The Seventh Miss Hatfield
The Seventh Miss Hatfield
by Anna Caltabiano
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £10.49

1.0 out of 5 stars A great disappointment, 19 Sep 2014
When I first read the publicity for this book I was so enthusiastic that I ordered a signed copy. However the reviews & my own subsequent reading of this book delivered a very different scenario than that promised on pre publicity announcements.
I was given a free copy of this book & here is my review.
The initial premise of an 11 year old being enticed into a stranger’s house only to be drugged & dubiously abducted is an unusual and jarring premise to accept & the subject matter was uncomfortable to me from the start. The central character, initially called Cynthia, seems to have completely lost her moral compass lurching through this book whilst consistently telling herself not to do something to only carry out the requested action anyway simply because she has been asked.
The whole premise of the book seems to suspend reality in an unbelievable way never really convincing the reader of the validity of the story. The characters are sketchy & unlikeable and I was never engrossed or drawn into the premise of this book.
I understand the author is very young & whilst I don’t wish to be negative I cannot recommend this book. It was a relief to finally finish it.

The Husband's Secret
The Husband's Secret

4.0 out of 5 stars A good summer read, 8 Aug 2014

If you’re looking for a lightweight read mixed in with a dash of moral turbulence & domestic trivialities spiced up with extra marital affair/s then this is for you. I read this book based on the sheer volume of positive reviews & was overall satisfied with the book. The first few chapters seemed disjointed & out of sync with each other but do carry on as the book gets better & slowly the three strands of story meld together. Like other reviewers the moral conclusion is debatable but then a book that leaves the reader debating what’s right has surely achieved its purpose & left an indelible memory on its reader? Overall a good read.

Words don't do justice to this amazing book. From the first page the reader is drawn into the parallel worlds of the Pilgrim & the Saracen. No intricately drawn character disappoints and multiple strands of an epic story intermingle effortlessly. I was bereft at the end. I hope there's a sequel in the making. A must read!!

So good. The story races along & the character of Nathan is skilfully drawn. Don’t be misled by the references to him in a cage, this isn’t for long. Refreshing story telling at its best. I can’t wait for the next instalment. More of the same please.

A light-hearted & entertaining book exploring the perspective of the world according to Don, a man with Aspergers negotiating his way through the world of relationships, hidden meanings, innuendos & what people really mean. Some laugh of loud moments & excellent writing interspersed with humour. Easy to read & consumed all in one sitting. Thoroughly recommended.

Better than the Lewis trilogy. This is a gripping story with complex & flawed characters that evoke sympathy & draw the reader in. An interesting crime drama set within another harsh environment where rain, thunder & ferocious winds are ever present. Thoroughly recommended.

1.0 out of 5 stars Trite with unloveable characters, 13 Jan 2014
This review is from: Sense & Sensibility (Hardcover)
This book was a huge disappointment. It was a struggle to keep going. The characters of Marianne, Belle and Margaret were shallow and irritating. Bringing the story into current day involved face book, iPods & saying `whatever' whilst behaving rudely to people that had helped & sleeping around. This book was a chick flick in the worse sense with weak & insipid characters. Jane Austen would be shocked at what her story had evolved into.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deliciously good, 13 Oct 2013

Jo Baker immediately draws the reader into the engaging world of Longbourn, albeit forcusing on characters who worked downstairs rather than upstairs. This book was an unexpected delight & was enthralling throughout. The main characters were engaging and rich in description. An unexpected gem. My only criticism comes at the end of the book but to say why would give away too much information. I look forward to seeing what Jo Baker writes next.

Dominion
Dominion
by C. J. Sansom
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £10.00

2.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as his other books, 6 Sep 2013
This review is from: Dominion (Hardcover)
A story written in a world where Churchill did not fight the Nazi's but England negotiated and accommodated them. Always before in C J Sansom's work his books are a rich source of historical facts but this book bucks that trend. The story trudges along painfully slowly & the characters attract little sympathy. It was an effort to finish this book. Bring back Shardlake!!
