Six years after it was first announced, rumours are rife that Square Enix has cancelled Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

Kotaku claims to have word of the cancellation from "several sources", saying it was announced internally within the last few weeks. In the weeks leading up to the decision Square is said to have "folded" the game's development into another title - most likely a numbered, full FF outing.

Those plans are also said to have been scrapped.

The publisher has apparently refrained from publically announcing the cancellation for fear of denting its share price.

When pressed, Square Enix said simply that it had no further information about the title at this time and refused to clarify whether or not rumours of its cancellation are true.

Concerns regarding the game had already been rumbling following its no-show at last year's Tokyo Game Show and subsequently at E3 in June.

Sorry i should have said that its a rumour.. it was a bit of a deception on MCV's part for not putting "rumour" in the title.

But this sounds most likely true.

Squeenix have been terrible this generation. They're lucky they made the astute move to buy SCEidos a few years ago, as that acquisition is pretty much all that has been propping them up since then.

wouldn't be surprised if it was cancelled - i kind of hope it is so that they can move on to getting the FFX HD finished and maybe make a vita exclusive FF.

Wouldn't say they've been terrible, more they've taken on more than they could handle. Ideally they should of moved onto Kingdom Hearts 3 after FFXIII and laid the ground work for FF15 for next gen machines, this would of netted them a higher profit and kept people happy.

Ideally, they would want a few portable games in development as they're doing now but leaving it at one 'big' RPG at a time.

Apparently not cancelled after all:

"Last week some pretty convincing rumours emerged that six-years-in-the-making action role-player Final Fantasy Versus XIII had been cancelled, with many of its ideas and assets being folded into work on Final Fantasy XV.

The rumours were convincing if for no other reason than almost nothing has been seen of it in those six years, with the trailer below being the only real hint as to what kind of game it is.

So convinced did the Internet become that the game was cancelled that Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada was moved to comment on Twitter. Naturally he did so in Japanese, but according to website Andriasang he said that he'd just taken part in a `periodic meeting for the game'.

Apparently he also mentioned that `the quality of the cityscape demonstrated during the presentation could make you lose your footing'.

The rumours of the game's cancellation were given a further boost because it was not at E3 last month. It's not due to be at Gamescom in August either, so all eyes will now be on the Tokyo Game Show in September.

And yet Wada doesn't seem to have hinted at when anyone other than him will see the game. Although you'd have to assume that despite Square Enix's obsession with secrecy even they'd see the wisdom of showing some sort of proof of life.

I'm guessing then development has shifted to next-gen and it has probably become a proper FF instalment, or at least had a name change. Calling it vs. XIII so long after the release of FFXIII makes no sense.

they may just call it Final Fantasy Versus and drop the XIII - it would be nice if they could get it out for the ps3 rather than shift it to the next gen; it would make a nice swan song especially if it looks as gorgeous as they say. It seems like it's production will now cost more than it'll make - especially as an exclusive game - so maybe they will be looking at getting it across all platforms?

anyway - i am now more excited about FFX HD :)

If they call it Final Fantasy Versus it makes it sound like a FF beat 'em up

They should definetely go for FFXV

Matthew says:
Personally I think they'd be better off calling it Final Fantasy: *Typical Square name here* they never intended it to be a main series game, so technically calling it Final Fantasy Something would keep the Final Fantasy name, and move it into an unique line of naming.

For example, say Final Fantasy Nova Crystallis.

Most names Square-Enix give their games are ridiculous. They need to grow up and get with the times.
