10 years in development: a solid game but few improvements, 20 May 2012

I'm going to be very methodical and objective in my review. Just facts here!
9/10 - Graphics are gorgeous and stylised, and the levels are packed with little details. Some animations are a little ropey
1/10 - 99% of the characters are poorly-written, self-righteous, 1-dimensional and really unlikable. Their constant 'quipping' as you play gets right on my nerves
4/10 - Story is basic, but that doesn't mean it's bad. Unfortunately it follows the (previously mentioned) unlikable characters
5/10 - The pre-rendered cinematics are amazing but few-and-far-between. The stylised 'watercolour' cinematics are lovely, but don't feel like much of a reward for completing quests
8/10 - Music is atmospheric and unobtrusive, however I haven't noticed much variation so far. Audio is satisfying and helps further enhance the atmosphere
7/10 - Gameplay is solid and fun. Unfortunately many bugs, a cumbersome UI and random difficulty curve make it frustrating to play at times
1/10 - This scores a point for just having an online/co-op mode. The rest of the online features, implementation and use is completely awful. Poor servers, poor maintenance and constant disconnections.
In conclusion, Diablo 3 is pretty good. There aren't many Action RPG's that cater for non-hardcore players, so in this sense it fills a gap in the market. However having been in development for 10 years I expected more. Graphics aside, there is nothing I consider an improvement on its predecessor (Diablo 2) and things have taken a step backwards. Various aspects have been 'simplified', which unfortunately has resulted in quite a fiddly and unintuitive UI. Characters are unlikable and the difficulty curve is all over the place. Additionally, it is riddled with bugs and you have to log-in to the nightmarishly unreliable Blizzard servers to even play the single player campaign. You may buy this game but chances are you won't be able to log-in to play it. Or you'll get constantly kicked out.
My advice... don't buy it now at full-price. Wait for 6 months until it comes down and all the bugs have been patched. You might just get some enjoyment out of it.
