5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating read, 23 Jun 2013

The journalistic style of this book suits the subject matter. While recounting his unparalled career, Ms Retief succeeds in portraying the humanity of Piet Byleveld. I have a question to him: why will he not recognise the great work done by profilers such as Micki Pistorius?

This review is from: Catch ME a Killer (Paperback)
I have read a few books by profilers because I could just not accept that such evil really exists. Ms Pistorius does not feast on every gory detail of every murder, but succeeds in conveying the broken and twisted humanity in the abyss, without condoning the evil deeds. Her explanation of the psychological background and motives is clear and insightful. The most terrifying conclusion I gained from this book is that South Africa is the perfect breeding ground for psychopaths.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reputation recipes, 20 Aug 2011

The book is so lovely to look at, that I could not wait to try out a few recipes, all of which have turned out well. I also like the fact that most ingredients are easy to find internationally. Over here in Austria, English cooking has (unjustly and ignorantly so) a bad reputation, and even for an amateur baker like myself, the easy recipes are convincing my neighbours and friends that there is a (largely unknown to them) world of scrumptious English food. The only change I would have liked is the correct naming of the "custard and cinnamon tart" on page 73. It is in fact a South African delicacy known as "melktert" = "milk tart". It would have been nice to know the origins of all the recipes as far as possible to discern.
