John Ogden brought this 'concerto' to life again. It is a wonderful work and the breath-taking aspects of it are well brought out. At any time only a few pianists are up to playing this and few opportunities exist for its performance. The piano role is not only horrendously difficult but also modest in its relationship to the orchestra for much of the time. I liked the balance struck here.

I.have no reason to doubt the qualities of this foil, but one isn't its application. Braun are so inefficient with their labelling that I now have two for a razor I do not possess! And no means to recoup the money.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Mystery Unsolved, 19 July 2014

The subject of this book was a genius. He was as perceptive a critic, musician, composer, conductor as anyone of his age in England - 1925-1951. This book details all his works. It has enabled this reader to learn of compositions that he hadn't heard before, notably Lambert's "Rio Grande" and "Summer's Last Will and Testament", and, further, of the works of the Italian composer Busoni, in particular his massive piano concerto. In this way the book has been a catalyst for some highly significant music to come my way for the first time. However, as a biography the book lacks perception of its subject, and to an extent thereby baffles the reader. Lambert was a loner and a complex man. Having read and enjoyed the book, I am content to develop my interest in the music, and the volume will be put to one side.

Breakfast at Sotheby's: An A-Z of the Art World
by Philip Hook
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Nearly, nearly, nearly, 8 Jun 2014

Very interesting book showing many things that go on in the art world and what's what mostly in firms the author hasn't very close connections with today. Too much to ask that he exposes much more, though there seems plenty to expose.
In addition a lot of good sense. Art is highly fashionable. Some great art remains great despite the ups and downs; other is just rubbish. I felt I knew a little more after reading this book; had enjoyed the experience; but would have enjoyed more all the bits that had been left out for one reason or another!

Original letters of note reproduced.. A joy. The letter from Mary Queen of Scots on the eve of her execution alone shocks to the core: balanced thinking, sure hand. Alters our perception of history. Many others similarly. The editor has achieved something new here

I know it has been very popular, and is going down well with the person who has received it. But it palls before my eyes. Back to Lord Chesterfield.....

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Music book ever!, 5 Jun 2014

This review is from: Music Ho! (Paperback)
I came across this book as a result of a dreadful review in the Spectator by Philip Hensher of a new biography of Constant Lambert. It was unchanged, except for a note in the latest preface, for thirteen years. No book would last that long without change and "be wrong" - Hensher. Anyway it is the most well-presented picture of music of the early twentieth century and before, and there is enough material here for a complete academic course on its subject. The only trouble is that academic courses are not the vehicles for extracting all the themes tackled. And it leads me to want to hear more Constant Lambert music. It so far hasn't lead me into reading any more biographical material: I don't believe the appropriate biographer has appeared, and one may never do. But Lambert was a genius. Genius's aren't necessarily composers, sculptors, etc; they arise from all kinds of places. And another thing: "He died young". There is nothing to suggest, except with war, that free spirits shouldn't pick their life-styles, consciously or otherwise. Lambert died at 45 but as far as I can judge, fulfilled himself.

An Encyclopaedia of Myself
An Encyclopaedia of Myself
by Jonathan Meades
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £15.19

4.0 out of 5 stars Biography of Father and Salisbury, 5 Jun 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This was a lovely read, apt for me as I know many of the places and live near Salisbury. I am a great admirer of Jonathan Meades, who is prepared to say what he thinks, unlike too many of us. Having completed it I decided that it told me more about his rather engaging father than it did about himself; and the gossip around Salisbury was most interesting.

I buy sandisk as leica recommend them, making clear that there are other satisfactory discs, too. So far I have had complete success with them, but my purchases are not sufficiently great to form a judgment. However a dud disk can ruin a holiday, so the best strategy is to take two, and back up.
