3.0 out of 5 stars Concise introduction to a serious problem, 10 Jun 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This short essay - almost an article - covers the subject matter in a broad and not particularly deep manner.

It highlights some sociological roots of violence against women, for example dowry payments and sex-selection during pregnancy (with preference for boys).

The problems associated with honour are briefly touched upon.

The thing that strikes the reader most is the institutional nature of anti-female prejudice. Several accounts relate how victims must work hard even to get their crimes registered by the police, and the lack of professionalism by the police and local governments in relation to this issue.

I was expecting a more academic text, with perhaps more insight into the particular failings of specific institutions, possibly interviewing Indian lobbyists, politicians, women's groups, police officials etc, however these are lacking. Aside from some references to the differences between oral and written portrayals of female gods, you'd be hard-pressed to recognise these problems as being specifically Indian.

Therein lies the problem with the text and the gravity of the situation. The issues covered will be familiar to anyone familiar with feminist approaches to societal bias against women.

The emergence groups of sexually frustrated young men is highlighted as an effect of sexually-selective birth and a cause of much female abuse (from abortion and infanticide to rape and polyandry).

The text offers little in terms of a solution, political or otherwise. It does suggest that a cultural shift where women/wives are permitted to look after their OWN parents in their old age would lead to a greater valuing of female worth. The tradition of a dowry and that a wife cares for her in-laws means girls are often seen as a burden to a family. However, once the male-female ratio is restored it is not made clear how this would eliminate the remaining anti-female attitudes. Certainly where the male-female ratio is equal sexism still exists. The brutality and widespread nature of abuse against women in India is not fully explained by this skewed ratio.

An interesting read, however a little brief and not as analytical as might be hoped. Nevertheless this does open up avenues of further research - I would, for eample, be interested to watch the film "Matrubhoomi: a nation without women", and look further into the referenced source material.

1.0 out of 5 stars Non-functioning product, illegal advertising, abject customer service. Do not buy., 17 Jun 2011
Take a look at the list of models this claims compatibility for. Let me copy and paste from Amazon:

Ex-Pro Panasonic VW-VBG130, VWVBG130, VW-VBG130A, VW-VBG130E1K [EXACT] High Power Plus+ 2 Year Warranty Replacement ID Secured Lithium Li-on Camcorder Battery for Panasonic Camcorders HDC-SD1, HDC-SD5, HDC-SD9, HDC-SD10, HDC-SD20, HDC-SD100, HDC-SD200, HDC-SD300, HDC-SD600, HDC-SD700.

That's what I did, and seeing my model there, I ordered the battery.

Unfortunately, the battery was not compatibile at all, not fitting the battery slot. Ex-Pro were vastly unhelpful in responding to my problem, insisting that since i'd opened the box it could not be returned. I tried in vain to point out that they had advertised a compatibility that does not exist, giving them the link to check this out for themselves. At no point did they acknowledge this fault, so even now, they are illegally advertising this product.

Notice I have not specified precisely which model I have, but it's on the list, i'm looking both the list and my camcorder right now.

I'd quite like this company to go out of business for their lack of acknowledgement of wrong-doing on their part.

4.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading, poor publication, 5 Feb 2011
This review is from: Mein Kampf (Paperback)
A good political read, very interesting to hear Hitler's rationale contemporaneously. Two things bother me about this book. The edition itself is not the best edited, a few spelling mistakes here and there, frequent enough to be noticable. Second, the back of the book, which sells Hitler as an "evil genius" or "monster". Mein Kampf has its own merits and logic. It is counter-productive to dismiss the book as worthless. Hitler was not a monster, he was a human, and reading this book helps you understand how people are able to act like monsters. Censorship of literature is a hallmark of fascist states, and I think its a shame that there is in some quarters consent that the content of the book is worthless, or that only a Hitler sympathiser would read it. It is as worthwhile as any book written by a political leader would be. Interesting to me was how Hitler provides commentary on his own assumptions. For example, before launching into a tirade against democracy he describes how he came to admire democracy, and how then he came to hate it. He is self-aware of his own motives. I was shocked to hear him admit to being "uncomfortable" with anti-Semitism, being rather liberal at first (he thought Jews were discriminated against for their faith, which he considered intolerant). Then he describes how he came to hate the Jews himself. This also belies the sometimes voiced defence that there was no anti-Semitism in Austria/Germany pre-Nazis. It is interesting to see in his more obviously political statements how he blames Jews for many problems, an obvious form of propaganda. Very obvious in fact, because he describes the power of propaganda in detail. I found this a fascinating read.

Recommended to anyone who has an interest in history, politics, and sociology.

5.0 out of 5 stars Professional quality product (at a premium price), 9 May 2010
These books are phenomenal (as far as books go!). They are exactly as described, the perfect manuscript book. I use it as a logbook for project work, where the double margins allow a good variety of reference and marking systems to be used. The cover is very durable and protects the pages within easily. These pages are very firmly bound to the spine. I kept written records in this book over a period of months, and despite stressing the spine by gluing many printed pages and research clippings inside, AND shoving it in my bag everyday even after a year there was no sign of pages loosening or the cover tearing.

The only quibble I have is the price...no doubt you do get what you pay for, however the price means that I use these books only for the most important projects, while really I would like to use them for everything!

Rotary Gents Gold Plated Waterproof Quartz Strap Watch
Rotary Gents Gold Plated Waterproof Quartz Strap Watch

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple and stylish, 9 May 2010
The craftsmanship of this watch is superb. Little details like the clasp mechanism show that this is indeed a work of high quality. The strap leather is a rich brown, and the dial is a beautifully soft gold. In some lights the dial looks copper or bronze- which makes it complement the brown leather strap phenomenally well. When in day- or bright- light the dial takes on its lovely golden hue. The dial is clear and simple to read, adding to the understated nature of the watch.

I don't wear this as a day-to-day watch (I think it's too nice for that!), but as a dress watch for special occasions or a night out. As to longevity, I have not owned the watch long enough to comment, however, the makers lifetime guarantee is a testament to the faith which should be had in the quality of this product.

Simple and stylish, quite simply a beautiful watch.
