5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent BBC Documentary, 1 Oct. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
So pleased to have this on DVD having hoarded this on my Sky box since it was first broadcast on BBC Four. This is a very well-made and fascinating account of the steps to understand the Antikythera mechanism, found on the sea bottom after a storm in 1901, revealing amazingly advanced Greek technology which requires a reassessment of the technological abilities of the ancient world. Probably created or based on a design by Archimedes the mechanism was revealed as a remarkably sophisticated device for computing the movements of the moon and planets, eclipses etc, all through the use of a complex and precisely designed geared mechanism.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth the price for Terfel and Kaufmann, 13 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have to confess that I don't find the Lepage production convincing (as with the others in the cycle) which seeks oddly to combine very traditional elements (costume for example) with a production (the revolving "planks") which appears to me to amount over the cycle to an attempt to shoehorn the Ring into s concept which does not work for significant parts of the cycle (the documentaries show just how difficult the Met found it to operate). A few striking scenes are not enough to justify the constant use of the device. However, production aside, Kaufmann and Westbroek are wonderful as the Wolsungs (I could listen to Kaufmann singing Winterstürme until the cows come home), as is Blythe as Fricka, and Terfel is as ever superb as Wotan, maybe not always in the best voice, but always convincing, always at the heart of the drama. I do not like Voight as Brunnhilde at all, her voice seems far too shrill with too much vibrato and she can't match Terfel for the acting. Bullock and Terfel at Covent Garden were far more moving in Act III. Interestingly, I watched the Met disks while revisiting the Keith Warner/Royal Opera production last year and, notwithstanding some of the oddities in that production, found it a far more convincing whole and overall presentation of the drama rather than this one. Pity it has not been filmed. Even more so was the stupendous Barenboim Ring at the BBC Proms a few weeks ago (August 2013)- Stemme outshining her rivals as Brunnhilde (and a glorious Anja Kampe as Sieglinde) and as a whole the semi-stages concert performance demonstrating how little production is needed to conjure up the magic of the drama and the music. On DVD, better to get the Barenboim/Bayreuth Ring.

5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome to a new edition of the classic EU law book on Kindle, 26 Mar. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As a practitioner and a user for many years of this book, I'm delighted that it has been provided on Kindle so I can carry it round with my increasing e-library on my iPad. The kindle version is easy to use and navigate and the only minor disadvantages as a law text is the use of endnotes which are less user friendly than footnotes when you are referencing materials and not being able to print off pages. The 1 star review is simply wrong. This is a well-written, clear and comprehensive volume (within the limits of a general text)on a massive subject and has stood the test of many editions.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dreadful production, 4 Nov. 2010
I agree completely with the other reviews, having also attended a performance of this production in Bayreuth in 2008 at which the producer was rightly booed by the audience. It was a huge disappointment. It aims to be clever and controversial but only succeeds in being foolish and crass - it simply fails to understand the great heart in this work. Despite some good individual singing from Vogt and Volle, the production is to be avoided at all costs. It cannot hold a candle to the recent wonderful Welsh National Opera production with Bryn Terfel and Christopher Purves.

1.0 out of 5 stars Go elsewhere, 5 Sept. 2010
I know performance is a matter of taste, but these plush, overplayed performances of the Brandenburgs are the antithesis of the lithe, joyful music that Bach wrote. Even with the use of flutes rather than recorders in no 4, the wind parts are swamped by the string sound and no. 6 almost sounds like a Stokowski arrangement of Bach. Try John Eliot Gardiner on SDG or Trevor Pinnock's 60th birthday recording for the real thing.
