The Discovery of the Tomb of Tutankhamen (Egypt)
The Discovery of the Tomb of Tutankhamen (Egypt)

4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, 26 May 2014

Spoiled a little due to the - for me - over long forward and preface . However Carter's enthusiasm really comes across. His detailed explanation of artefact recording and preservation reveals how much work and effort went into handling each item. Today we would have laptops , phones ,computers laser scanning and other tools . Then it was hand drawn sketches painstakingly drawn maps , floor plans and objects photographed for scale and position , the pictures themselves being developed in another room in the tomb now serving as a darkroom! This tomb along with many others suffered at the hands of grave robbers , the broken door seals evidence of the damage. The inner burial chamber was however intact and you can almost anticipate the the tension as the first light in over several thousand years fills this tomb.

First World War navy adventure. An officer is given command of a small flotilla , and charged with patrolling the Channel . With more luck than judgement they sight and sink a U Boat , rescue the the injured captain ,but while they make .and thir say back to port the German officer lets slip a code word and a threat that the British defenders will face an offensive to be lauhed shortly . Took a while to warm up for me but enjoyed reading the battle scenes ,tension nicely built and the action well described. A little disappointed in the end would have liked to read the Top Brass comments when our hero 's prediction was proved right !

Secure communication in time of war is an invaluable asset, the army that can ensure all parts are aware of their duties will make victory easier. It is the English Civil War and Thomas Hills' skills are needed by the king. Adept at both encrypting and decrypting code Thomas is summoned to Oxford where the king has taken up residence. There he toils breaking intercepted enemy messages and devising keywords for the kings forces to use in their messages. But there is a spy in the camp closer to the king than anyone knows ,a cruel cold evil man that will break the heart of Thomas ,try and break his will and makes an attempt on the queen. Murder, betrayal , treason and imprisonment just a few of the hurdles to overcome in this rattling tale . E enjoyed it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Their Finest Hour, 4 May 2014

A detailed account of the daily - and nightly - battles faced by both pilots and ground crews defending these shores in 1940. While it cannot have been for those involved directly, the opening chapters were a little tedious listing each squadron sent up to defend against various fighters and bombers. But sticking with it you're drawn in to the conflict, and soon marvel at how initially the outnumbered Hurricanes and Spitfires go up against 100's of enemy bombers and their fighter escorts day after day with little rest. While today we look forward to sunshine and fine weather , the crews of fighter command knew fine weather would mean more enemy attacks.
Accounts of pilots being shot down and their terrible injuries illustrate just how the few held back the attacks and threat of invasion.

3.0 out of 5 stars Q all over again., 15 April 2014

The first Voyager book I've read, but unfortunately not the first in this particular series. It therefore refers to events and characters from previous stories I knew nothing about so found them difficult to u understand the relevance. Conversations with several characters all named Q take a while to make sense. While I enjoyed reading about the events on board ship I found the plot regarding the existence of the Q and OMega continuums hard going. I' like to read more of the series though but in the right order. Wonder if the kindle guys could come up.With a 2of 4 3of 4 note Tec. Or would that be too Borg like?

4.0 out of 5 stars Bad to Worse?, 6 April 2014

Part 2 of this thrilling adventure.Having made contact with Jacob ( a research scientist at a distant Alaskan facility ) Emily leaves New York to travel north. The red rain has fallen over all the continent and killed off every human and animal.Emily has to navigate north to -hopefully -safer areas. But she will encounter more threats along the way, and it seems the further she travels the more dangerous things get. An absorbing second part of this story, full of set backs, you feel yourself willing on Emily ,and celebrating her triumphs however small.Looking forward to part 3!

4.0 out of 5 stars Apocalypse Now?, 27 Mar 2014

Emily was a reporter for a New York paper, was , until the day of red rain, an event brushed off by her and her fellow citizens as they got on with their day. What she couldn't know was that the rain was both universal and deadly, soon contact would be lost with other parts of the world and her home city.It would be bad enough finding yourself the sole survivor in the city, but further horrors unfold as it seems that the dead citizens are also the building blocks of an alien race replacing humanity.A fascinating read of how one woman is forced to adapt to a whole new way of life and her determination to survive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chilling,!, 18 Mar 2014

Douglas Allen doesn't exist, but I hate him,George Bridgeman doesn't exist , but I'm desperately wishing he'll be found.Sean Corrigan also doesn't exist, but I'm willing him on to succeed in his investigations. They exist only in the authors imagination and feature in this superbly written book that had me hooked just a few pages in.Can you be on the edge of your seat reading a book? Is it possible to experience heart pounding tension just reading words off a page.? Without doubt a psychological thriller brilliantly crafted.

John Shakespeare , (Williams brother no less ) is faced with hunting the killer of Lady Howard, found butchered in 16c London. His investigation will draw in assassins, thieves and ne'er do wells aplenty.Add a determined and ruthless priest Hunter in Richard Topcliffe and things get dark and desperate. A highly enjoyable and fascinating tale set against the backdrop of Elizabethan London, sprinkled with period vocabulary adding to the historical feel. Found myself searching for further stories from this author.
