On Robin Hill: A Red Level ELF Book (ELF Books)

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but where are the rest of the series?, 16 April 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I went to the ELF website to help understand why this book was written with the story in lower case one way round and then if you turn it upside down and start at the back, it is the same story in uppercase (but with black and white pictures, not colour as at the front). The reason for this seems to be that beginning readers find it easier if upper case and lower case are not mixed. The book looks lovely and with a story the kids can read and feel they have achieved something with big words like umbrella. There are meant to be 6 books at this level, but I cannot find the other 5 anywhere! The next level up (orange) also only has one out of 5 of the series on Amazon, while yellow and green (where uppercase and lowercase are finally mixed and the book only reads in one direction) are nowhere to be found! I understand that this is newly developed and later books haven't been written yet, but the earlier books should be out by now. This series of books scores higher than any other like Oxford Reading Tree (which we have tried), Peter and Janet & John (which I learned from) and Jolly Phonics on the Rose review, which lays down criteria for successful reading books. I would buy more of these books if they were available!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great collection, 25 Jan. 2010
I bought this for my 4 year olds. So far I like it best out of the fairy tales books we have; Dk first fairy tales and others. Each story is retold by a different writer and illustrator. There are some of our favourites like Val Biro and Rachel Isadora. The stories are not watered down, like in some collections- Little Red Riding Hood and two of the three pigs do get eaten by the wolf and all of Henny Penny's friends are eaten by the fox.
My kids love it and want to read story after story. It is a good follow on from 20th century children's literature treasury. The stories are arranged in order of length and complexity, so those towards the end of the book may be more suitable for slightly older children.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book, 3 Oct. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I found this book after much searching. As all the children's Bibles I have come across do not include the Psalms, this book helps to fill that gap. It has 40 paraphrased Psalms in it, with large print on one page and a beautiful illustration on the next page (similar stlye to the front cover). Psalm 1, for example, is paraphrased: "When I listen to you, God, when I do what you ask me to, I am like a tree planted by a river, a tree full of fruit with leaves that are always green."

2.0 out of 5 stars Not really for kids, 3 Oct. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: little.com (Paperback)
I bought this for my young children and computer-loving husband but we did not like it. There is really not much depth to the story line or anything to appeal to children. There is very little to do with computers in it either- it is just about the dot visiting the queen who lives in a castle. It is more a display of Ralph Steadman's artistic abilities. I am sure if you enjoy his cartoons, you will enjoy this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars An inspiring atlas for kids (and adults), 3 Oct. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Children's World Atlas (Hardcover)
This is quite different from the atlases I came accross as a child. Inside the front cover is the only picture with all the world countries on it, with the pacific ocean at the centre and Europe over to the far west side. On the back page is a spread of all the flags of the different countries of the world.
The text starts with a bit about the solar system and where earth fits in and then looks at climate and population. The main section is then maps of different regions. For example, for North America, there is a double page with a satellite view of North America. This is followed by double pages of Western Canada and Alaska, Eastern Canada,USA Northeast, USA South, USA Midwest, USA Southwest, Mexico. On each of these pages there is a map in the middle with cities, borders, roads etc marked on it. Around the edge are photos of people, animals, buildings with accompanying text to give a flavour of that part of the world.
I think the pictures will appeal to a pre-literate child, while the text will give older children a lot to learn about. Each page has a "Did you know" section with interesting facts. This book will appeal to my children for many years.

A Charlotte Mason Companion: Personal Reflections on the Gentle Art of Learning
A Charlotte Mason Companion: Personal Reflections on the Gentle Art of Learning

4.0 out of 5 stars An overview of the Charlotte Mason approach to homeschooling, 3 Oct. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book is quite a hefty volume, but is written in an easy to read style. It is illustrated with Victorian ink drawings throughout with most double pages having at least one illustration.
Karen Andreola presents many different aspects of education, which is far broader than learning facts from books. It is about forming a child's character through a loving family environment, training in good habits, encouraging curiosity to learn, building faith through good example of the parents. This book encourages people to think about bringing up their children in a very different way from how most do it in today's rat race.
My only slight criticism is that after condemning the practise of asking comprehension questions as a way of checking if a child has understood a passage, she ends most chapters with a series of questions "for personal reflection or support group discussion". Surely, Karen, you should trust us readers to be able to narrate and discuss ideas without these prompts!

4.0 out of 5 stars good paint, 30 Sept. 2009
= Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
This is the standard paint we use with our 3 and 4 year olds. It comes ready mixed, so no powder all over the house! The paint doesn't dry out in the pots. Some of the lids break over time but they still close. The pots are small so they don't last that long, but I think it is still good value. The brush that comes with the set is rubbish however!

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid grounding, 12 July 2009
This review is from: Learn Zulu (Paperback)
This book is good for those people (like me) who like to learn a language by building up vocabulary and gramma. It is perhaps a bit dry with no pictures and pages of small print, but it breaks down this difficult language into manageable steps. It has a test at the end of each chapter and although it says that it only goes to a basic level, I suspect that it is quite a bit higher than other books. You can certainly get by quite well if you have learnt all the material in this book. There is a seond book by the same author "Learn more Zulu" which moves onto the subtleties of further tenses and adding bits onto words to slightly change their meanings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great DVD, 1 May 2009
My 3 year old son picked this up at the library. He and his sister are glued to it and want to watch it in preference to Disney and various children's shows. The DVD is educational showing them how tractors work the fields and what happens to animals in wintertime. I shall definitely be getting more of these.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works well, 30 April 2009

I used this on my 4 year old. We had always battled with her hair, being very tight curls. The product is easy to use and caused no irritation to her skin. It comes with a shampoo which rinses out pink until all the chemicals are removed, then it turns white. There is also a sachet of moisturising oil. This seems thick and not as good as the one I usually use, but when it soaked in her hair was really shining.
Over a month later, there are no tears when we do her hair and it is much more manageable. Well worth the cost!
