looking for a film about a boy who dresses as a girl to escape bad guys. Could be wartime situation, can't recall. Seem to remember snow? Dates back at least to 1970s. Any ideas?

I think this is ' The Triple Echo' starring Glenda Jackson. A young army deserter poses as her female relative and attracts the attention of brutish military policeman, played by Oliver Reed. It all ends badly. Not widely available but there is a dvd for sale on Amazon. Hope that helps.

A. Webb says:
"Some Like it Hot!" Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis adopt drag and join a girl band to escape gangsters after witnessing the St Valentine's Day massacre. A top comedy.

thankyou everybody for your thoughts, but none of these are it--still looking! Think it might have been on TV in the 1970s, maybe BBC2. Definitely a foreign film, not Hollywood, and not Triple Echo. Mystery deepens.

Since everyone else has suggested it, and you have discounted it, allow me to suggest "Some Like It Hot".

I do not remember what it was called, but it was not any of the films named above. It was set during the second world war, and I think it was in Hungary. I will try to do some more research. or maybe these comments will trigger someone to remember.

I'm pretty sure you're thinking of 'Life is Beautiful'. 1997 Italian film set in the Second World War, the father does dress up as a woman in the concentration camp-setting in an attempt to see his wife. Hope this helps!

I take it it's not Poszukiwany - poszukiwana:

Stanislaw works in an art museum in Warsaw; it's not a very well-paid job, and his boss is a bit of a martinet. When a painting is found to be missing from the store room, the boss accuses Stanislaw and gives him 24 hours to return it, or go to jail. Well, Stanislaw is innocent, so he can't return it, and he decides to borrow some of his wife's clothes and her wig, and go into hiding as a woman, Maria. He gets a job as housemaid, although his practical home skills are pretty well non-existent, but a succession of amorous husbands, difficult children, and eccentric bosses drives him from one job to the next. Meanwhile his efforts to keep in touch with his wife lead to her becoming suspicious of his involvement with another girl he is talking to, and then when he kisses his wife amourously, the girl is scandalised to see what appear to be two women kissing. [This was 1973 in Poland...

thanks again all. Mr. Warner might be onto something. Again, def. 1970s-ish.

I reckon it's 'Flight of the Doves' with Jack Wild and Ron Moody. In a full-on gender swap the kids both indulge in some cross-dressing to escape the clutches of their evil uncle-who also dresses up as a woman at one point..and it's in the 70's...set in Ireland..so a bit foreign too.A tranny must have written this film.Three cheers for the tranny!

Its unlikely but was it Love Exposure? Its a Japanese film and the main role is confronted by a gang when dressed as a woman.
