5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding !!!!, 24 Nov 2013
Borgen, especially season 1,is nothing other than a television treat.
The public, especially the "demanding"part of it, get the whole package.
Plot,script,direction,acting,photography-everything is outstanding.
Those of you who like political series will more than adore this true lesson, all the way from Denmark, of how to make a perfect one.Apparently the fact that Scandinavian countries have managed to have not just thriving economies, but also the highest educational and sociopolitical levels on the Globe,is no coincidence.
Just watch it.You will be delighted. And envious of the standards it sets.

3.0 out of 5 stars ...and the last shall be first...., 24 Nov 2013
This review is from: The Wolverine [DVD] (DVD)
Wolverine is the last addition to the X-Men saga. The character was introduced many years after the inception of the comic book series.Yet while some vanished early (Angel)and others were kept alive a liitle longer(Cyclops)none ever came close to Wolverine's success. His appealto the public grew exponentially as time passed, until he pushed everybody else out of the screen. The selection of Hugh Jackman played no small part in this.
But why ?
Well,it is rather obvious.Wolverine, contrary to all other X-Men, is dark.He is violent,he is a loner, and he kills his enemies.(And he is a smoker, too!Try to think of a "good guy/hero"in the last two decades movies who smokes ! The habit has been reserved as the designation of the "bad"guys for many years now). These "elements" constitute the core characteristics of most,if not all, stereotype heroes of the screen in the 21st century.Clean-cut heroes ,noble idealists, who show great respect for life and never kill their foes are becoming passee.Even Batman became a "darker"hero. So Wolverine is not but "a man of these times".
As for this movie ,it is not bad.It is not very good, either. It will appeal immensely to W's fans, and moderately to all others.
But the charcter is portrayed impeccably by Hugh Jackman.

1.0 out of 5 stars Oh my God !!!, 22 Nov 2013
This review is from: Legion [DVD] [2010] (DVD)
I will not go into deep analysis, although as a true fan of sci-fi and supernatural movies I could be entitled to.
I will just say that I finished watching this appaling movie only out of morbid curiosity.I was really curious to see if there would be one single scene in this cheap, very cheap, production, that would justify the title, the theme(angels) or even the existence of a director.
There was none.
This is a pure unadultered pseudo-religious, pseudo-meaningful, pseudo-movie.The idea is O.K.,God is fed up with humanity and decides to end its existence.Fair enough. After that there is crap. The characters are paper thin because the so-called director does not give them any depth.A child is meant to save the world and nobody bothers to inform us poor viewers as to how this is going to happen.God sends Gabriel to kill the child which is protected by Michael who has gone rogue.Yet God rewards Michael for his desobedience and practically punishes Gabriel for his obedience to Him ! Nuff said !
Even the special effects are probably the poorest I have ever seen ! The angels fight is a cross between second class martial artists and medieval knights !
But enough with this garbage of a movie.Whatever you do,avoid it.It will either put you to sleep or bore you to death.

3.0 out of 5 stars One should quit while being ahead....., 20 Nov 2013
I watched the series in DVD ,season by season,in a period of three months. While it has its merits, the story, the script,is not one of them.Granted that credibility is not the strong point of any "spy series",there has to be,however,a limit to what kind of story you present to the public, especially the "thinking"part of it.
Just a few points.
Rambaldi,a 15th century "genious",has produced an almost endless series of artifacts, the production of which would require anything from molecular bio-chemistry to quantum physics knowledge ! His followers hid most of them in such places as Central Africa, the Mongolian desert ,mountains of Nepal and the depths of the Indian Ocean !All of the above in the 15th century ! During the medieval ages !All of the artifacts are traced and found in our days,by the CIA and various villains. All of them are found in pristine condition !

Each and every "leading role" is killed. At least once. But none, hero or villain, fails to ressurect himself.Metaphorically or,in the case of the arch villain, literally !!!

I could go on for hours. But I will only mention one exmple.Towards the end of the series(season 5)one of the heroes,CIA agent Vaughn,is shot in the chest 5 times .Naturally he survives! After a heroic battle CIA doctors rescue him,and the "company"sends him to Nepal for 6 months to recuperate in safety. His lover, and mother of a child he's never seen,as it was born shortly after he was shot, fellow agent Sydney Bristow, goes to see him. After some terrible ordeals they meet, they hug,he asks about the daughter he's never seen, and is assured by Sydney that "she has his eyes".He neither asks for a picure, nor is offered one !!! Any half wit mother would have at least 1000 pictures of the baby stored in her cellphone memory chip ! But not in this case ! Yet a few days later, when Vaughn has travelled from Nepal to Germany,he meets another fellow CIA agent (Dixon)who presents him with a printed (!) photo of his daughter-and everybody is very moved !!!!
Wait, this is not the best part.Vaugn suspects somehow that an important microchip(not small at all, about an inch long and half wide) has been implanted in his chest 30 years ago, when he was a boy.Sydney recovers it very easily using a penknife ,as it is close to the skin .
The man had been a CIA agent for 15 years ! He should have undergone any medical examination-including catscans-known to man dozens of times. And just six months ago he had undergone major surgery as he was shot 5 times ! In the chest ! Yet in all the myriad x-rays and catscans that he must have undergone then,as well as over the years, no CIA doctor had spotted a chip the size of a small matchbox planted close to his chest skin !!! I rest my case !!!

The series is fast, action packed ,thrilling and even funny. But please do not make the mistake of thinking while watching it-it might prove to be dangerous !!!

