Life is great.
A true masterpiece in high technical standards.
Billy Wilder at its best. A comedy in a prisoner's camp. Would you believe? What would you expect? After 20 minutes a boring story with many repetitions.
NO! This is great and more than that. You got all you might expect from genius. Splendid plot (the end!!), interesting characters and "deep" thoughts.
How is it possible? This is entirely due to the "usual" wilderian type of scenarios, based on many characters, important and secondary, all contributing to a perfect comedy machinery. What B W does so well is to distribute various "moods" on his actors, each taking in charge part of the plot, of the varied atmospheres. HOlden is fantastic as a cynical prisoner bargaining with the enemy. NOt to mention Otto Preminger himself, and the captain of the camp.
In fact, the recipe is that nobody is treated as secondary. BW knows that the devil is in the details.
Great picture quality and the sound was well reprocessed, with much presence. All is there waiting for us. Well, for you.

For years, I've enjoyed this movie tremendously. This is to say that I expected a lot from this new blu ray edition.
Well, well. As others as noticed, the image quality could have been better, to say the least. I compared with the DVD edition and this is much better, but, given the nowadays standards, one would expect more. Colors (not of money) are often a bit washed and details could be sharper.
Anywhere, for those who like this particular billard universe, this is a must see.
