4.0 out of 5 stars Looks great, as though it's more expensive than it is, 17 Oct. 2015

Looks great, as though it's more expensive than it is. Lasted for 3 years before it sadly stopped working, so I ordered another one!

3.0 out of 5 stars Golden oldie, 11 July 2011
This review is from: Bedazzled [DVD] (DVD)
This is a fantastic film. Forget the awful Liz Hurley remake, Cook and Moore hit all the right spots in this one.

'So why the three star review, then, if it's so good?' Well, I'm very glad you asked. The film itself is fantastic, but this particular edition has no subtitles. A huge disappointment for hard-of-hearing viewers.

But then it does have Raquel Welch in it which soothes the pain a little.

1.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat plodding and misogynistic, 11 July 2011
This review is from: Presumed Innocent (Paperback)
Presumed Innocent was recommended to me by a friend whose recommendations I am never listening to ever again. Events move at a swift pace that somehow never manages to become thrilling. The characters and situations are generally improbable - ebonics-talking judges, the conflicts of interest and the framing of Sabich. Probably the most offensive part of the book is its misogyny - practically every woman is presented as either a bitch, a whore, or a weirdo, sometimes all three at once. The only exception to this rule is one, solitary woman who is in a wheelchair, presumably because the author doesn't count her as being a proper woman. Then again, as a book that dates from 1987, I suppose it's very much of its time.

15-minute French ( 2 CDs + BOOK ): Learn French in Just 15 Minutes a Day

5.0 out of 5 stars Lots of bang for your buck, 11 July 2011
At well under £10 this is a great resource - the two CDs are full of short snatches of dialogue to help you with your phrasing, and the book is full of vocabulary and short tests to make sure you're getting things right. It also mixes informal and polite French so as well as getting the 'proper' way to say things you'll also learn some of the verbal tics and interjections that fluency requires. Very much recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pleased with them, 11 July 2011
This review is from: Reebok Hand Grips (Sports)
I bought these to improve my hand and wrist strength. The springs are firm but not too strong so good for doing basic reps. Didn't personally notice any squeakiness, but one quibble I do have is that because I have very small hands the grips tend to slide around a lot and the foam handles don't really provide enough purchase to combat that.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad shorts, 11 July 2011
Nicely padded and a good length, but consider going up a size if your body doesn't look like Lara Croft's because like most cycling gear it's not a very forgiving cut!

I've done a 60 mile continuous ride in them and had no problem with chafing, found them very comfortable to wear.

No frills, just right for the price.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sturdy but very heavy, 11 July 2011
Have had this lock for a while and nobody's nicked my bike yet despite my living in South London, so that's definitely a good sign. Don't rely on the supplied cable for anything important, but for securing your front wheel to the lock it's fine.

It is, as other reviewers have said, extremely heavy, probably a good 4kg. That's half the weight of my bike itself! Note that as well as being unwieldy, it's also not as secure as the Kryptonite locks - can't find a Sold Secure rating for it, and that matters for insurance.

The mounting bracket it comes with is hopeless - other reviewers found it too difficult to get out, I found it too easy. It fell off in the street once while I was cycling which is frankly just dangerous. Eventually I gave up using the mount because the hook that sits inside the bracket had come loose and would spin around so the lock would continually bang against my leg while I rode, thus gradually eroding my sanity.

I now use the Magnum as a backup lock in one of my regular lockup sites, rather than carrying it around with me - as I said nobody's made off with my bike yet so it seems to be doing the job it was made for. Far too cumbersome for an on-the-move lock, though.

4.0 out of 5 stars Back-to-school book for improving, 11 July 2011
It does seem to be aimed at children, so lots of cartoons and bright colours (I became very fond of young Pierre). The language focuses on the 'tu' form rather than the 'vous' form, which is an important distinction for adults! The book also contains a brief pronunciation and grammar guide, but mostly works on phrases for informal situations and chatting with friends. Lots of puzzles and encouragement to form your own sentences. Definitely worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Making the most of it, 11 July 2011
Super book crammed with interesting experiences, places, and suggestions. With any of these kind of books the problem is always going to be what's been missed out, but this book does its best to mitigate that with the sheer volume of information it contains.

The slightly laconic writing style nevertheless gives a sense of genuine pleasure in encountering new cultures and places, and supported by the lush photography fills the open reader with a wanderlust that demands to be satisfied.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good, useful, sturdy map, 11 July 2011
This review is from: Map of Europe (Map)
This laminated map shows a good overview of Europe. Don't expect too much detail, but it shows you all the major towns and cities and some of the main transportation lines within and around them. At only a fiver it's hard to go wrong!
