Haven't used this yet, but the quality appears satisfactory and the 'look' of the cutlery is impressive. Neatly packed and promptly delivered. Hope it serves us well at an outdoor wedding buffet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Conclusion of a saga, 28 Mar 2014

This is the final part of a trilogy that has amused and interested me throughout. The trilogy has covered the passage of approximately 25 years of happy times and good food experienced by an English family and their French neighbours. For anybody that owns a house in SW France there will be many points of recognition and identification with Ruth Silvestre's story.
The three books are well written and, while entertaining one, are gently informative about life in the summer in small French villages in the SW of France. I would highly recommend this trilogy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unusual story, 20 Mar 2014

This review is from: Disobedience (Kindle Edition)
I read this unusual story in one sitting. I am familiar with the Hendon community and wondered what other readers would make of references to Jewish practice as both Hebrew and Yiddish vocabulary was used without explanation and with no glossary.
However, the concept of people who abandon their roots and cannot find a happy place in the world, nor are they at ease with themselves, is a universal theme and rather well done in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Evocative, 20 Mar 2014

The trilogy evolves into a story not only of warm relationships and good food, but also of the transition from youth to middle age and finally to old age as reflected in the lives of a French and British family who are neighbours. The writing is accomplished and reflects the detail of daily life in a small French community in the SW of France as seen by a British family who purchase a holiday home which they visit during the summer months. Ruth Silvestre very accurately records my own experience of home owning in the Dordogne [slightly north of where she lives] down to the invasion of wire chewing stone-martens [fouines] and the array of glorious food set before guests at weddings. I especially liked Ruth's descriptions of the plants that grew in her garden and the culinary accomplishments of her friend and neighbour, Claudette. Ordinary people bathed in an golden sunflower light.

5.0 out of 5 stars A sweet inspirational story, 12 Mar 2014

This is the story of a Civil War veteran who is chosen to man a base for intergalactic travellers. He is unable to interact with many Earth citizens, but maintains a friendship with a couple of the local residents in his American rural location as well the various travellers that arrive from space en route to other parts of the galaxy. Set against a background of incipient global warfare, Enoch Wallace would dearly love to share some of the amazing revelations and insights that he has recorded through his extended lifetime. Events unfolding in the galaxy help him to change his view of his future part in the Way Station's importance both to Earth and to a wider sphere of influence.
Gently and humanely written, this story pleases me as much as when I first read it when I was 15 years old-50 years ago! The technology described is surprisingly prescient.

This author [pseudonym?] shows an in depth knowledge of the Golders Green lifestyle and tells the story of a distinct, but not widely known, subset of Jewish community life. I found it thoroughly interesting.

This was an inconsistent text which contained quite a lot of unnecessary vocabulary, but lacked any progression through the language.

A thoughtful account of guilt and love with many well written passages. This book certainly deserves to be better known.

5.0 out of 5 stars Required reading for prospective adoptive parents., 16 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I thought this was an excellent 'blow-by-blow' account of the process of pre-adoption and the first year of placement. It seems that very little has changed of the procedure in the last 25 years and very much of what Ms Hallett wrote [rather well] reminded me of my own experience of adopting little girls. I think it should be recommended reading for all social workers as well as prospective adopters, because it truly gives a flavour of some of the joys and a few of the pitfalls. But at the end I would have loved to have known if Beth married her Mike and sailed off into the sunset! However, life and memories of the past for adoptive parents and children never ends quite that neatly...
