5-Card Major Stayman (MASTER BRIDGE)
5-Card Major Stayman (MASTER BRIDGE)
by Ron Klinger
Edition: Paperback
Price: £9.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Clearly explains why you should play 1 NT with a 5-card major, 28 Jun. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
For a long time I have played NT with no 5-card major and instead relied on Bergen Raises to handle the hands with 15-17 HCP. But, over time, I more and more move towards allowing a 1 NT opening bid to hold a 5-card major and this book is very useful in working out how the partnership will handle this. Next season, we'll play our 1 NT and 5-card major this way.

Kickback: Slam Bidding at Bridge

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful but complex, 28 Jun. 2016

This is complicated stuff that requires detailed study with your partner otherwise you'll seriously mess up. The basic are pretty simple and can be applied quickly but the more advanced features described in the book sometimes (well, more often then sometimes) make you frown. I hope to get my partner into this as I can see then benefits of this scheme over "standard" RKCB.

Yes, most if it is good but large sections are based on playing a Weak NT opening which is very uncommon outside the UK. Either ignore those parts or try applying the tips with adjust HCP ranges to get the best out of them. While setting up a system for a new partnership, many of the suggestions in this book found their way and some already paid out on the first occasion.

Some of the clips are really good, the music is fine but the "home videos" parts are annoying. If you live with those, you'll find this a nice buy.

Clever Plays in the Trump Suit at Bridge
Clever Plays in the Trump Suit at Bridge

Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Complex stuff made a little easier to learn, understand, and use, 13 Jan. 2016

I almost gave up playing bridge while going through this book. There is so much more to know about playing in a trump suit and some of the things shown in this book look impossible to find during regular play. Fortunately I picked up a trick or 2 I can put to practice as I think I could follow the reasoning behind it. Applying them paid off a coupe of times so time to move on and see if this old dog can learn a few more tricks and improve his play. This book will keep me busy for a long time to come and it is worth every cent invested in it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice old wine in a handsomely priced new bag, 13 Jan. 2016
This review is from: Songs From The Road (Audio CD)
This the "Seven Moons Live" DVD and CD in a single package so it is a bargain (check the prices for the DVD). The music draws mainly from the "Seven Moons" album and some older Cream songs (substituting "Sunshine Of Your Love" which was on the Seven Moons album). There are no new musical paths from either of these 2 elder gentlemen but it is a very enjoyable 77 minutes of music.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good songs, poor show, 13 Oct. 2014
This CD proves 2 things. The first 2 Iron Maiden albums are great, amongst the best the band ever released. But Paul Di'Anno no longer is the right person to bring this songs on a stage. The band is competent but I'm afraid Di'Anno isn't fully at the level he used to be a long time ago. Maybe the rough and tough live on the road takes its toll but I think I'll stick to playing those first maiden albums and keeping the fond memories and shelve this album somewhere in the back to never come out again. Just listen to the album and you know why it only gets 2 stars. Paul is turning into a caricature of himself and that hurts.

3.0 out of 5 stars Skip the talking, 5 Nov. 2013
This review is from: Ultralive Ballisticrock (Audio CD)
This Ted Nugent live release is not that different from any other Ted Nugent live release. You know the score, the guitar licks, the songs, not that many surprises there. You know what to expect and that's what you get. But this time it is slightly different: Ted talks, and he talks way too much. I competely disagree with all his right-wing extremist talking, it heavily spoils the experience. If all of this nonsense would have been edited out to let the music do the talking, at least 1 extra star would have been awarded.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor production kills the album, 26 Oct. 2012

This review is from: The Art Of Live (Audio CD)
The songs presented on this album all get executed good to very good, the acoustic set is a nice break but the mix is very disappointing. Most of times Geoff Tate is way to prominent in the mix, meaning that about the only thing you can hear clearly is the vocals. After a while, it starts to get on your nerves and I tried playing with the settings of my stereo set to get a better sound, not being able to do so. As the material itself is strong enough, a nice remaster of this album bringing the instruments to the front or bringing the vocals a little more to the back would result in a far more balanced album and earn it another star or 2.

3.0 out of 5 stars Part works, part fails, 8 May 2012
This review is from: Lost in the New Real (Audio CD)
Like others said earlier, Arjen Lucassen has an enormous catalogue of great music, no matter if it is labelled Ayreon, Stream of Passion, Star One or under his own name. This album "borrows" from all of those. Many of the songs would fit seamlessly in one of the Ayreon, Star One or Stream of Passion albums but they are still different enough to make them stand out as great songs in their own right. If you got the 2-CD version, you got some extra tracks and a bunch of covers. And there is where the pain is. Some of them sound like they are Lucassen originals (The battle of Evermore is a great song in itself and fits in very very well), others sound completely out of place (Welcome to the machine sucks as an original and sucks as a cover). All in all a nice album but there are too few surprises to make it an essential. If you got the download, you can easily skip the crappy songs and compile your own almost perfect version of the album.
