Peter Brook: Sur un Fil, The Tightrope
Peter Brook: Sur un Fil, The Tightrope
Price: 17.67

4.0 out of 5 stars Much interesting material, 20 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Just a few brief notes, partly because the info on this website is currently very limited. Many more details of this same DVD on the French Amazon website: http://www.amazon.fr/Sur-Un-Fil-The-Tightrope/dp/B00E8WL4E2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1390241007&sr=8-1&keywords=sur+un+fil

Despite the language used being English for the vast majority of the time, the DVD's cover is wholly in French. Also this is a `region free' (0) DVD so obviously intended for an international market.

The main feature of the DVD is sort of a fly-on-the-wall documentary features a sort of improvisation workshop led by Mr Brook, rather than rehearsals for any particular show. All takes place on the huge carpets laid on the floor in the centre of the Bouffes du Nord. A group of 8 or so actors, various ages and cultural backgrounds. Mostly centres on the exercise of walking on an imaginary tightrope, which is also used as a symbol...

All exercises are to the (usually improvised) accompaniment of resident musicians.

No commentary by the director, only sometime talks aside from the actors by Brook himself.

The special features include an interview with Simon Brook and a separate 30 min documentary of interviews with several of the actors and musicians, which is itself fascinating. Also includes several pieces of music along with still photos.

However, if you can't watch this with attention, it will be very dull, perhaps seeming impenetrable. This is not really for a general audience, but maybe more for those with an interest in the theatre.

when i 1st took it out of the box i noticed that where the fingerboard (fretboard) is glued onto the neck, there was a really narrow gap for a centimetre or 2... i thought not to worry.
but after 2 days of occasional use, the glue has completely come unstuck and the fingerboard has lifted away from the neck all the way along. luckily we got this direct from Amazon, delivered free, so i should be able to send it straight back for a replacement.
as no other reviewer has mentioned a similar issue here i'm assuming we were just unlucky this time.
hope the replacement lasts longer!!

2.0 out of 5 stars too short for large (adult man's) bike!, 10 Dec 2013
i wish i'd heeded some of the other reviewers who said the cover was too short for their bikes.
i have a reasonably large adult man's road bike, and there's just no way i can get this cover to fit over both wheels at the same time! the blurb boasts "fits wide handlebars" which may well be true, but less width and more length is definitely needed unless you have a smaller bike.

the packaging info comes complete with dimensions (listed at 186 cm long) - so why not put this info on the website to save us all the trouble?? However! The Bosmere website states 196cm long ([...] - so what on earth??

also no "boot brush" included, as the blurb states. also the package include 3 loose pieces of cord with attachments, but no instructions as to how you're supposed to fit them to the cover!

5.0 out of 5 stars superb!, 1 Dec 2013
only had this camera a few days so far - very glad i didn't heed the only other (2-star) review currently on this site!
really excellent camera for this price - great results so far. very easy to use.

i dunno why GE are no longer really selling cameras in the UK any more! that is the only down-side. i cannot seem to register my camera on the GE website, so no real support. so you take a risk if you buy from an individual, and will be trusting a proper retailer to give you some sort of warranty.

apart from that; go for it!

5.0 out of 5 stars bigger than i thought... excellent sound!, 24 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
i guess i should've looked more carefully at the dimensions info and/or the photo cos when these came they were bigger than i thought!

the sound quality is EXCELLENT for a very wide variety of musical styles. you couldn't ask for better or louder really.
for this price? very highly recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars tiny figures - misleading dimensions on info on this website, 15 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Your listed product info states dimensions:
23 x 8 x 18 cm.
Now that I've received this order, I can only assume these measurements refer to the box the figures come in! This is EXTREMELY misleading. The box cannot even be seen in this photo, so naturally the buyer must assume the dimensions are of the figures themselves. However, the figures are between approx 5 and 9 cm tall. MUCH smaller than I expected.
Don't think I'd have paid 10 if I'd known.

The Pirate Cruncher
The Pirate Cruncher

Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars great, 21 Sep 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Pirate Cruncher (Paperback)
I read this after Duddle's other pirate book, The Pirates Next door. That book rhymes throughout and so has a great strong consistent bouncy rhythm. This book only rhymes in part (for speech?) which confused me in how to read it aloud. Having said that it's a great story.

I had a little issue though with my copy... There's a big fold-out page in the book, and this was a little ripped in my copy. I'm not sure if this is because the flap comes out downwards, so perhaps if the book is not opened fully, the place where it folds might get a bit ripped. This will get worse over time. Anyone else experience this?

The Bird King
The Bird King
by Shaun Tan
Edition: Hardcover
Price: 14.99

5.0 out of 5 stars undiluted genius, 15 Sep 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Bird King (Hardcover)
I read a rather uncharitable review of Shaun's work saying that what he excels at is telling a story through his astonishing artwork... and that his text may not always be up to that high standard. There may be an element of truth in that I suppose...

And that's what is great about this book. His pictures here are untroubled by accompanying text (aside from often a one- or two-word caption), yet they speak volumes of Mr Tan's 'ordinary impossible' worlds, creatures and situations (conveyed through often the very briefest of marks!).

Another reviewer here said basically that this book was only really for Tan enthusiasts. I would disagree with that. Obviously this is not a linear story book and will not be to everyone's tastes, but that's not nothing to do with being a 'Tan fan' already, I think it just means having an open mind and perhaps being comfortable with a lack of explicit text.

Very highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Arrrrrr! - good story, very funny, 15 Sep 2013
This review is from: The Pirates Next Door (Paperback)
i agree with other reviewers here - great story, very funny - love the quirky pictures.

but something has me puzzled. is it just me or does the story seem to jump a little? we go from the town hall complaints on one page, to the girl asleep, then next page the lawn crosses, "Matilda woke next morning, puzzled by what Jim had said" - what had he said? seems to be something missing.

Extremely thought-provoking and beautiful book. This could equally be for adults as for older children.
A mysterious story, but at the same time touching and very human.
