4.0 out of 5 stars Not your usual zombies, 17 Nov 2013

Although some are stories straight from Romero's heart, others give a twist to the familiar theme, and there is even one which, if it had not been in a zombie anthology, I would have struggled to call a zombie short story.
Having said that, they are pretty much all good reads. Recommended

with a vengeance. Great addition to the fold. I know it will happen, but I don't want to ever see Rebus retire. Intelligent, witty, brutal, dark, and light. And that's just Rebus. This complements what I think is the best series of detective/police/crime fiction books out there.

Myths & Legends of the Celtic Race
Myths & Legends of the Celtic Race
Price: £0.00

3.0 out of 5 stars Good intro to Celtic myths, 17 Nov 2013

Some of the historical references are a little wild, and I guess some of the Celtic lineage, but as a first timer I thought the myths, especially the early Irish, were fascinating. He understandably, both in terms of his own Irish ancestry and the amount of written legends he has to draw upon, devotes more space to the Irish than the Welsh myths, but a good read for all that.
Will have to read again if much of it is to stick.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 17 Nov 2013

A very romanticised and sanitised version of the legends - even those that I remember from childhood. Written for a Victorian market, it has not aged well at all.

4.0 out of 5 stars A happy mistake, 17 Nov 2013

Thought it was going to be about british myths & legends, but it was about US legends. Whether they are old enough to be classed as myths or legends is debatable, but they are obviously stories passed down by word of mouth, often with a moral in them, that have been collected and recorded by the author.
Some may dislike the fact that the book was compiled in the late 19th/early 20th century, and the writing style of that time, but delving below that I came across some beautiful, wry, turns of phrase that had me laughing aloud on occasion (I probably missed some them due to to lack of knowledge of the context).
The stories themselves are probably hit and miss for a Brit, but there are several historical references, especially regarding the US struggle for independence, and the civil war, which piqued my interest.
Overall a good, not great, buy
