5.0 out of 5 stars Howard Hawks, Cary Grant, Rita Hayworth, and Thomas Mitchell what else ...., 18 Feb 2010
This review is from: Only Angels Have Wings [DVD] (DVD)
Is the fate of Hawks, along with Ford and Capra, director of the largest imaginary traditional Hollywood. It is rare for him to create the prototypes of all kinds, but is almost always the one to fine-tune models insurmountable. There were several films firstdealing with civil aviation (as Air mail of John Ford, for example) but before this, everyone else seems more or less successful imitations. Punctuated by a relentless succession of night and day, punctuated by small gestures that give a subtle musicality Skin (light his cigarette from the person seizing it), has all the characteristics which make it unmistakably a film by Hawks, the director who has never made shot that possessed the vulgarity of his signature, while impressing the entire film is a suspicion of sentimentality that makes it "one of his most melancholy and romantic fantasies" (Molly Haskell). What makes it so typical of its author? The uniqueness of the place where it runs throughout (an airstrip, an office and a bar) as in many of his films, the strong camaraderie of a group subject of the narrative, action driven by dialogue, the dialectic of the sexes which always males and females fight for dominance not only mutual pleasure but a kind of organic. Film of cruel humor, grief and seduction impending fierce, is one in which, perhaps more than elsewhere, Hawks ventured to tell his life: only the danger and imminence of death justifies the respect and redeem the cynicism of men; after the battle of the sexes is possible to love, even in an airport lost in the mists of South America. In such a mechanism also actors would do any good figure, but Cary Grant, Rita Hayworth, and Thomas Mitchell are not the kind of players that leave their marks in the shot. And it shows.

5.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable war movie., 18 Feb 2010
This review is from: Sahara [DVD] [2002] (DVD)
Funny war movies - adventure with a Bogart always great, the year after "Casablanca." And 'one of those classic films, as they did once, with the' last part really compelling. Korda is perfectly at ease in general, probably has no great ideas, there is some over-exemplification (the Nazi prisoner), but overall directs a film absolutely fascinating.
In the Italian edition have cut the scene when they find the Italian soldier and I think a piece of the German prisoner interrogation.

5.0 out of 5 stars A science fiction movie with pretensions to high moral., 18 Feb 2010
This review is from: Tarantula [DVD] (DVD)
The film is primarily known for being regarded as the debut film by Clint Eastwood (interprets a jet pilot) is considered a masterpiece of cinema from the B-movie and in America the film opened in theaters December 14, 1955, in Italy in 1956, I do not know exactly the year in England.
The original poster of the film contains two errors: the first is that the tarantula has shown only two eyes instead of eight, the second is that the spider holds in her mouth a woman screaming played by Fay Wray, a scene that does not appear in the film.
Shouted the drama of man in contrast with the silent drama of the insect which enlarges a true protagonist of the film, Spider (awarded by beautiful sequences in the subjective, from his point of view) is the desperation of a nature brutally violated. since it first appeared nervous while fighting against the glass cage that imprisons the tarantula is the "what" primordial zampettante, elusive that science and reason are trying to keep under control with no success. no matter if in the end the monster targeted by aviation succumb: the morality of Jack Arnold leaves no room for a final smile

4.0 out of 5 stars Unique Tinto Brass really enjoyable it looks like Fellini sex and dreamy, any surrealist will love, 18 Feb 2010
Given the shortage of inspiration (and collections), Brass temporarily leaving the soft-porn and try to return to its roots earnest. The result is an embarrassing yellow-noir melodrama where the inconsistency, the fragmented narrative and absurdity dominate. Laughable. Sic Visible. Tinto Brass obsessed lovers, do not worry he'll get over soon. However one sees his hand: beautiful shots, Giancarlo Giannini enhanced by close-ups, but aihme 'a plot to amateur! Tinto excuse, I saw almost all your movies, but this just does not deserve your talent ... I would in my drawer a drama series, which appears the Budapest of the late 70's, .. please contact me.

4.0 out of 5 stars (Cheeni Kum means "Less sugar") Elegant, very touching and as the title suggests a film subtle in flavour, 18 Feb 2010

Buddhadev Gupta runs a popular Indian restaurant in central London, where every day is arrogantly his culinary creations.
His life is turned upside down when he meets Nina, a young customer who dares to challenge his day delicacy. The rough chef gradually falls in love with the girl, and he even manages to make a breach in his heart ...
I apologize to 'the author of this aphorism, but I find it perfect for inclusion in a review "... .... I'm also a good cook ... and many times I made a mistake in preparing a dish ... even if I am not touchy like this Buddhaev ... but let me say I never met a woman so beautiful in the place where I work

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting "documentary" on the life in Malta durin the last war, 18 Feb 2010
This review is from: The Malta Story [DVD] (DVD)
The British attempt to defend Malta from the invasion of Italy and Germany. Beautiful scenes of formation flights, and good photography of the places in black and white.
A classic of another era. Recorded shortly after the war he tackles the issues in perspective patriotic, between love and sacrifice, mixing excellent scenes of real airplanes with "painful" pseudo animations. A bath in the memory of those who has "some" years more, with the memory of the first films seen in the cinema.
An interesting "documentary" for major youth. Certainly do not expect a Hollywood spectacle, but you will find the honest work with an artisan as Sir Alec Guinness always at his high.

