4.0 out of 5 stars A serviceable substitute for the original, 28 Mar. 2015

Does everything that the original did, but the buttons are a bit stiffer, so 4 stars instead of 5.

Postcards are nice enough, but overpriced - certainly not worth £9!

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully horrible illustrations - I got this for my daughter ..., 6 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Beautifully horrible illustrations - I got this for my daughter who'd just started work in a pathology lab, but had a look at it myself first. The only thing I didn't like was the use of very thick, very black lines as part of the design (luckily not on all pages) which overwhelmed the delicate and tenderly drawn illustrations.

Blood Relative
Blood Relative
by David Thomas
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than average mystery, 19 July 2013
This review is from: Blood Relative (Paperback)
Well-written and lots of action, much of it set in Berlin (the rest is in Yorkshire, yay!) The protagonist's search for a reason why his wife killed his brother takes him into the murky world of the Stasi and the hideous crimes carried out by the East German state as recently as the 80s.There are some gaps - it's a bit TOO difficult to get to know what the villain is up to until the last minute and I was left looking back through the book to see if there were any clues I'd missed. But all in all a good read, and I'd recommend it.

The Man Who Forgot His Wife
The Man Who Forgot His Wife
by John O'Farrell
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.99

2.0 out of 5 stars disappointing, 7 July 2013
I've quite enjoyed John O'Farrell's other books but this one was a disappointment. The characters weren't likeable - particularly the wife. J O'F obviously goes for lairy women with a taste for cringe-making practical jokes - all his heroines seem to be like that - who would be an absolute nightmare in real life. The friends of the couple were so one-dimensional they might as well not have been there. Even when he's assuming the voice of a thoughtless slob, the author's personality comes through, unfortunately as a middle-class lefty bloke who's deeply ashamed that he even IS a bloke. There are some sharp bits of humour but they're outnumbered by the many lame and phoned-in gags. The whole thing degenerates into sickening goo - AND the whole premise was tackled better by Mil Millington in 'Instructions for Living Someone Else's Life'.

4.0 out of 5 stars Continuing the Ruth Galloway story..., 1 Jun. 2013

Another good read from Elly Griffiths - as in her other books the interactions between the main characters are as important as the central mystery. More pagan goings-on than in the previous books, which is saying something! Still, she pulls it off.

The House at Sea's End: The Dr Ruth Galloway Mysteries 3
The House at Sea's End: The Dr Ruth Galloway Mysteries 3
Price: £4.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Atmospheric murder mystery, 15 Mar. 2013
This was the first Elly Griffiths book I'd read and I enjoyed it a lot - looking forward to reading all her others.
The main characters are likeable and original, and the Norfolk setting adds a bit of atmosphere. The plot isn't that great (although not as daft as some I've read recently)but the characterisation and her engaging writing style more than make up for it.

This dish is about 10 in across but only shallow. I've filled it with water and it's like a paddling pool for my snake!

This book is SOO beautiful! I first saw a copy in the library and couldn't wait to get one for myself. It's big (around A3) size with gorgeous and colourful pictures of animals and plants on every page. Some of them aren't scientifically accurate but this just adds to their charm. Particularly suitable for snake enthusiasts!
