on the right paper, the pen works smoothly. I am very pleased with the speedy delivery and the reasonable price, and I would recommend the pen to anyone!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great quality and durability, 26 Nov 2011
I purchased these highlighters because of a recommendation. They took a long while to come (with free delivery) but it was worth the wait! They have liquid ink and are of very fine quality (much better than Stabilo Boss), and they last a long time. I would recommend them to anyone!

Encyclopedia Britannica 2005 Deluxe CD
Encyclopedia Britannica 2005 Deluxe CD

3.0 out of 5 stars Lacks detail, 26 Nov 2011
I have been using this as a research tool for my secondary school homework. Although many articles are very good, some lack in depth and some are very rarely factually inaccurate. The fact that a professional encyclopaedia, such as Britannica, has these errors is distressing. It has broken my trust in Britannica as completely reliable. As well as this, the software layout is very poor and the print-outs of articles have unevenly spaced text. Having said all above, for the most part, the encyclopaedia contains many very useful and reliable articles.

In summary, I don't think I would recommend someone to buy this product because:
1) The articles are quickly dating and some were out-dated even at time of release
2) Many articles lack in depth and the encyclopaedia does not add any more information than Wikipedia (and Wikipedia is slowly becoming more and more reliable)
3) The navigation and software is poor
4) The software does not work on Windows 7
5) It has a few factual mistakes

I would, however, recommend someone to buy a later version of the encyclopaedia where the software is improved and mistakes fixed. You could also subscribe to the on-line version which is updated and corrected every day.
