Terrible Kindle version butchers the book, 8 Nov 2012
For starters I think that this series of books is utterly wonderful - some of may favourite books in the whole world. I would definitley recommend them to anyone. In places they make me cry, they make me smile, I must have read the first and second books about 7 or 8 times each - I only just managed to get copies of the final books in the quartet recently and love them also.
HOWEVER! I would most definitley not recommend this Kindle version of the books. There is at least one entire page missing - I've not finished my re-read yet, so I don't know if there are more. The missing page is skipped entirely, with no page break or anything - it just makes the text look like nonsense.
There is also no search function enabled and the books are not divided up into chapters, so you can't skip between portions of the books except laboriously, a page at a time. If you feel like re-reading a certain section then good luck finding it!
The layout of the books is very confused - the preface has been placed before the publishers details and between each chapter there isn't even a single line space separating them. When poems or songs are printed some are shown centred as verses, but most are shown just like normal text, making them impossible to read or understand. I have come across garbled punctuation, spelling and paragraph layout, and incorrect words in the text also. Every now and then in the layout there is a large bank section for no reason - in the middle of a paragraph or chapter they'll just leave half a page blank. Also, it's terribly sad that the lovely maps included in the book are nowhere to be found in this Kindle version - they are so enlightening and I've really felt their absence!
It's a terrible, terrible version of these wonderful books and I am only halfway through the second book, so there may be more large errors still to come. I would never recommend this version of the books - the individual versions are available on Kindle for a very reasonable price, and I will be returning this version and buying those instead. Hopefully they are a much better transcription. The only reason I've managed to read this far is because I've read the books so many times, but I'd never want a first time reader to use this version.
