Cherringham - Murder on Thames: A Cosy Crime Series
Cherringham - Murder on Thames: A Cosy Crime Series

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this unlikely but fascinating partnership, 2 Nov. 2014
Murder on Thames is the first in this new cozy crime series and I absolutely loved it!

We're introduced to the two main characters: Jack Brennan, a blunt and to the point American, who had never signed up to any of the English rituals of politeness, antiquated manners and codes of behaviour ...... and single mum Sarah Edwards who has come back to her home village after her divorce.

I quickly warmed to both of the characters, I enjoyed their first encounter where Sarah thought Jack was just a rude American and Jack thought Sarah was both persistent and sarcastic.

Gradually, as the plot develops, they form an unlikely but very intriguing partnership, they both bring something different to the crime investigation, and I loved their interaction. The police don't think Sarah's friend was murdered, Jack and Sarah do and they set out to prove it.

This had a great plot that kept me guessing and wanting to read on, the well-contained chapters were short and neat, each with a simple title, the main characters were well developed for such a short story. They both have their own contacts and individual ways to solve the clues and I'm really looking forward to seeing how they solve other murders in the next books. I also can't wait to find out more about them and watch their relationship grow.

If you enjoy crimes set in a cosy English village then I would definitely recommend you add this to your reading list.

Blood Dimmed Tide, The (W. B. Yeats)
Blood Dimmed Tide, The (W. B. Yeats)

3.0 out of 5 stars The story was all over the place, 1 Nov. 2014
The Blood Dimmed Tide weaves fact and fiction in this story of poet W.B. Yeats and his friend Charles Adams, "the ghost catcher" and ex Medical Student, who narrates most of the story.

Yeats is a member of a secret occult society called The Golden Dawn (formed in 1888) of mystics devoted to the practice of medieval and eastern rituals of magic.

While attending seances in London Yeats is singled out by a young Irish girl, Rosemary O'Grady, who has recently been murdered and asks Yeats to help her. Strangely, he had also recently received a letter from her telling of her torment.

He despatches Charles Adams to Ireland to try and find out who killed Rosemary, though he fears he is on a folly of a mission and doesn't really know what to do or what's expected of him.

This is where the story takes off as Adams becomes involved with Ireland's secret society of women, the abandoned and ruinous estates, the turbulent Atlantic Ocean and rebellious women on horseback.

But I did feel that it somehow lost it's way also, I didn't know what the author was trying to tell us, was the book a mystery, is it a paranormal story, is it about Ireland's struggles for freedom, or is it about Yeats? It touched on gun running, German weapons and smugglers. The story was all over the place, there was too much going on and it felt like the author didn't know himself what it was focused on, trying to fit everything in but not going into great detail about any of them.

Unfortunately, this book was not for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Uplifting, 30 Oct. 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is another beautiful Stacy Gregg book.
My niece read this book with deep fascination.
Any novel about a real life Princess is bound to capture the imagination of a young girl.
My niece is 11 and she loved the book.
There are no dark issues in this book. It is uplifting and really well written, drawing in the reader.
Yes there are some arabic names in the book, but this only adds to the excitement of the story.

A real good read and the cover and the chapter drawings are beautiful.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good value for money, 30 Oct. 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I thought these speakers were decent value for money.
For under £30 they are adequate.
I gave them to my son who is at uni and he liked them.
The sound is not comparable to say a bose speaker system. But you wouldn't compare a mini to say a Ferrari. ( unless you are stupid !!!)

The base sound is ok.
The treble is ok.

My only problem was the length of cable. This is poor. Another metre would have got it 5 stars.

Good for the money.

This book is a really good read with a fabulous story.
My 11 year old niece loved it.
She said it was like reading a story with herself and her friends in it.
She has passed it to one of her friends who in turn will pass it on to another friend.
This is a true recommendation.
Wonderful.

Magic of the Gargoyles: An Elemental Fantasy Novella
Magic of the Gargoyles: An Elemental Fantasy Novella

4.0 out of 5 stars Spells and Magic galore!, 28 Oct. 2014
Mika, a mid-level earth elemental, wants to be her own boss and her dream is to own a Pinnacle Pentagon Showroom but first she needs to finish making 12 of her one-of-a-kind quartz masterpieces, if she manages to sell them all she can then afford a down payment.

All is going well until a hatchling gargoyle literally lands in her apartment and desperately pleads for her help in rescuing her kidnapped siblings.

Together with her friend Kylie they try to think of a plan to rescue them before they are sold to people who want them for their own selfish dark magic reasons.

But to do so would cost Mika all her life savings and her dream, maybe even her life! She would be up against stronger forces than her magic, can she defeat them or will she be defeated.

I really enjoyed reading this fantasy adventure novella, I liked the magical parts and the fact that magic dominates lives, (though some of the descriptions of the magic sounded complicated and were hard to picture), the story held my interest throughout, I wanted to know what would happen, there were illusion spells, air spells, magic traps, spell lights, good versus evil, it had all you could want in a fantasy adventure.

Even though this was a very good stand alone novella, I do hope that the author can develop this magical world into a series as there seems a lot of potential for further adventures for Mika.

I would certainly recommend this to any fantasy fans.

A Multi Timer.
Ok so you can time 4 different cooking times at once with this timer.
I found it difficult to keep a track on the 4 dishes I was cooking.
Is that me or do you have to have a " special " mind!!!!!

This timer is ok.

My manual wind up one I use will probably get more use.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dark and Disturbing but very compelling, 21 Oct. 2014
This review is from: Hold the Dark (Audio CD)
Hold the Dark is one of the most unsettling, shocking and deeply disturbing books I've ever read. But it is also one of the most compelling.

The inhabitants of the Alaskan town of Keelut are not very friendly to outsiders, they look after their own, and they don't appreciate strangers coming and trying to meddle in their affairs. It is a sad and depressing town, but somehow this makes it more readable, more interesting .... what secrets are they hiding?

When the writer, Russell Core, makes a shocking discovery, the woman who had written to him and asked him to help find her son who was taken by wolves then disappears into the pitiless wilds of Alaska. But why? And why won't any of the villagers talk to him or help him?

Some of the incidents in the story are truly shocking, yet didn't stop me reading, I was totally engrossed in this darkest of dark tales, I wanted to know some answers and couldn't put it down. The writing was intelligent, never boring, always moving on, no words were wasted, I felt a sense of foreboding throughout.

A gripping and mysterious thriller that I would recommend to readers who enjoy a darker side to their novels.
