British TV opened using 405 Lines in London, November 1936;
But This coming Monday July 1st 2012; 45 years ago British TV had the Biggest Leap Forward in its development since 1936.

Well that was in Colour, but did not happen to 1969.
First Colour Broadcast was a Sport, but what ?

The FA Cup final, Wimbledon, The Grand National or one of the other big horse races?

As Both Events are in May or June, they were not broadcast in Colour until 1968,

Never mind 45 years ago, what's happening now that's so amazing? Is it the completion of the digital switchover - because that's been a bloody nuisance?

I fail to see how colour was that great an advance - except that it made set designers work harder (some of the sets in the B/W days wouldn't be out of place in minimalist theatre). And as for digital.... I bought a box, and had a great time watching QI, Have I got News For You, Mock the Week.....until I found the same episodes repeating over and over, Feature films appearing on different days on different digital channels but with advertisements every 10 minutes or so...and adverts synched across Freeview so that if you channelhop all you get is adverts adverts adverts - back in the early '60s and '70s it seemed that there was less TV but what there was, was better. And I recall MGM cartoons being shown in the early '80s which you can't even see now on DVD.... frankly I wonder I bother with a tuner when a monitor and DVD player would do.

R A Caton makes a good point, although proportionately there was as much dross in the 60s & 70s as there is now. However, because there is just so much television nowadays the dross seems overwhelming. I also think programmes I used to enjoy have been spoilt by over-exposure and constant repetition on channels like "Dave".

wow some guy thinks black and white tv was better? no way!!!! the programs were fine but even today the lack of colour is not a good thing , unless you were using black and white for effect. but monocrome is as flat visually as mono is for listening in many regards.

I don't think he said black and white TV was better Michael....just that the quality of the programmes back before colour TV was better. Given the tripe that is shown now, he has a very valid point.

Thanks Mr Payne - Not all the old stuff was better of course (but the rubbish tends not have survived!) Mr Dobey - don't judge B/W tv by the quality of todays archive releases; they are often kinescopes that were filmed during transmission off a slow phosphor CRT - they started out flat and with inadequate blacks. I recall that the 405 line B/W pictures back in the day looked crisper and with better contrast than a contemporary B/W 625 line believe it or not - possibly because of the coarser black grid inbetween the lines!. A good B/W picture is better than a bad colour picture - quite a few colour sets in the old days had the contrast and colour set way too high with orange skin the order of the day and a film copy of those would be ghastly.
The other thing that needs to be remembered is that in the days of 3 channels max shows would get audiences in excess of 12 million instead of the 6 million which people would kill for now - there is no incentive to make good shows if they aren't seen to have a quick financial return. Reality shows are cheap... endless footage of police and customs people are cheap.And cheap is the order of the day, now.
