5.0 out of 5 stars Definitive Haley, 19 Mar. 2014

This review is from: Keep on Rockin' (Audio CD)
At last I've found an Haley set with all the essential tracks together with no annoying omissions. The band really rocks and must be comparable with any other R&B or R&R outfit instrumentally for this era. Crystal clear original recordings is a real bonus with a collection that digs up superb obscurities like Sundown Boogie, Lean Jean and the very early Rocket 88. It would be churlish to criticise anything about this buy, but it would have been nice to have a discography of dates or any sort of inner sleeve notes. There are some R&B nuggets where a guest vocalist takes over from Haley, and it would be great to find out the name. The familiar R&R Classics are all here- too many to mention. Rock & Roll completists must have this in their collection even if they prefer the more authentic vocals of Presley or Little Richard.

5.0 out of 5 stars FREDA PAYNE DESERVES MORE CRITICAL ACCLAIM, 22 Dec. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Freda Payne was never a `one-trick pony' - there was far more to her than the dance classic "Band of Gold" and the breathy Diana Ross-style "Deeper and Deeper"- as good as these most certainly were. In this marvellous digitally remastered compilation featuring virtually her entire Invictus career she ia a torch singer on "Now is the time to say goodbye", a jazz slanted vocalist on "The road we didn't take" and the mistress of Northern Soul belters- all done with great aplomb. Her career must be re-evaluated in the future because she just does not get the critical acclaim she deserves. There is hardly a `filler' on this collection- but many hidden gems that are just waiting to be discovered. She is certainly one of the last great female soul singers and no representative soul collection of this idiom would be complete without this one. The concept tracks on side one are probably unique in soul music.

5.0 out of 5 stars BRADFORD'S BILLY LIAR, 5 Dec. 2012

This review is from: Billy Liar [DVD] (DVD)
I could never work out whether I loved this film because of my nostalgia for old Bradford, or because it was a classic kitchen-sink comedy. After seeing it on sparkling DVD all these years later it is because of lashes of both. Bradford in those days had real character, and it was great seeing the legendary Locarno Mecca in all its glory on a Saturday night. As for the film- it sums up the post-war older generation superbly- slightly bigoted, and contemptous of modern ideas with Wilfred Pickles epitomising it superbly. A young Julie Christie represented the coming swinging sixties, with it's half-baked pretentions but glorious optimism. This is a superb social commentary of the early sixties with its brave new world. Those who lived through it will recognise some character in this film. As good as Tom Courtenay was it was the supporting actors/actresses that grabbed me.

5.0 out of 5 stars RIP IT UP- CLASSIC, 21 Nov. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
AT LAST A LITTLE RICHARD RECORDING THAT IS SO GOOD THAT NONE OF THE TRACKS GRATE LIKE THEY DID AT TIMES IN INFERIOR AUDIO. RIP IT UP, TUTTI FRUTTI, LONG TALL SALLY, READY TEDDY AND GOOD GOLLY MISS MOLLY ARE MATCHLESS ROCK 'N ROLL TRACKS THAT WILL NEVER BE REPEATED OR BETTERED IN ANY FUTURE GENRE. RICHARDS'S R&B OFFERINGS LIKE "SEND ME SOME LOVIN" AND "TRUE FINE MAMA" REFLECT A MULTI-TALENTED ARTIST WHO COULD HAVE GONE DOWN THE JACKIE WILSON, SAM COOKE ROUTE IF HE WISHED. IN FACT WHICH OTHER ARTIST COULD HAVE TAKEN THE CORNY BABY FACE INTO THE REALMS OF R&B? THE FIRST 21 TRACKS FLOW THROUGH A LEGENDARY CAREER IN SENSIBLE CHRONILOGICAL ORDER- THE END TRACKS 22-25 ARE INTERESTING CURIOS WHICH ARE OF MAINLY HISTORICAL INTEREST- PARTICULARY HIS FIRST DEMO SONG BABY (TRACK 25). THIS CD IS A MUST FOR ANY SERIOUS ROCK N' ROLL COLLECTOR OF THE MAIN-MEN. IF YOU'VE GOT PRESLEY, COCHRAN, VINCENT, BERRY, LEE LEWIS, DOMINO, DIDDLEY AND PERKINS YOU'VE GOT TO COMPLETE THE STORY WITH THIS!

5.0 out of 5 stars SUPERB ROAD RUNNER, 17 Nov. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Road Runner got me into Junior Walker & the All Stars back in the sixties. When I discovered more tracks I was content to listen to them on scratchy vinyl, cassettes and early audio CD's through the intervening decades. This collection took me to a different planet in recording values- a superb digitally remastered sound. To me Road Runner is different class followed by Shotgun, Shake and Fingerpop and all their early hard-driving R&B tracks. Towards the end of their career they did get more commercial and a lttle smooth for my palate but the wonderful sax saved these records. In fact the sax here must be the most under-rated in any genre or sphere of music- its just epic. I suppose the Northen Soul fans will be disappointed that Cool Cool Baby & I Aint Going Nowhere are excluded- but trust me all the vital, indispensable tracks are here.
