2.0 out of 5 stars Partly outdated and lacking relevance, 25 Jun. 2013
Given the extensive expertise of the editors and of most of the contributors, (and the price of this book), I expected more.

How is it possible that with the first edition published in 2009, the contribution on "Intelligence and UN peacekeeping" dates from 1994? The editors should be aware that in the fifteen years between 1994 and 2009, a lot has happened in relation to how the intelligence support function is implemented in UN peacekeeping operations (or at UN HQ level). Why is no mention made of the UN's Joint Mission Analysis Center (JMAC) concept and its implementation? Why is no mention made of the EU's approach towards Intelligence? How about concepts like "Understanding" and "Knowledge Management"?

4.0 out of 5 stars A good addition to other books on the same issue, 24 Nov. 2012
This books provides an interesting journalistic account of the author's experiences during the 2006 war in Lebanon (and afterwards), focussed on Hizbullah. It is certainly not the most authoritative or the ultimate study on the organisation (I do not think the author had that ambition anyway), but it will certainly assist the interested reader in better understanding Hizbullah's role during the 2006 war and its appeal among (large?) parts of the population in Southern Lebanon. For more in-depth studies of the organisation, consider reading Augustus Norton, Nicholas Blanford, Hala Jaber or others.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings, 18 Sept. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book left me with mixed feelings; obviously, the author thoroughly researched her topic and the book is pleasant to read, but, at the same time, you wonder to what extent the contents has been influenced by her friendship with "Bernie". The latter applies in particular to the last chapters of the book, where one starts wondering to what extent "greed" takes over from an honest intention to promote F1 racing as a sport...

2.0 out of 5 stars Strange selection of models, 8 Mar. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The pictures in this book are OK and the book is not expensive, but the choice of the models that are included can only be defined as "peculiar". Why is the R80G/S not to be found in the book? The K100RS, for example, one of the BMW design icons of the 80-ies (talking about art), is also missing! The same goes for the K1200RS, and the current K1200GT! Looking at the title, I expected something else...

2.0 out of 5 stars Very informative, poor picture quality, 11 Feb. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: De Tomaso Automobiles (Hardcover)
I agree with other reviewers that this book is well-researched, very informative and entertaining to read. The printing quality of the pictures and graphics is, however, simply appalling. Even if the book dates from 1999, it looks like a simple reprint of a much older version, with seventies' newspaper-"quality" pictures. What a shame for such a book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good analysis; recommended, 4 Feb. 2009
The book starts with a detailed analysis of the (possible) courses of action for the "West" in its future relations with Asia. I found this analysis most impressive; a true eye-opener. The author does an excellent job in explaining the background to the often opposite views of the "West" and Asia on the international level, highlighting the often too important role of short-term political opportunism in "Western" decision-making. The author is a strong supporter of China. Based on the fact that the book is mainly intended for a "Western" audience, the author could have spent more attention on some of the criticism that can be heard in the "West" against China. In the second half of the book, there are a few instances where it seems that the author falls in the same trap of stereotyping, he criticises the "West" for. One example: an unfortunate diplomatic incident is used to support the conclusion that "all Europeans view Asian culture with disdain...". I find this somewhat surprising for such an author and such a book. Still, I would certainly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in "globalisation" and wants to go beyond Thomas Friedman.

Balkan Battlegrounds Volume II: A Military History of the Yugoslav Conflict, 1990-1995
Balkan Battlegrounds Volume II: A Military History of the Yugoslav Conflict, 1990-1995

4.0 out of 5 stars A very detailed study of the 1991-1995 Balkans Conflict, 27 Oct. 2008
This is a very impressive study! Using only (local and international) open sources, the authors have succeeded in what is without doubt the most detailed study of the 1991-1995 conflict in the Former Yugoslavia, accessible to the public. Even though one may disagree with some of the conclusions drawn by the authors, or the fact that some aspects appear to be missing or are less accurately described (this is most likely linked to the source material that was used), Balkans Battleground (Volume I and II) is in my view a "must read" for anyone who wants to study the military aspects of the conflict.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thorough and objective review, 22 May 2008
Balkans Battlegrounds is too my knowledge the most detailed, factual and neutral review of the 1991-1995 conflict in the Former Yugoslavia. I would recommend it to anyone who wishes to understand the conflict and its background.
