The Gossamer Thread- a gripping read, 9 Nov. 2010
If you have ever wondered what it's like to spend your days working as a psychotherapist, The Gossamer Thread will be a gripping read. It's a fascinating and engaging reminiscence of 37 years in the life of a clinical psychologist and psychotherapist. John Marzillier's honest account is a refreshing insight into the struggles, frustrations and doubts he encountered along the way.
His story is told at an entertaining pace, drawing the reader into his quest, from his first enthusiastic ventures into behaviour therapy, through cognitive behavioural psychotherapy (CBT) and finally to his training and subsequent practice in analytic psychotherapy. His convictions as well as his many uncertainties are approached with an attitude of enquiry that is thought provoking and courageously self-revealing.
This memoir raises but does not answer, some important questions about the process of therapy; what is it that "works", is it the brand of therapy? or is it more about the therapeutic relationship ? Can it ever be a science, or is it an art? I look forward to the next book, maybe we'll get to know!
