Really interesting book which anyone with an interest in the Battle of Britain should read. Some interesting new ideas. Rehabilitating Goering was fascinating. Similarly the rehabilitation of the ME110 was an interesting exercise although i am still not sure (if the 110 was so good why didn't all nations just build twin-engine fighters to replace their single-engine variants?).

Like Bungay, Bergstrom stresses the superior German tactics and similarly like Bungay he extols the virtues of Keith Park as being the prime architect of Britain's victory. I feel he doesn't write as well as Bungay and doesn't outline his central claims with the same panache and force. But... it's a very good book.

I was extremely surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. I thought the concept was a little contrived and was a bit sceptical. But the book is superb and certainly an extremely engaging read. The narrative and insight are exceptionally interesting. the opinion are pithy and engaging. Even the areas with which one might disagree are thought provoking and interesting.

this is an outstanding book which ought to be read by anyone with an interest in naval history. the narrative is compelling, the style easy, the detail rewarding and the analysis penetrative. One of the best books of military history I have read and hard to put down.

By the way Craig Symonds' Midway makes a superb companion piece to this

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant. Even better than the first two, 26 July 2013

This book is absurdly good. He has a gift for writing and a great ability to portray events with pathos and subtlety. Full of interesting information and detail. Covers many areas about which I knew little

My only worry is that now I have finished the trilogy I don't know what to read.

This is a superb book, very well-writen, interesting, full of pathos. Atkinson has a real gift for history. He is more US-focussed than writers like Hastings or James Holland but even for a Brit it's gripping stuff

5.0 out of 5 stars superb book, 30 May 2013

superb book, well written, well researched, heavy with empathy. really enjoyable. i found the maps hard to follow for the land campaign but that's nitpicking. the treatment of land, air and sea are all impeccable. also recommend Neptune's INferno as a good companion piece
