I am a true Findus fan. He may wear green striped trousers and talk, but he is also a real cat, from the way he insists on Pettson getting up at once to attend to him and his preoccupation with food, in this case his birthday pancakes. Study the background of these delightful illustrations and see the strange life that is going on there, from what looks like a minature wolf stretched out in a deckchair in a tiny clearing outside Pettson's house to the enormous boot (or boot-shaped house?) on the horizon. And the affectionate relationship between Findus and Pettson is a delight.

5.0 out of 5 stars A long way from Kipling., 10 Jun. 2016

An excellent book, set in India in the early days of the Raj. The two main characters, Avery, the clueless young soldier, who has to learn fast and painfully, and Blake, who knows too much already set out on a difficult journey across India, which leads as much to self-discovery as to their quarry, the Byronic poet and novelist, Mountstewart. By the end Avery knows much more than he ever wanted to both about the government and the company he serves and everyone has lost something - including, for one character, everything including life itself. I thoroughly recommend this, and I am looking forward to reading the sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delicious smorgasbord of short stories., 18 May 2016
A delicious smorgasbord of short stories, interspersed with poems, including a whole new take on the encounter with Corinna first described so lyrically by Ovid, told from Corinna’s own considerably less idealised viewpoint, and some delicate haikus. And plenty of surprises - a Thessalian witch running a greasy spoon in Drawing Down the Moon wreaks a suitable and satisfactory revenge on her ex. And readers of fantasy will know, and the less experienced probably suspect, that trying out the spells in that book that you bought on impulse is probably not a good idea. But who would have thought that buying an artefact from the good looking red-head with the scarred lip would be an even worse one – or that it would all result in a dead (and rather cross) Viking materialising in the sitting-room? or that cat-sitting could have such unexpected hazards? but read Gray Magic for Cat Lovers and you will see. Mayday Comes Askew indeed when pretty Flora’s worshippers run into severe problems with the government and the heroine of Midnight Twilight meets something quite unexpected in the Arctic, when the legendary Sasquatch of the ice turns out to be…what? a Troll? a Monster? but whose Monster? the weirdness of the story is firmly grounded in the homelier details of Ellie’s experience: the fierce cold, the sled dogs, the hot sweet black coffee and the vast blank landscape of snow.
Everything seems to be going reasonably well for Karrin, the heroine of Gallery Green as she networks at an exhibition at Bristol’s Tate Modern, and she does, in the end, find herself able to sell almost everything she paints. Sadly it is a triumph she cannot enjoy as by this time she has also discovered that a rainbow is not always a symbol of hope. Kat, the heroine of Thirteenth Day decides to spend Christmas in her aunt’s isolated cottage in the country and finds herself snow-bound, but by no means alone. Strange gifts and stranger visitors arrive at her door, culminating in…what, exactly? it leaves no marks on the snow, but the story will haunt the reader along with the words of the pagan carol that evoked it. In the hygienic modern setting of “a steam treated holistic haven” in Green Tea sisterly rivalry ends very badly indeed. In The Abused and Him the very real memories of horror haunts an unhappy victim far more horribly than any ghost and in Damnation Seize My Soul in the futuristic setting of a massive space-ship, powered by ectoplasm, grounded on a barren planet as a haven for the thieves, rogues and pirates of the galaxy where space pirate captain Mercy Benks relives a life which began in Ancient Ireland and repeatedly ends in her violent death.
Princess Born lightens the atmosphere with a modern take on a well-known fairy-tale – and I will leave the reader to guess what story it is. In Pet Therapy the theme darkens again. Something nasty is loose in the Honeywood Hospice, and only the terminally ill Will, Molly and the ‘foul-beaked’ macaw Robbie are aware of it. But can they fight it, and what will it cost them? In Winter Eve the monsters are on the loose but with everyone in a Halloween costume they’re not easy to recognise and their identity may come as a shock. Jack Jumps Out of the Box is a noir detective story, set in a world of Nursery Rhyme and Fairy Tale, with some nasty twists and the collection ends with A Taste of Culture where a tourist from the Old Country tries to find a satisfying meal at an English country fayre where the food stalls are dominated by lentils and tofu.
A varied and fascinating collection with something for all tastes. Do try it.
