4.0 out of 5 stars ***** Hardware, *** Software, 1 Jan. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Firstly, this sounds fantastic and I guess that is what really matters. It seems that Marantz have wrapped all of the network-shenanigans around an excellent amplifier rather than this being just another clever black box with somewhere to plug speakers into.

My only niggle is with the software. The Marantz (Android) app is shockingly bad. The menus on the device are often a bit slow, especially at start up (with wired, fast broadband) and the unit seemed to behave a bit inconsistently on initial set-up although this has now resolved itself (possibly after firmware update).

Internet radio works well and no problems with Spotify Connect (which is what I'll be using 70% of the time).

So only minor niggles. As I said at the outset, it sounds fantastic and gives largely reliable access to music in ways we could only have dreamt of ten years ago.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Moon, 10 Sept. 2014

It's only ink BUT it is beautiful ink. The colour is much richer than the writing sample image suggests, a true blue-black. For the first second or two on the page it looks like it is too wet but then some kind of drying magic happens and it behaves extremely well on all types of paper.

At the price that UK shops charge then this would be an extravagant luxury, at this Amazon-seller price it is almost a guilt-free luxury. Almost.

2.0 out of 5 stars 75% Agree, 16 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
"Daring, ambitious, epic, moving' says Colm Toibin on the front of this novel. For reasons other reviews have made clear it is certainly daring, ambitious and epic; the problem is it isn't very moving.

Some of the writing is so overblown it is enough to make you wince ("...she will no longer be just another shadowed form in this city built on whispers."), the characters are stereotypes (the child piano prodigy, the downtrodden factory worker, the maverick surgeon fighting against the system) and consequently the dialogue often sounds like it was originally meant for a CIA propaganda film.

This book tries too hard and ends up shouting so loudly that you start to doubt that it has anything to say at all. A 'Daring, ambitious, epic' idea has been turned into a largely unmoving book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cheap but not nasty., 13 Feb. 2014

Decent build quality and holds my Nexus 4 securely. It's even been tested over the many pot-holes we have this winter and everything stays where it should. So at this price, an excellent product.

4.0 out of 5 stars Power-hungry but good at lower temperatures., 26 Nov. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Although the stated extraction-rate is lower than my previous compressor-type dehumidifier, it actually extracts more water. Presumably this is due to better operation at lower temperatures for this alternative technology. This does mean that it is power-hungry, as others have noted, but a lot of this extra energy must be due to the warm air that it blows out, so the extra cost does at least provide a useful side-effect.

Noise-wise it is quite loud BUT this is the white-noise of a fan rather than the drone of a compressor, personally I find this quality of noise less intrusive.

In summary, a bit expensive to run but otherwise seems to do the job well, especially if you want to operate it in a room/conservatory that isn't fully heated.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sorry, but..., 18 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I am usually a great fan of TNH's books as the man is one of the most wonderful Buddhist teachers alive today; but there is a but. Actually there are two buts.

1. Much of the content here is re-hashed and given a bit of spin to make it applicable to the topic of fear. The earlier TNH books do a much better, and more detailed, job of communicating the material.

2. Perhaps I am just too uptight, but I'm not very comfortable with the suggestion to place two cushions on the floor and swap between them whilst having a discussion between my inner child on one cushion (complete with childlike voice) and my adult self on the other. This seems closer to new age mumbo-jumbo than traditional Buddhist wisdom.

So feel free to hit the 'This review wasn't helpful button' (negative reviews seem to get a disproportionate number of those, especially when they contradict the majority view) but I've given my honest opinion. If you are new to TNH then 'The Miracle of Mindfulness' (and many others) gets 6 stars at least.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just a pretty colour., 7 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As with every Opinel knife that I have ever owned, this represents tremendous value for a quality knife.

The orange colour is actually a practical choice as it stands out very well against grass and the lanyard further reduces the chances of it being mislaid in the middle of nowhere (Possibly a bad business decision by Opinel as I may now take slightly longer to lose this one).

The blade arrives sharp, doesn't corrode (much, after a good deal of improper care) and sharpens to a very good edge when required.

In summary, it just does its job very well.

5.0 out of 5 stars More zen, fewer motorbikes., 7 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book is that rare combination of being intelligent and complex, yet still accessible.

It is perhaps strange that the weaker of the two narrators is the one that closely resembles the actual book's author (the small-town 'quirky' characters tip over into caricature and the husband and wife dialog feels a bit clunky, especially when they start discussing quantum mechanics!) but it may though just be relative to the wonderful writing of the other narrator, the Japanese schoolgirl 'Nao'.

It's non-linear, it's multi-layered, it leaves you with questions and it's highly original. If those sound like compliments to you then I can't recommend this book highly enough. It is a 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance' for the 21st Century but with more zen and fewer motorbikes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very bright, very useful., 30 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I purchased this for my wood-shed (where very large spiders live, the kind you don't want to be meeting in the dark) and it is perfect for the job.

The PIR sensor is ideal as it immediately activates as I walk through the door but gives no "false alarms" that would waste the battery. Similarly it only turns on when it is dark enough to be required but helpfully before it is pitch black. The light itself if incredibly bright and fully illuminates the 10' x 10' space, if you haven't seen the improvements to LED lights in the past couple of years then you will be amazed.

I'm enough of a geek to have tested the output from the panel and this confirmed it should easily be sufficient to keep the unit charged for the time it takes me to fill a log basket, even in winter.

Note also that one review below complains about being unable to disconnect the panel and light for fitting (to feed the cable between the two locations), this is no longer the case as there is a simple push-fit jack plug where the cable meets the light unit.

Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars 1 Year Later : Not that long a life., 5 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Finally took the plunge and replaced a previously purchased LED bulb with one of these. Really glad that I did as I would have been stuck with the inferior bulb for a long time.

This is much brighter and the colour of the light is also much more pleasing. Although it is brighter it is also, for reasons I wouldn't pretend to understand, possible to look in the vague direction of the bulb itself without being blinded (this bulb has a frosted lens(?) rather than a visible array of square LEDs as seen on other models).

I suspect that the improved brightness is more to do with the narrower beam angle than the output so it may not suit all. However, if like me you feel exhausted when you start to even think about which bulb to buy then just buy this one, very unlikely you will be disappointed.

Update January 14 : It died. Well short of the stated lifetime. Trying Phillips instead.
