It sounds like a gimmick at heart, especially when you consider that the audio has been available before in another form. But what makes The Ricky Gervais Show work is the sheer level of fun they have with the animation. It’s frequently very funny, and the passages they choose to animate are very well selected. As a result of that, it draws far more fun out of the material, and works extremely well. There’s a real sense that something is being added to the material with the animated work, and that’s no easy tricky to pull off.
That said, Gervais’s humour remains divisive, although if you enjoyed An Idiot Abroad you’re likely to have a blast with The Ricky Gervais Show. For if you do warm to their comedy, then Gervais, Merchant and Pilkington are on real form here, and are as excellent a triple act as they’ve ever been. --Jon Foster
