5.0 out of 5 stars Christmas Music At Its Best, 22 Nov. 2012

Bought off the back of a single radio play of When The Thames Froze, this album came to define Christmas 2011 for me. And, a tad early, I know, it's now being revived already for the 2012 countdown. Brings a smile to my face and a tear (or several) to my eyes... Just let it wash over you and absorb the essence of Winter Family, Friends, Tinsel, Mirth, & Festive Warmth - with a sprinkling of snow and distant jingle bells waiting in the wings

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Movie EVER, 25 July 2012
This review is from: Magnolia [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
not much to add to (most) others... simply THE MOST INCREDIBLE PIECE OF CINEMA: EVER! Blown away each and every time viewed - immersed, submerged, drowning in the awesomeness for three hours never seems long enough. Wowza Baby... True GENIUS

5.0 out of 5 stars Alternative Aussie Auters, 25 July 2012

They may have holed Lieutenant Pigeon with The Birdy Song but how anyone could pigeonhole this offering from Middle East is beyond my tiny little birdbrain... Pure WONDERMENT. Certainly Eclectic in style and range - from the downright recent-Sufjan-Steven-verging-on-latterday-Scott-Walker WEIRD (in a 'good' way) to (relatively) mainstream upbeat Empire-of-the-Sun (an album for Summer - finally arrived!!! Yeah!!!!!) vibes. Production very high too. Had it some months now, keep returning and the only recent album to compare in Consistent Quality and Wow-ness (tho' totally genre-different) is Decemberist's King Is Dead. Middle East Rock (well, just a bit, most of the time they 'lilt' leftfield cool...)!

5.0 out of 5 stars The carnival is not over, 24 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Having caught Erland & The Carnival 'by accident' at Brum's Glee Club felt had discovered a great new band - for me (though not my wife) the faux rock-folk ultimately disappointed in recorded form & the albums don't get revisited often.

But (for my wife!) thought give the Orkney Man's new incarnation a try and... love it! Different from the 'Carnivals', who felt too derivative (and not brilliantly so) where this Symphony is certainly Something Else - can't readily think of a comparison... Lilting, atmospheric, 'wind swept', Orkney distilled in vinyl (or whatever CD's are made from) perhaps :-)

Have I received discs from an alternate universe to all else? Was full of anticipation for something special - another Carnivale perhaps? Twin Peaks, X-files... ??? What I got was TOTAL DROSS! Wooden gurning 'acting' and leaden lazy story lines... Perhaps I'm just getting old! This is NOT Quality Drama - QED

5.0 out of 5 stars mesmerised..., 14 Jan. 2007
Quite simply.... MESMERISING! Bought for Xmas and has become the Must-Play of the many fine albums acquired at that time. Felt it special on 1st listen but needs a few to really work its way into your bones/blood/soul. And the lyrics are so.... lyrical! Closest comparisons for me are shades of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; with a hint of Safjun Stevens (who I adore!!!!)... Mmmmm... Magic.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Concrete is fully set...., 31 Mar. 2006

Bought on strength of review suggesting '1st post-Magic Numbers' album. Being total fan of latter, purchased unseen/unheard and am NOT disappointed. Yes, very Numbers-like, even guest vocals by Romeo on one track, but definitely their own mark stamped ('in concrete'?!) all over it. Very Swedish sound too - this is a Good Thing if you want chilled out, undemanding yet more-than-1st-meets-the-eye tunes & vocals (think CARDIGANS)... if like this type of groove: BUY!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not my usual thing, but....., 15 April 2005
Though a man of eclectic tastes 'World Music' is usually a turn-off term for me being more into contemporary Brit & US bands, singer/songwriters, etc. When this arrived as one of my 3 albums of the month from Rough Trade Album Club was ready to send it straight back! But..... come on, give it a chance! And I did. And... I like it. REALLY like it. Funky, cool, and not too "Worldy". Just enjoyable vibes and grooves to a psychedelic beat. So lose your prejudice, get down, enjoy!!!
