This is one of the books which was recomended on the On-Line Gamers Anonymous at [...]

This book will be very helpful for people with minimal understanding of computer gaming and it's effects Yet it will also interest people who have a good understanding of the internet/gaming. There is a historical perspective which comes through about how gaming develops along the years which i found informative.

It is the authors personall experience of his addiction which started in early childhood and deepened through his life and the factors which may have predisposed him to become an addict. Very easy to read and does not take to long to get to the point.

My one critism is that the chapter which is strongly Christian comes across a bit too strong, especially for UK readers. This ia an American book. I would have suggested that the body of this chapter be placed in an appendix of resources at the end. I am not against the fact that the author is a Christian. It's relevant to him and his recovery and may help some people, but it stops the flow of the book, in my opinion and could put people off which is a shame. If that is the case, I suggest you skip this chapter.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good value and does the job, 8 Jan 2014

Bought this as a gift and the recipient is very happy with it.

I researched clock radio feedbacks for different cheaper models quite thoroughly and it seems the major gripe of some others is that the music comes on and increases until it gets too loud or if you want to listen to the raido for a while after it has switched on, you need to reset it.

This model does not have that problem. The recipient found it easy to set up and use.

For the price it is a real find. It has DAB and FM too.

How to Help Your Loved One Overcome Depression: A Fast and Simple System to Relieve Distress
How to Help Your Loved One Overcome Depression: A Fast and Simple System to Relieve Distress

Supporting somebody close who is depressed can be hard work and can bring up strong emotions within the supporting person. The natural reaction is to question, criticise, problem solve, and control the sufferer in an effort for them to change and get on "the right track".

But this will not actually help the sufferer or make them change so why carry on doing the same stuff which makes both of you feel bad?

This book helps you understand why a depressed person acts the way they do, without becoming bogged down in theory. It will help re-release your compassion towards your loved one and form a strategy that can minimise bad feelings resulting from misunderstandings, and also learn to accept bad feelings which cannot be avoided but chose not to react to them.

I liked this book because it gets the points across simply and quickly. I like the dialogue style of a therapy session where supporters examine with a therapist what they have been trying to achieve and why that strategy fails, and what they could do instead.

This is more than common sense because what the book asks you to do is counter-intuitive to many people. I am going to try what is suggested.

4.0 out of 5 stars It covers the mattress completely, 19 Oct 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I wanted a cover that would completely encase some mattresses and protect them from dust mites and bugs. I had considered another mattress cover that was waterproofed and supposedly breathable also, but I thought it still likely to be hotter and more noisy then was tolerable to some people, so I tried this design.

The fabric for this made by some kind of felting process...its not woven. It reminds me of interfacing you would use in dressmaking the reinforce a garment...but it is not quite the same as that. The stitching around the edge of the product to join the two sides together is not as close together as I would have thought was necessary, i.e. I would have expected the stitch to be shorter in length. However the edges are then overlocked, so there is another row of stitching to keep the critters in/out. I don't know if the stitching is tight enough to stop the passage of dust mites, but the product design would very much reduce free passage of their output, so to speak.

I was not sure from the product info available where the zip would be. Its right at the end so you wont have to sleep on it. The mattress can be turned and both sides of the mattress will be smooth.

I washed the covers, which are a little stiff, before using as the guidance says it will make then softer each time they are washed. They survived the wash and seem to be in good shape.

The product looks like a duvet cover in design. Its not a particularly easy job to get the covers on when dealing with a heavy mattress, you just need to take your time so that the stitching is not stressed too much. At least it will discourage others to take it off if you have guests who want to strip the bed after staying over. It fitted my mattress well; not too tight there is enough give to be able to get the thing on and off. The cover does not hug the mattress so it does not look sleek.

I use a quilted matress protector over the top because the fabric is not thick. I usually use a quilted protector anyway.

