Among the common genres we talk about in video games, like first person shooters, side-scrollers, and role playing games, we don't often hear mech games listed as one of these basic staples of video gaming. So i have started this thread for the few of us that appreciate those Mech-battles.

Some mech games are in-the-cockpit simulators, some are third-person perspective action games, and some are real time strategy games. What they all share in common is a core concept of walking war machines with pilots.

With the 'Armored Core' series being ever popular, to those that love their Mechs and with the amazing looking 'Hawken' on the horizon, i thought it would be good to source all the latest news on these games on one thread for easy locating. Any other Mech games you are interested in then let us know.

Below are a few of this gen's Mech games, with Cinematic trailer links.

Steel Battalion: Heavy Armour.

If they can get it to be as good as the old game..... oh man.

cool idea for a thread man.

I always wanted that huge Steel Battallion controller for the xbox but was too young to afford it. Did they bring out anything similar for the 360? Though i'd guess that goes against Microsofts "controller free" attitude of late lol.

Missed out the most important one, the father of all Mech games latest iteration which is due at the end of the year

The fact it's a F2P online only game is a bit disappointing though as I was hoping it would be a full retail release :(

Nice link Cerberus. I missed that one.

Yeah, thought it would make sense White Devil, so we can keep all Mechs under one roof. :-)

The 'Zone Of The Enders' HD Collection is on it's way. The sequel was amazing and the boss Mech battles were quite tricky. I would imagine this wil look awesome in HD. Also Kojima has said he wants to make ZoE 3 for the Ps4. I would be interested in this. Love the series.

I am going back onto 'Armored Core 4 answer' for Co-op and online battle practice and customise my ultimate Mech. ;-)

Hawken is a game I am most anticipating this year. Possibly more than 'Metal Gear Rising'. Hawken looks so detailed and real it may put the manga styled, ZoE into the shadows. Time wil tell..

not usually a fan of this type of game but i did enjoy Front Mission 2 and Ring of Red from the playstation.

Good call with Mech Warrior.. Maybe they are going F2P because mecha is still niche?.

I read the blurb on AC5 and it sounds sweet! you can create factions and invade other players games ala dark souls. Only dilemma now is wether to pre order on xbox or ps3 as it sounds like the game is almost entirely aimed at co-op/pvp play.

"Good call with Mech Warrior.. Maybe they are going F2P because mecha is still niche?."

Probably because their main market will be Japan/the east. F2P MMO's with micro transactions do very well over there, better than most subscription MMO's.

What was the alternate universe mech game on ps2 or maybe ps1 that was set in a world war 2 setting.

Has there ever been a FASA Battletech/MechWarrior RTS ?

Not sure I remember a game like that tbh but mechs in WWII sounds pretty cool. They tried something similar in Sucker Punch with varying effect, and lets face it, that movie was only ever about Emily Browning's lolli outfit :/

Mech RTS? Total Annihilation, Supreme Commander?.... My memory is thinking an actual Mech Worrior rts did exist but I cant recall it at all.

In reply to an earlier post on 7 Feb 2012 12:20:37 GMT
That's going to bug me now cerb, I know the game you mean but can't think of the name of it.

"Has there ever been a FASA Battletech/MechWarrior RTS ?"

There was a Mechwarrior RTS but I don't think it was popular. I think it was called Mech Commander or something similar.

Hmm; doesn't ring any bells. I'm assuming it's not Robotech: Battlecry? I never played it but was always kind of interested in it. Iron Storm: World War Zero is the only alternate war game which springs to mind, but that was an FPS and didn't have any mechs in it.

Cerberus says:
Think it must have been Ring of Red as there was a load of old real ww2 footage of germans running about with CGI mechs added lol.

Trigger says:
Ah yeah, Ring of Red! Another game I was always interested in, but never bought.

In reply to an earlier post on 7 Feb 2012 12:59:12 GMT
Ring of Red was quite good it was supposed to be set after ww2.

Yup, there was Mech Commander and Mech Commander 2 on the PC which came out round about 1999.

Ring of Red is not the best choice of name though is it. :-)

Didn't Lost Planet have mechs in it, or is my memory playing tricks on me again?

In reply to an earlier post on 7 Feb 2012 18:36:20 GMT
Nope. Mechwarrior went F2P because they couldn't get funding for a full retail release. They've been trying for a couple of years, but none of the investors would touch it unless they dual-developed a console version, which in turn would have put the licensing cost beyond reach. So they gave up and fell back on F2P.

I'll be supporting it heavily; if they make enough it'll be easier for them to get funding for the next one...

Lost Planet had what I would class as more power armour or a battle suit than a mech they were like the Landmates from appleseed size wise, I played a little of the first game and grew rapidly tired of it and watched my nephews play the second game for a few minuets and that was enough for me.

In reply to an earlier post on 7 Feb 2012 18:49:08 GMT
Cerberus says:
Regarding MechWarrior I would have thought going F2P would mean they want as many to play it and buy in-game content with real money if possible... so maybe they should have picked a different engine over CryEngine 3 ?

I think the persistent online thing of AC5 sounds really ace. I had no idea they had this kind of mode - but now I'm even more excited! Time to spread the word, I need co-op partners!

In reply to an earlier post on 7 Feb 2012 19:09:14 GMT
Yes. The persistent online faction plot of Mechwarrior Online - with effective command capabilities - is absolutely the biggest thing I'm looking forward to about it. Bring on the company-scale warfare...
This is likely to be awesome.

only mech games i've recently played have been on the psp with its various armoured core games - my favourite was the quirky strategy mech game - mytran wars.

i'm tempted by AC5 as From Software are fab :)

I've played Dynasty Warriors Gundam 2 and 3, as well as the old Mech Warrior games on the PC.
But think i'll give Armored Core a miss, unless it's like Crazy Ivan!!!

Hawken's graphics look sublime, it seemingly has taken a lot of influence from The Designers Republic. Even though it kinda looks like its running on Id Tech 5 (Rage) I it actually uses the Unreal Engine 3 which is exciting.
