3.0 out of 5 stars Gibson's obsession does not always work !, 28 Jan. 2014
This review is from: The Patriot [DVD] [2001] (DVD)
A few years after his blockbuster triumph "Braveheart" Gibson apparently decided that ,since being a Scottish legend proved to be a very lucrative idea, why not become an all American legend as well ? After all Americans outnumber the Scots about 70/1 ( and they also are slightly more gullible....) so success must be an inevitability .
If only movies (....and real life...) worked that way.But they do not.
Patriot is not a bad movie. It is not a very good one, either. It simply is "viewable".It is a pseudo historical tale, meant to appeal to the average American. And it does-to a point only. But quality wise it idoes not even come close to Braveheart.
Oddly enough(,,,,perhaps not so much...) what enthused me most was the supporting cast.Tom Wilkinson is Lord Cornwallish reincarnated ! What a pleasure to watch this great actor hold the legendary British actors tradition so high ! Jason Isaacs gives an outstanding performance as Colonel William Tavington:And the untimely demised Heath Ledger is,as usual,an excellent Gabriel Martin:(,the "hero's" son).
Apart from that,as well as a couple of beautifully orchestrated battles, there is nothing else really meriting mention.
You may watch this movie. You will have a pleasant couple of hours.Nothing more than that.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's O.K..Yet I expected more ......, 27 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I viewed the series in great expectation .After all it is mr.Bean playing a police precinct chief ! What better guarantee for a hilarious series ? !!
Whilst Rowan Atkinson dominates the set the rest of the characters are lacking.Sadly lacking. The CID boss is a moronic buffoon. The "weird" clown-like policeman ,who looks gay,but is not,is a "character" that would not survive in any police force more than a week. The Pakistani policewoman is "promoted" by the script as much as possible-but not convincingly. The black policeman is just "part of the furniture".Perhaps the best performance/part is the one of the "frustrated" anglo-saxon policewoman girl friend. But even that is not impressive.
It is quite obvious that the plot meant to promote the idea a fully multi-racial police force,a.k.a. society. Not a bad idea at all.But the show could be better.Much better. In plot, script ,direction, and in casting.
Then again I may be unfair. If the show's target group is limited to the lower echelons of society the series may well be excellent.
But I found it O.K..Just....

2.0 out of 5 stars Barely bearable., 27 Jan. 2014

An interesting central idea. Then we get verbal slapstick and endless repetition.Any selective viewer will lose interest after the first couple of episodes.
I do regret the purchase.

1.0 out of 5 stars Pity !, 27 Jan. 2014
There is only one thing that saddens me in this movie.
The fact that Jeff Bridges,a very good actor, follows the path of most ( fortunately not all ) good American actors when they grow old.
They will play in any short of film,as long as the paycheck is good.
Even in films such as this.....indescribable piece of cinematography..

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a very clever approach.A racing book without racing., 26 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Silks (Paperback)
I am a devout Francis fan.I am also a great fan of "legal-judicial"plots.I also like good detective stories.
So why was I slightly dissapointed by a book that tries to combine all three ?
Two reasons.
First, the plot is lacking and the mixture is in imbalance.
Second, and more important, because there is very liitle about racing and the "hero"is not even involved in it.
Dick Frnacis' best books remain those where the hero is a jockey himself.Active or retired."Enquiry"and "Reflex" are perfect examples.

5.0 out of 5 stars I suppose it takes all kinds...!!!, 19 Jan. 2014
I have written before about the series so I won't do it again. It is simply excellent, whichever way you look at it.
I am,however, extremely amused by reviewers who rate this one(...or any other outstanding piece of cinematography...)with one-star only(meaning trash...)because the dvd is either expensive,or not functioning properly,or it has arrived late, and so on,and so forth !!
In my mind this is the equivalent of buying a Turner painting and trashing it because : it was expensive,or the frame is not nice,or the gallery delivered it late,,or the painting itself needed some "cleaning" !!!
But,I suppose,it takes all kinds ....!!!

