It might be enlightening to know what sort of reviews get negative votes. Of my 92 reviews, by far the most negged is a 1-star review of the novel "Cold Comfort Farm", which has 5 positive from 25 - that is, 80% of its votes have been negative since I posted it over 2 years ago. I don't take it personally, though, I just put it down to 1-star reviews always getting negged, especially if they're particularly strongly-worded, as that one is.

Can anyone beat those stats for an unhelpful review? What's your "most unhelpful" review, and wherein do you think it has offended the Amazon public?

My review of "Bubba Ho Tep" once had about 9 negative and 0 positive votes. I eventually deleted it and reposted it, in a vain attempt to get into the top 1500.

I stand by the review though. I will sit by it as well on request, but I'm keeping my clothes on.

0 from 9. That looked on course to get an impressive score all right. Sadly, we'll never know. I'd love to know what is the "most unhelpful" review on Amazon, ever.

Why? Does it matter?

No, I guess not. I thought it would be interesting, but maybe I'm alone in that. I like stats. And lists.

There will the others to better these figures, no doubt.

And Pundit wants to know what everyone does to make a living. Oh well. Priorities I suppose...

This is 16/93 helpful - which is pretty unhelpful when you think about it. My own review of the same book is currently the most helpful one and probably one of my more successful reviews. http://www.amazon.co.uk/review/R367US462IR1OF/ref=cm_cd_pg_pg1?ie=UTF8&cdPage=1&asin=1844084841&store=books#wasThisHelpful

My own most unhelpful one was my review of Julia Stevenson's - though it wasn't one star - Letting Go of the Glitz The true story of one woman's struggle to live the simple life in Chelsea my review is 11/22 though it was more like 15/45 before Amazon changed the system in March.

I studied acting in the year below her at university - nice girl, she was. She did some of the voices on Spitting Image, if I remember correctly. The book sounded like a pile of cack though ;)

It was in my opinion - though I gave it 3 stars because it was the first book for years which had annoyed me to that extent!

In reply to an earlier post on 20 Jul 2010 22:45:39 BDT
Yeah, nothing divides opinion like "The God Delusion". That one with 432 negatives would take some beating for volume. That's quite possibly the most negged review on this site, I'd say.

Devoted follower votes can often give a heavy neg to a critical review.

My most heavily negged review was a very disappointed 1* for Nation. It was so soporifically different to anything else he had written, and so turgidly leaden I found it almost impossible to read. And I have read and enjoyed all his other books! I ended up with something like 2/26 before I bowed to fan pressure and deleted it.

Um, you do realise that was supposed to be a kid's book?

In reply to an earlier post on 21 Jul 2010 10:01:32 BDT
Oh yes. I'm not proud. I'll read anything, well, almost anything that keeps me awake.

It was so dense and heavy that most kids I know would give up after the first five pages.
As I said in my review, it felt like someone else had written it. The deft and subtle "Pratchett touch" was missing.

In reply to an earlier post on 21 Jul 2010 15:23:18 BDT
Yeah, someone with a devoted cult following like Pratchett is always a dangerous one to criticize, as their fans don't tend to be tolerant of dissenting opinions.

I think my worst ever review (for neg votes) was of a DVD of the TV series DEXTER. Basically, I didn't think it was THAT good (I think I gave it 3 stars, can't remember) but it was the title that did it. I've since changed it, but it used to be "This isn't as good as everyone says". I have a feeling that people often only read the review title and nothing else, and pass judgement on that.

I think I received about 20 negs, although there were a few positives as well. On the upside, at least most or all of the votes were legit (i.e. not troll votes) but it was very clear that I wasn't allowed to criticise DEXTER at all, in much the same way as Terry Pratchett fans resent criticism of their idol.

Nice one, Mr P. Your review doesn't qualify because it's on Amazon.com, but good work all the same. And you also had a load of comments on said review deleted by Amazon. Nice.
