2.0 out of 5 stars Messy, 22 Mar 2014

Disappointing and messy. I chewed my way through it. There is little or no linkage between numerous of the adjacents, and on occasion each chapter can read like a separate standalone short story. There was no meaning or conclusion. At the end 2 characters came together for a hug. The end. The concept is quiet good, but poorly executed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb, 22 Mar 2014

What I have read recently and loved...Jupiter war, a reread of old fave Footfall, and this one. As a look at first contact, with the fog of, reasonable technology, and recognizable characters, this has all the right ingredients. I could not put it down and look forward to the next one. The author is fast getting there as a great British sci fi writer.

3.0 out of 5 stars Footfall was better, 6 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Invasion (Kindle Edition)
This book takes a lot from Pournelle's Footfalll, but has enough that is different to make it interesting. The ending is certainly different and a little less satisfying. One bugbear is the number of spelling and grammatical errors (you need better proof readers). But also the depth of characters and storyline is more superficial than Footfall. Good thing was that it was a real page turner, and I read it quickly. Bad side was it's lack of depth.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting idea...but, 30 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The basic storyline is quite interesting, but we could do with less of the superhero stuff (impossible jumps off buildings, slaughtering hundreds with a few bombs and a gun etc..). So at the half way mark (which is where Amazon has prompted me to review the book) I'm not having a great time with this one. More work on the underlying story and remove the superhero stuff please.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ouch...Kindle edition costs as much as a book, 14 Nov 2013
I like saving trees so buy Kindle books - when this one is at a suitable discount to the paper book, I'll think about buying it. Get your pricing right Amazon.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad...but slightly bizarre mix of themes, 14 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Proxima (Hardcover)
So humanity struggles to reach the next star system. Convicts are sent to settle there (sounds like the old British Empire). Lots of people die and the early settlements are a mess. End of part 1. Part 2 - a magic gate to the stars is found that allows all the humans to go home and/or colonise the new planet without all that messy space travel...yawn, am losing interest. Another gate to another starsytem is found...end of book, get ready for another 10 to read the next book which will be a repeat of this one. Sorry, it started well with all of the long haul space flight to find another planet, colonise it, struggle, die etc... And this was good reading...the latter part where they found the "magic" gate system was just silly. Either focus on one means of exploration or another, and no I don't intend to buy book 2 in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super...roll on the next one in the series, 14 Nov 2013

Could not put it down...the body count keeps rising as does the storyline. Generally I get depressed by series, but this one continues to deliver as it explores the development of Alan Saul, and moves steadily out of the solar system. Keep them coming.

2.0 out of 5 stars Silly, 14 Nov 2013

Sorry, but the mix of seals and underworld beasties just does not work. Poorly written, poor subject matter, did not finish the book. Avoid this one.

Your Garden - Week By Week
Your Garden - Week By Week
Price: 7.71

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic, 15 Jan 2012
He was one of the classic garden writers of his era. I found this book thanks to the gardening column of the FT and, along with Geoff Hamilton's weekly garden guide, is in permanent use throughout the year. Compare the old style gardener with the new, and you'll have a complete "what to do, when to do it" guide. Some bits are slightly out of date, such as the use of chemicals. But generally this is a superb book as a reference point and should be on every gardener's shelf.

1.0 out of 5 stars It is not very good, 16 Jun 2007
= Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
My daughter did not enjoy this game at all because it kept freezing, the contents were poor and lacked imagination, and it turned out to be a waste of money. So don't bother with it.