5.0 out of 5 stars A working girl a little bit 'Mad Max, 18 Feb 2010
This review is from: Cherry 2000 [DVD] (DVD)
Cherry 2000 is a mechanical doll just like a woman and capable of providing absolutely ... human. One day the android goes down and its owner (Ben Johnson) goes on a rampage, also because 'the replacement part is needed in a place ravaged by nuclear war. With the help of a beautiful and very human guide (Melanie Griffith) the man will leave 'in search of the deposit, but will discover' that a real woman is better, much better than a machine.
B-movie of a certain taste, inventiveness, and thus eye, even more expensive than average of its pari. Affascinante, energetic and at ease, after the success of Working Girl,M.Griffith demonstrates the versatility and spirit of the game a bit 'parody of this Mad Max feminine. The cast, the old "hard" Dana Andrews, and two icons of John Ford: Harry Carey jr. and Ben Johnson. An homage that is bestowed to two famous movie robots of the past: carcases of mechanical beings in the cemetery you can see through Robby the Robot (Forbidden Planet) and Gort (The Day the Earth stood still). Unavailable for a long time, Cherry 2000 has recently been reissued in DVD format.

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute Harryhausen classic, 18 Feb 2010
The Beast From 20000 Fathoms aka in Italy "The awakening of the dinosaur" despite being a film made in economy with great success. The Harryhausen tricks are not the best, but decent fit in the tradition of his teacher O'Brien. Among actors, it is worthwhile to emphasize the presence of the excellent Cecil Kallaway placid and angelic-looking (already betrayed husband of Lana Turner in the Postman Always Rings Twice) and two characters, the one often seen in the films of John Ford - the granite Jack Pennick - the other, the future star of westerns of Sergio Leone - a Lee Van Cleef still without a mustache but still with a thick head of hair.
The original title is borrowed from the homonymous story (in Italy known as "The Mermaid") by Ray Bradbury, to whom Harryhausen, a script already completed, persuaded Warner to buy the rights. The scene where the monster is attracted by the light of the lighthouse and destroys it, just a reminder to the pages of Bradbury.

5.0 out of 5 stars The magic of the film jointed with The Mastery of a magician of the camera, 18 Feb 2010
The magic of this film (and perhaps the entire work of the Master Bava) is that seeing it, find it beautiful, just do not understand why. Mastery of a magician of the camera, which you can digest all (some amazing "effettacci" as blood-paint on the target dummy or mediocre investment, flou) with the haggard beauty of his pictures. When zooming into poetry (and other Kubrick also the dismissal will be granted an extended zoom baviano in Eyes Wide Shut ...) Funny movie, though below the quality standard of the director, has some nice idea and I can still entertain the spectator. The screenplay is quite illogical and scombiccherata (as sometimes happens in his films) and yet it is not just interesting and tasty. For years, disappeared from my country (Italy), was then finally revived thanks to Sky. Small gem of a master who deserves to be seen and reassessed. One of the most beautiful Gothic ever made and kept for years in the cellar for the mediocre (and misunderstood) The house of exorcism. A macabre flavor without equal, the introduction of select and choice director who then become cliché horror world (see the mannequins and the reflection in bright red wine from silver recovered later), and above all a director who delights us with careful camera movements always unpredictable and that can give dignity to an actress statuette as Sommer.

4.0 out of 5 stars If porn can be understood as a genre....., 17 Feb 2010
This review is from: Deep Throat [DVD] (DVD)
... this film shows it in full, is his masterpiece. French title: Gorge profonde. Memorable one final wish: "and deep throat to you all." In some copies the director has signed Jerry Gerard. The Lovelace (1949-2002 in road accidents), also dubbed the "Pizzo of love", was forced to shoot the film (made in Miami in a week) from the first violent husband, who threatened with a gun and did not ever see a proceeds of her work after a cancer from which he recovered, he became a nurse dedicated to the defense of the woman and attack the porno industry. In Italy the film accompanied the birth of the rooms at red lights. Following the Watergate scandal, where the term "deep throat" was used to label the anonymous informant, the title of the movie was also used by journalists to describe someone who talks too much.