5.0 out of 5 stars An unexpected treat !!!, 17 Nov 2013
This review is from: Deep Blue Sea [1999] [DVD] (DVD)
I first viwed this film a couple of years after it was originally released.I did not even want to,but a friend insisted.
I have watched it twice more since then, and I can say with confidence that this is one of the best thrillers of its kind I have ever seen.
The core idea is clever, the script very well written, the direction excellent, the actors surprisingly good.Even the finale is not routine, since most of the "good guys" perish in the jaws of the super-shark.There is ,also,a very clear message.Mess with mother Nature at your own peril.
All in all,an excellent film.Bravo !!

5.0 out of 5 stars Resilience supreme !!!, 16 Nov 2013
What is more admirable than anything else in the series is its endurance. It does not falter ,it does not fade,it does not become boring.
Season after season,it endures.
An accomplishment ,it rejuvenates itself and keeps one pinned down on his armchair, with ever new thrills and spills.
Worth every penny.

Game of Thrones - Season 1-2 Complete [DVD] [2013]

5.0 out of 5 stars Impeccable....yet...., 10 Nov 2013
The series,at production level, can only be characterised as impeccable.
The sets, the story/plot,the direction, the characters, the acting, are all outstanding.Action, cliffhangers and a sound dose of nudity and soft porn make up a most enticing dish of entertainment.
Any reservations ? Obviously none where the entertainment values are concerned.
Yet I cannot stop thinking that the atavistic path mass entertainment has taken in the last two decades is intentional, and not a bearer of good news for the world.
Science has long stopped to be the provider of mass entertainment.Fantasy, now, rules unchallenged. The 70s and 80s TV and movie industries were ruled by science fiction, and produced a series of masterful films, along ,of course, with some trash. From the 90s onwards fantasy is the master.Alien worlds, spaceships, new inventions, new societies and new worlds stood for the future.Which,as aptly put in the Star Trek saga,is "the undiscoverd country".Few realise, for instance, that in the "trekkies" humanity money and wealth were ,practically, never mentioned. Each individual did his job as best as he/she could, inspired by noble ideals, such as justice and prosperity for all-including hostile aliens-not by the pursuit of wealth.Society had evolved into something higher, much higher than what we know now.
Apparently these were "undesirable"concepts.
So we gradually sank into a dark medieval past.An endless battle of kings and princes, warlocks and warlords, elves and trolls, dragons and monsters. An environment full of mysticism, supernatural, wars and massacres, all in the pursuit power and wealth.Science,as such, became extinct.Mega hits such as "The lord of the rings"this one and many othes, took care of that.
This,in my book,is the reverse of progress. It creates a "sick school of thought".And this is not good. For the people in general. Not good at all.
I did ,however, enjoy this great series.A lot.But with a bitter aftertaste in my mouth.

3.0 out of 5 stars Jolly good show,lads !, 8 Nov 2013
This series has proven beyond any doubt that perpetual repetition is more than acceptable to the public at large.
Notwithstanding the fact that the principal heroes are insignificant, both as characters and as actors, the viewing public has fallen in love with them-in perpetuity ! Possibly because everyday people can identify themselves in the characters. They are not very handsome or beutiful, they are not very intelligent, they are not good at sports, they are not rich, they are not very succesful, they are,in one word, ordinary.
Well,I suppose congratulations are in order. To those who created a mega-hit out of the most common materials.Jolly good show lads !

2.0 out of 5 stars Mindless thrills....., 15 Sep 2013
I understand that reviews on this kind of books are usually written by "aficionados",by dedicated fans of these authors and this kind of stories, which can be described by the phrase "....great hero saves world fighting under impossible odds".
So I am not likely to enthuse the fans, not just because I am not one of them.I do enjoy a frantic thriller ,but only under the proviso that the story, the plot,is ,at a minimum, vaguely credible.
This is the first Clive Cussler book I've ever read.So I can only speak about this particular book, not about the author,in general.
The story is extremely gripping, full of action, and the escalation well planned. The "hero"characters-Dirk Pitt mainly-are what they are expected to by.Almost superhuman in both mental and muscular prowess, fearless, witty, and ethically beyond even the slightest reproach. The bad guys are just that.Bad.Totally and unreservedly so.A 'family from hell',so to speak. The stakes, the highest possible.Civilisation and the human race itself, since only a couple of hundred thousand neo-nazis are set to survive the cataclysm. If Dirk Pitt fails, the world as we know it will cease to exist.
The set is ready for continuous thrills and action, especially if both yourself and your brains are on a holiday.Or if you are a seven year old who enjoys-and believes- "Marvel" cartoons.
For , not a single page goes by without a thrilling situation occuring, with one slight fault only. That it is both impossible and ludicrous. In every single case what is described is illogical, improbable ,and, most of all, ridiculous.I won't go into detail. Two facts only. The worlds greatest criminal organisation possesses the the mental abilities of a retard. They have created a colossal scheme to rule the world, they possess unlimited funds and resources, yet they act like cartoon characters both in terms of security and ability to prevent their plan from falling apart.Even the way they talk to each other is ridiculous, their dialogue being fit for small children.Second, the "heroes"who practically single-handedly save the day,are "Numa"executives ! Not NSA,CIA,DEA,DIA,FSB,MI-6,S.S,OAS,or any of the numerous intelligence organisations with ,literally ,hundreds of thousands of extremely-and very expensively-well trained operatives,as well as unlimited technical resources, but two guys from NUMA !!!An "oceanological"organisation !!
As far as I'm concerned, that is enough.I rest my case !!!
I do not say that the book is not enjoyable. If you do not think about the plot-at all-you may well enjoy it.But if you do,then better avoid the irittation.