The Secret
The Secret
by Rhonda Byrne
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £11.99

1.0 out of 5 stars Mind games !!!, 18 Jan. 2014
This review is from: The Secret (Hardcover)
I went through this book a few years ago.Carefully,at the beginning, quickly as the pages went by.
I had,all along,a feeling of "deja vu".I was halfway through it when I realised why.
It is a book well written. It absorbs and elates the average person. It is convincing, for most people. Many will accept it as the new gospel.A lot of people will re-shape their lives after it.It promotes the idea of "positive thinking"as the universal solution for all problems and ailments.
So what is wrong,if any,with it ?
For starters I must say that I have read it before. Many times. Not by the same author, not under the same title, not with the same text. But ,all the same, the same book.Because one book like this comes out of the presses at least once a month. In the particular.
Forget education, hard work, ingenuity, justice, creativity, struggle and persistence to a right cause.Just be positive towards everything and everyone, regardless.Do not react, cooperate.Do not get irritated,be content. And then the others will appreciate it and all that is good will come to you.
Do all of the above ring a bell ? Because most of you have read the "original version",written many years ago.
It is called "The New Testament".
Regardless of religious beliefs( I am not at all an agnostic ) all "religious manuals" have always being used to serve a binary purpose.Intenally to turn believers into a flock of sheep, who never revolt against their High Authority if it shares their own religion, and externally into a pack of wolves, under the suitable guidance of their "H.A.",against followers of any other dogma. And vice versa.
But the phenomenon is not exclusively "religion related".Far from it.Use by "religious leaders"of this type of psychology is just an example.Every single individual or group in power has need of,and therefore promotes as much as possible, this type of mentality among its subjects ,its followers.
That is exactly what every "positive thinking" doctrine ,such as this book ,has done ,even more so recently than in the distant past.It "pacifies"the reader.Be nice and you shall be rewarded. In this life,or in the next,it is irrelevant.Do NOT ask,and you shall be given.Do NOT react to injustices, and they shall be rectified.Do NOT protest, and everything shall be put right.Do NOT fight for your own beliefs, and you shall win.
Be a nice little lamb and all will be well.If not in this life,in the next one.And if not for you, most certainly for those at higher levels of power. That is all.Control through mind games. And the best part of it is that not all authors or preachers of such "doctrines" do it on purpose. Not all of them write "manuals".Quite a few really mean well, they believe in what they write and preach.Because one can very well be a nice little lamb and never realise it.And nice little lambs need company. They need a flock to be part of.So they instinctively call for one to be created.
What a joy for the "shepherds" !

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book, 13 Jan. 2014
Being Greek I was fortunate enough to be able to read, many years ago,"The republic" in the original text.
This book, which conveys all of Plato's concepts and ideas in an impeccable way to the English speaking reader, deserves every praise.

Long Walk To Freedom: The Autobiography of Nelson Mandela
Long Walk To Freedom: The Autobiography of Nelson Mandela
by Nelson Mandela
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.00

5.0 out of 5 stars Chronicles of a legend., 12 Jan. 2014
I consider myself very lucky because I happened to work in South Africa from 1985 to 1990.The experiences amassed during this time are invaluable.More so because I could appreciate this book from a perspective umknown to most Europeans.
Everybody knows about the 27 years Nelson Mandela spent in incarceration. Not many know that this period could have been shortened considerably if he had simply conceded to renounce violence as a means of political change.Very few know that he steadfastly refused to do so,although he was the primary preacher of peaceful change.Among the ANC leadership the militants prevailed-by far.Mandela was the only person who could control them, and did so very succesfully, thus ensuring the most astounding political change in a century without a drop of blood being shed.Having stated so during my stay in the country several times,I had to undergo the rather unpleasant experience of being "questioned" by the police as a "terrorist sympathiser".They were,of course, informed about my "dangerous attitude" by some of my local european(....and Asian...)"friends" and "business assosiates".People who, after the change of the regime and the abolition of the "apartheid"abomination, became -overnight- supporters of the "change" ! Retroactively !
It is difficult for anyone to fully appreciate this book if he has not lived in the country-with an open mind.It is,nevertheless,an invaluable read,as well as quite enlightening, from a socio-political point of view.More importantly, perhaps,it is a potential window into the future of mankind,of what is to come.Seperation of people into different "classes" ,as well as wealth distribution in the most partial way, are facilitated by skin colour, but they can also be "founded" on other ,not openly visible, characteristics. This can be achieved relatively easily, with the "invaluable" support of the "impartial"media, worldwide.
If one believes that this is exactly what is happening now globally, then he will realise how people can resist, and ultimately neutralise, such a proccess.Mandela's "lessons" are invaluable,in this respect. One should always keep in mind that history has provided many legendary leaders over the centuries, yet almost all of them built their "legends" on mountains of corpses and rivers of blood.I can only think of two that did so by preaching, and practicing, the exact opposite.Peace, equality, and respect for human rights and life itself.Mahatma Ghandi and Nelson Mandela. It an interesting coincidence (?)that they were both inexorably linked to South Africa !
This book is,in fact, nothing but a tribute to noble ideals, human rights and good causes.
You will honour them,as well as Mandela himself, just by reading it.
