Steaming into the Firing Line: Tales of the Footplate in Wartime Britain
Steaming into the Firing Line: Tales of the Footplate in Wartime Britain
Price: £2.99

4.0 out of 5 stars A very interesting collection of short stories, 10 Dec. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This group of tales of GWR engine crews during the Second World War is an enlightening, albeit fictional, look into the lives of those who operated steam trains back in the day. Some of the technical stuff is possibly of more interest for an enthusiast, but it's still worth a read.

The Red Effect (Cold War Book 1)
The Red Effect (Cold War Book 1)
Price: £3.59

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not brilliant, 3 Dec. 2014

A highly detailed and well-researched 'modern' update of 'Red Storm Rising', with a strong emphasis on the human factor. However, sometimes the detail is bit excessive and this probably needed a bit better editing as some bits get repeated.

Worth checking out.

A superb novel featuring the War Doctor, this is superbly written, has some Daleks that are a real threat and portrays the wonderfully created War Doctor very well.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great little compendium, although the Kindle version has issues, 26 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is the fourth (IIRC) edition of this background guide to the Discworld, covering up to 2012; there has been another book since (Raising Steam) that will result in further changes. While enjoyable, the table of contents page on the Kindle does not have a breakdown by letter.

Worth getting, although you might prefer the paper form if browsing.

4.0 out of 5 stars A highly enjoyable book, 12 Jun. 2014

While quotes compilations are easily findable on the Internet; they're not as well organised as this. A couple of good bits got omitted, but there is some obscure stuff that is really good added instead.

License to Pawn: Deals, Steals, and My Life at the Gold & Silver

5.0 out of 5 stars Short but sweet, 7 May 2014

This look at the backstory to one of the most popular cable shows in the USA and one that has aired widely overseas isn't very long but is full of great information. Laying open the at times turbulent pre-show lives of the Harrisons, it also reveals the real reason why pimps wear so much bling.

Well worth buying.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but sometimes a bit zany, 25 Feb. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The Tenth Doctor is well portrayed in this novella, but ultimately, the plot isn't that well developed and the prose can get a bit too zany at times. Still worth a read though.

Doctor Who: The Vault
Doctor Who: The Vault
by Marcus Hearn
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £5.00

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb anniversary book, 8 Dec. 2013

This review is from: Doctor Who: The Vault (Hardcover)
This is an excellent tie-in for the recent 50th anniversary; with rare images, great facts that most fans wouldn't know (there are a couple of errors that have come apparent since this written, such as the role of Kit Pedler and when the show switched to 625-line) and a strong overall presentation.

Definitely worth getting for your coffee table.

4.0 out of 5 stars Strong but not one of his best, 4 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Terry Pratchett significantly advances the technology and social world of the Disc in this book, which contains the usual plethora of jokes (some of which you need to be a rail enthusiast to spot) and a pretty good story.

One big drawback in this is the sheer number of the comic footnotes this series is famous for - 78 in total and a struggle on Kindle - but that should not deter you from buying this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Short but very sweet, 18 Nov. 2013

While not the longest book of all time, this is an excellent companion to the blog and a strong memoir of the life of a Doctor Who fan.
