5.0 out of 5 stars Great film., 5 Jun. 2013
This is a marvelous film, with great performances by both Peter Lorre and Erich Von Stroheim. It is odd that von Stroheim is not listed as a leading character, because his performance is truly memorable.
What is also odd is that as of now, June 5th, 2013, this release is listed as a "pre-order" - with a release date of December 31, 2013.
Actually, it has already been released and is currently available elsewhere. You'll have to google it.

Personally, I would not want to wait until the end of the year to get it.

5.0 out of 5 stars An incredibly great and indispensable recording., 27 April 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The New Tristano (Audio CD)
Every note in every song on this CD is perfect. Every note is beautiful. The bass lines in the left hand are models for any bass player. What a sound!
And what incredible piano playing. It is a subject for psychoanalysis that this great man could be consistently overlooked by people writing about the great pianists in jazz. What swing! What momentum! And the ballad performance of "You Don't Know What Love Is" is hauntingly beautiful and deeply felt.

If you haven't heard this record you are in for a treat and a bit of a shock.

5.0 out of 5 stars Five stars for the music. Less for the CD sound quality., 9 Mar. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The music on this CD is essential. The playing of Lee Konitz and Warne Marsh is spectacular. The playing and inspiration of Lennie Tristano is absolutely breathtaking.
How this music could be so overlooked by the critics and bogus ax-grinding historians of Jazz is a subject for psychoanalysis.

The sole drawback of this presentation is the quality of sound. It is a hybrid and I have played it on a standard CD player. I cannot comment on how it might sound on a HACD player - but on a standard player the highs have been extremely accentuated. It is a little grating on the ears, and lowering the treble did not do much to make the sound more accessible.

In brief: You must hear this music. But as it is also available on standard CDs and vinyl, I must suggest that you acquire it in another format.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great playing by Bud Powell, 13 Jan. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Listening to this recording gives us an insight into Lennie Tristano's comment about Bud Powell's matchless intensity.
At the moment I am enthralled with the trio selections featuring Bud with Roy Haynes and Oscar Pettiford.
What an incredible trio. People who have been accustomed to the relatively sedate sound of most of todays piano trios will be astonished
to hear the fiery intensity of Bud's.
These recordings give us a seat at a table up front, right next to those lucky people who were there hearing Bud Powell live.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rathbone and Bruce ARE Holmes and Watson., 26 July 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
These films can be seen over and over again.
That is because Rathbone and Bruce are truly Holmes and Watson.
They are not acting.
They are completely natural.
And real.

Another great thing about these films is the quality of the supporting players.
Dennis Hoey IS Inspector Lestrade.
Ida Lupino is moving and fragile. Patricia Morrison is perfect. So is Hillary Brooke. So is Mary Gordon as Mrs. Hudson. Gale Sundergaard
is riveting.
So is Paul Cavanagh.
Lionel Atwill as Moriarty. George Zucco as Moriarty. Henry Danielle as the ultimate Moriarty.

But all the players are memorable and believable. Even if they only have a line or two.

This is great film making. Excellent photography and direction.
Perfect.

And these prints are great. Beautifully restored.

How many films can you think of that you can watch over and over again just for the pleasure
of being in the company of an ensemble of actors?

5.0 out of 5 stars A mixed blessing., 16 July 2008
"Lenny Bruce Without Tears " is rather morbid. The makers concentrate on the negative things that happened to Lenny, and not on his genius. They even include a photo of Lenny dead on the floor.
This photo stays on the screen for what seems like eons. As Lenny would say, "How are you going to follow THAT?"

The saving grace of this film is the fact that it includes some clips of Lenny performing on TV. It is interesting to see him coping with the rigid requirements on the early days of television - yet his wonderful and lovable personality shines through. Seeing him do some of his earliest routines is a treat. But, as I said, these wonderful extracts should be seen by themselves. Surrounding this material with the gloomy and morbid commentary does not do justice to Lenny.

5.0 out of 5 stars The performance film is great. "Without Tears" is somewhat morbid., 12 Jun. 2008
The "Performance Film" is great. It is true that Lenny is reading extracts from court records, but then he riffs on what he is reading. His renditions of some of his routines are truly funny. Too much is made of Lenny as a trail blazer in the use of street language. When Lenny talks, it is completely natural. His use of language is never for the sake of shocking people. Lenny even lampoons the fascination that people have with street language. (Redd Foxx, another wonderful comedian, also used street language in his act. He said that he didn't say anything that you wouldn't say if you dropped an anvil on your foot.)
The point is, Lenny Bruce is a great performer with wonderful contact with his audience and you have a chance to witness this in this film.
The second entry, "Lenny Bruce Without Tears " is rather morbid. The makers concentrate on the negative things that happened to Lenny, and not on his genius. They even include a photo of Lenny dead on the floor.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great film, 18 Feb. 2007

Alastair Sim is hilarious. Terry-Thomas is perfect. Ian Carmichael is also perfectly cast.

All of the cast of characters - even if they only have one scene - or even one line - are truly memorable and quotable.

Highly recommended.
