Edge Of Darkness [DVD]
Edge Of Darkness [DVD]
Dvd ~ Mel Gibson
Price: £2.27

3.0 out of 5 stars Better than most !, 4 Jun. 2014
This review is from: Edge Of Darkness [DVD] (DVD)
This is a good film. There is nothing really new in it,but there is a combination of good old ingredients.Strong plot(the corrupt and totally unscrupulous system against one man),well played main characters ,action, and ,thankfully, not the usual, dumb,"all is well",happy ending.
Not memorable, but well worth watching.

Ninja Assassin [DVD] [2010]
Ninja Assassin [DVD] [2010]

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a bad one !, 10 May 2014
This review is from: Ninja Assassin [DVD] [2010] (DVD)
I happened to view this one, although I seldom watch films of this genre. Most of them are appalling ,anyway.
I find it difficult to categorise it.It is neither very good, nor very bad.It is neither brainless, nor brainy.
What is definetely superlative is the choreography of the fights, and there are lots of them ! And gory fighths at that !
Strangely enough, however, the things that you would expect to be very poor in a gory ninja super action movie, are not !
There is an interesting plot, and a "human interest"sub-plot,the acting is rather good, and the direction is more than adequate, even in no-action scenes. All in all a very professional production in every respect. Not a movie to remember for ever, but also not one you will regret having spent a couple of hours watching.

4.0 out of 5 stars Helen Mirren is more of a Queen than the Queen herself !!, 3 May 2014
This review is from: The Queen [DVD] [2006] (DVD)
A superb Helen Mirren,as well as an excellent supporting cast(James Cromwell IS Philip ! )are the primary attributes of this interesting "esoteric" movie.Plus the "picturing "of Tony Blair, who becomes an overnight royalist ,which implies that he was less the clown I believed him to be and more a "closeted"systemic instrument of value.Plus the amazing, yet incomprehensible to non anglo-saxons ,'hysteria'of the British lower social echelons for Princess Diana. All of those constitute an interesting vieweing.

4.0 out of 5 stars A low budget ,yet very interesting ,movie., 28 April 2014
Now here's a movie that few have ever heard of,and even fewer will pay any attention to.
This is a very cheap production,in the sense that they did not have much of a budget,so they kept costs very low.
The plot is pretty simple.A man wakes up with no memories at all.A very nice and pretty single mom finds him in the desert, half dead, and takes him in her isolated home and takes care of him.The unavoidable"fall in love"sequence follows soon enough.
Yet he has terrible flashbacks.Incoherent, but very upsetting. So he goes to L.A. with her to try and find out who he is.
So far,so good. You have seen something similar a hundred times.
I don't want to reveal the plot,in the off chance that somebody who reads this review will decide to watch the movie !
Yet it is quite interesting. With several "reversals".
It is a low key movie, with a very interesting plot, and a potentially very frightening message. The acting, not surprisingly,is very good.So is the direction. You do get that in low budget ,no special effects based, movies, quite frequently.
So if you are in the mood of watching a low budget movie with practically no "action scenes",but with a true context and a latent message,go for it !

2.0 out of 5 stars Just another dud...., 27 April 2014
This review is from: Runner, Runner [DVD] (DVD)
The movie is about an internet gambling magnate/crook,Ben Afleck, and a guy who makes mistakes ,but is not reaaly bad.Justin Timberlake.
I never found anything interesting in Ben Afleck,as an actor. He has "elevated" his inability to act into "style".His voice rarely fluctuates, his facial muscles rarely move. That about sums up his acting.Add to it another mediocre actor,Timberlake,an improbable and unnecessarily confusing script, and a director who does not know whether he is coming or going, and you have just about summed up this movie.Oh,yes.Include a couple of "exotic countries",a lot of money,a girl and a "happy ending " and you just have the epitomy of what contemporary U.S. movies stand for.
Very little.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good series, but nothing to be overly excited about., 24 April 2014
I only viewed the whole mini series a few days ago.It was okay, but I kept having a strange feeling throughout it.It was like viewing the "poor little cousin of The game of Thrones".Barring the fact that this one is "history based"(..more or less...),and the other one pure fantasy.the whole production, sets, direction AND acting seemed to shout : "We are not a heavyweight" ! ( Well, with the possible exception of Ian Mc Shane).Nice and mildly interesting, but that's about it.Watchable.And forgettable, after a while.

