5.0 out of 5 stars Previously unissued recordings - fantastic find!, 27 Sep 2013
This review is from: Boston 1950 (Audio CD)
Lester Young Quintet from the Hi-Hat in Boston 1950 (tracks 1-14) and 1953 (tracks 15-16). The earliest tracks are prime Lester who sounds more inspired than usual in this period, the later tracks are fine but not on the level of the first. An interesting point for fans is that here is the only recording of "On a slow boat to China" by Lester! - and a fine version of "Body and soul"!
The sound is what you would expect from radiotranscriptions of the period, a little muddy but OK. An absolutely essential CD for Lester Young admirers!

2.0 out of 5 stars Sloppy production, fine music., 15 April 2013
The music is fine with many fine solos, but the overall production stinks! The CDs should have been checked before releasing them.
The first six tracks (The opener) on CD 1 are a little distorted, and track number 4 on the third CD (Blues de funk) is cut off more than a minute too early compared to the original recording!
See the remarks on Amazon.com.

5.0 out of 5 stars Henderson's hottest band?, 16 Dec 2012
This review is from: Cool Fever (Audio CD)
The Fletcher Henderson All Stars under the direction of Rex Stewart are clearly enjoying themselves at the reunion. This results in a spirited and very hot session with fine solos by Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, Rex Stewart, Hilton Jefferson, Emmett Berry, J.C. Higginbotham, Benny Morton, Dicky Wells .. et al.
This is a session not to be missed by lovers of swinging jazz!!

2.0 out of 5 stars This is an Elap CD!, 30 Mar 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is not the Pablo CD with Sonny Stitt et al., but a cheap compilation of live recordings in a rather lousy sound. The band is not very good, but Joe Turner does his usual thing. Not recommended to others than hardcore fans!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great band!, 18 May 2008
One of the best recordings of late Hawkins joining a band comprising of Johnny Hodges, Harry Carney, Ray Nance, Lawrence Brown, Aaron Bell and Sam Woodyard with the piano player in a swinging mood. Rarely heard tunes, or tunes written for the occasion, presents the small band in all it's glory - Hawk playing as if he always has been playing that kind of music, fx. a gorgeous rendition of Mood Indigo and the special Self portrait of the Bean.
I can not recommend it enough to all lovers of small band swing!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Ruby forever!, 21 Mar 2008
Very good playing by Braff who seems to be in high spirits. Accompanied by a competent trio Braff clearly is having a good time. Though not one of his greatest recordings,- this is an entertaining concert, which shows him at work enjoying himself, taking a lot more chances than usually.
It should be noted that the tune called "Little things mean a lot" on the CD actually is "These foolish things", so the title of the CD should be not be taken too seriously!
The recording is typically live, a little diffuse, but OK.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Webster!, 6 Feb 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a joy! Ben Webster surprises in this late stage of his career by playing very well indeed! In fact it looks like this makes Oscar Peterson and NHP very happy as they are smiling more and more as the concert proceed.
Fine pictures and fine sound , - this must be recommended to all fans of swinging, no-nonsense jazz!

2.0 out of 5 stars Barely passable Berlin concert, 18 Jan 2008
The quality of the film is barely passable, although it has some interesting moments. The band has Nelson Williams, Benny Bailey and ke Persson substituting for some of the regulars, but they do not leave any impact other that they mess things up behind Johnny Hodges on "Things ain't..." - and Wild Bill Davis is a bore..
The highlight is a fine rendition of "Don't get around much anymore" featuring Hodges. The concert from Copenhagen a few days later in the Masters series is much better having better music and above all fine pictures.
The bonus tracks appear in "Duke Ellington live in '58" in the Jazz Icons series, and the latter holds much more material in much better quality.
Buy the Copenhagen recordings and the Jazz Icons CD instead - and you'll be happy!

1.0 out of 5 stars FINE MUSIC - BAD PICTURE, 29 Oct 2007
Louis Armstrong, Trummy Young, Joe Darensbourg, Billy Kyle, Arvell Shaw, Danny Barcelona in concert... the music is standard Armstrong performances from the period, but alas, the picture quality is not very good.
After all it is possible to recognize the participants, but it is not a pleasure to watch.
That goes for the bonus part, too.