There is no noise or change in heat retaining/reflecting properties of the mattress so that is just as I wished.
I cannot comment on the dust mite and bugs aspect ... I would hope that it would be effective if you have allergies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspriational and practical, 19 July 2010
I bought this quite a few years ago and have read it right through twice and also dipped into it. It will be helpful for anyone who has aquired a piece of land and wants to do something with it. From half an acre, through to a smallholding, and up to a 100 acre farm or so.

This book will give you more ideas and understanding of the main issues than you will get by talking to an average farmer in the UK.

The author is very knowledgable and also comes across as someone who cares and has personal experience of small farms and their diverse nature

This book will help to inspire you but will also talk sense. It makes the point that anything you do, even if its a hobby, must be profitable or else you wont be doing it for long. It will also explain that farming is a huge commitment for the whole family.

There is so much information imparted in a concise and interesting style. Some of it concerning farming principles and practices, and some just very good common sense which can be easily lost by being too over enthusiatic at the beginning of any new farm project.

There are lots of suggestions of different types of farm products with supporting economic data such as net profit for different crops (in $) , and farm case studies.

It also teaches the reader to beware of faddy livestock. A warning to anyone still considering Alapcas, I think.(Don't do it!)

Its a USA book, so bear that in mind, but its still applies to the UK

Ordered it from amazon USA afew years ago

Love it

Mary Jane gives us some very interesting biographies, including her own life experiences.

Get a real feel for American rural women's culture; with tales of the good ol' days.

There is plenty of content in this book, creative ideas and stunning photography.

A feel good read.

The book does tend to plug her cooking products (not available in UK) But I can forgive her for that.

I love the wall tents with their own wood burning stove inside.

Growing Your Herb Business

5.0 out of 5 stars Feel the love, 19 July 2010
This book is brilliant for anyone who loves herbs and wants to earn some money from them.

I love the friendly way Bertha writes about her experiences.

Inspiring. Touching.

Case studies are great, even though they are mostly about businesses in the USA.

Sad to find out that Bertha is no longer with us, but part of her lives in this book.

This review is from: HOUSE SHARE HERO (Paperback)
This is a genuine review; I have no connection with the author.

If you want a step by step guide on how to do be a good HMO landlord, this is not it.

The author sounds like a nice guy and there are some anecdotes in there that give you a flavour of what can go on in rentals and a few good ideas. However, I find it rather a glamorised version of being a landlord with everything in garden rather a little too rosy. It's more about his style of operation, than an organised account of the nitty gritty of doing it well.

Some of the financial aspects described are common to non-HMO letting ; my view is that the author should have concentrated much more on the HMO aspects as there are no book publications to my knowledge that cover this area at all well.

It does not give a realistic view about HMO standards in housing which Local Authorities expect, and letting law aspects that people need to be aware of. For example, the scenario he describes near the beginning of the book regarding the tenant swiping the deposit back could have ended up with him being prosecuted for illegal eviction, at least the way he described it. So use the book with caution. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wealth of detail; and food for thought, 19 July 2006
I'm writing this review primarily because the previous review does not reflect the true value of this book. I agree this book is not a casual read. It is a very detailed document of how two intellectuals born into privilidged circumstances, eventually rejected the exploitation they saw in society, prefering a frugal life in the country where they could live according to their principles.

I believe they wrote this book because they had found something of value they wanted to share with anyone who was interested, and not to make a fast buck.

The depth of information on what they ate, how they grew their food, preserved their crops , their 'leisure' time etc - although it is written to their own situation, gives insights into self sufficient living that I have not gleaned from other books before. This book is genuine. They do not pretend to be experts in the field of smallholding. They were almost complete novices, out on their own, learning from their mistakes.

If you stick out reading the book, you will also gain a real sense of how time management takes on a new meaning. We tend to plan goals taking only a few weeks to achieve, perhaps a year before the job is done. Helen and Scott Nearing took on projects that took decades to complete e.g. Scott digging the lake by hand. If you don't have the will to finish the book, then self sufficient living is definately not for you.

For 'lighter' reading and real insight into their relationship, read 'Loving and leaving the good life'. Very touching.