3.0 out of 5 stars Different,sensitive,peculiar,but......, 21 April 2014
This review is from: All Is Lost [DVD] [2013] (DVD)
I have immense respect for Robert Redford. Not just as an actor and a director, but as an individual of rare qualities for a star and a movie legend,as a "politicised"individual,as a non-publicity seeker, and as a most decent man. There are other great actors ,but just that.Take for instance Robert de Niro ,who will play in any cinematographic piece of crap if the paycheck is good, and does not give a rat's ass for anything not directly related to his own personal interests. the exact opposite. He always chooses what part, and in which film,he will play based on how inspiring the script is.So here he is ,at age 77,playing solo a quite demanding role, both mentally and physically. For I know not of many an american actor who can hold the screen on his own for two hours, without a single dialogue,or even monologue, involved.(Remember Tom Hanks in the so much overrated "Castaway",where they "scripted in" a ball, posing as his friend,so that he could talk to it ?).In fact this most rare american actor who can act without speaking a word(...let alone yelling every other minute..),and practically "underplay"during the whole movie. If he was a British actor it would be a natural, even easy, thing to do.But for an American,it is nothing less than a feat.
Robert Redford's performance is so esoteric,so deep,as the old man who struggles for survival ,but is unsure whether it is worth the effort, that could easily be dubbed "outstanding",barring one minor hitch.
The 1958's movie "The old man and the sea",based on an novel by Ernest Hemingway and starring Spencer Tracy,at the best role of his great career. The comparison does not come out in favour of "All is lost" .
So the idea is not novel. There is only one man on screen who just speaks a couple of words throughout the movie. Is it worth watching ? Well,it all depends. As a soul searching esoteric travel and a tribute to the great Robert Redford, most certainly yes.Or even if you are a sailing fan.If ,however ,you happen to be a "regular"movie fan, seeking primarily "entertainment",I would be most reluctant to recommend it.

The Fifth Estate [DVD]
Dvd ~ Benedict Cumberbatch

4.0 out of 5 stars An uneven, yet most interesting, film., 21 April 2014
This review is from: The Fifth Estate [DVD] (DVD)
One can always assess a movie from three different angles.Story-script,Direction,Acting.One can also assess the production, the"visuals",if it is an action or special effects movie, which is not the case here, although "Dreamworks"is involved.
The story, the core issue here,is extremely interesting,as we all know.It has to do with how one man took one of the main tools of enforcing state policy through surveillance and misinformation, the internet, and turned it over, using it as a means to expose the state's "darkest secrets" .The script, the plot, however,is not up to par.Confusing, uncertain as to its target, unclear as to the characters, all in all "lacking".The direction is on the same level.Hesitant, ambiguous, even clumsy on occasion ,and failing to go "in depth"as regards many characters, primarily the one played by the (excellent actor)Stanley Tucci.
I've left the part of acting last.Because here we have Benedict Cumberbatch, the "chameleon"man.Possibly the most gifted ,versatile and interesting "new"actor "on stage",after the death of Philip Seymour Hoffmann.
I have come to the conclusion that his full potential remains untapped.I am looking forward to see him act in under the direction of truly great directors.I believe that he will then produce many "more than memorable" performances.Even as it is now,he is a pleasure to watch. His portrayal of the complex, semi psychotic, obsessive, yet self-serving, Julian Assange, founder of the one man show operation of Wikileaks,is indeed "one for the books".

2.0 out of 5 stars A "Ray Haryhausen special effects movie".Nothing else., 19 April 2014
Had I not stumbled, accidentally, upon the reviews,I would most probably have erased this one from my cerebral memory banks.
Why is that ?Well,It is quite interesting to watch Harryhausen's stop-motion special effects.Ground-breaking,at the time. The only unfortunate thing is that,in order to enjoy the special effects, you had also to watch the movie itself !
I will merely comment on the "acting",or,to be more precise,on the "direction"of the actors.By a mr Desmond Davis.
To have the two leading parts (Perseus and Andromeda) handed over to two "actors" (Harry Hamlin and Judy Bowker)who cannot act to save their lives is ,by itself, a bad omen. But I would have thought it impossible for any director to have Lawrence Olivier portray the most insignificant (...and boring..) Zeus ever to appear on screen, and Burgess Meredith ,Claire Bloom, and,of all people,Maggie Smith,to wander aimlessly around being ,obviously, totally confused and uncertain what to make of their their parts. With the unavoidable pitiful results.Only Ursula Andress,as Aphrodite,is stunning, but then all she had to do to achieve that was to show up !
All in all a very-very bad movie ,worth watching only to enjoy Ray Harryhausen's special effects techniques.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stands alone on top of its field., 5 April 2014
Arguably the best "legal" series ever filmed.
Production, plot, direction, script, acting, everything is of the highest level.
No need to proceed in detailed analysis. The series stands alone in a very difficult field.
Just one warning.
If,in the past, you have followed, let alone enjoyed ,garbage like "Matlock" or "Boston Legal",,thinking that these are "legal series" ,this one may not be the best for your palate.
