Alex, if you could ask about particular DVDs you are interested in... I have loads of crime TV DVDs, but I just can't check them all, it would take a week, and unfortunately Miami Vice is one of NOT many that I am not interested in. Anyway, what's irritating, subtitles do vary from season to season. An example:

Deadwood (in case somebody else is interested):
Season 1: English and English for hard of hearing subtitles. No other subtitles.

Season 2:
Dansk, English, Norsk, Suomi, Svenska, English for the hearing impaired.

Season 3:
Audio: Deutsch, English, Francais
Subtitles: Dansk, Deutsch, English, English for the hearing impaired, Francais, Nederlands, Norsk, Suomi, Svenska

But you won't start watching it with season 3, would you??????????

Amazon's information in this area is at best so-so and they get little help from some of the companies putting stuff out there,Playback(Retro t.v arm of Universal)are a JOKE- no subtitles on 30 rock,as one example and Revolver(an up and comer)are very poor.
I have perfectly good hearing but sometimes subtitles can really add something and for those people who are HOH there should be a law to make Subtitles compulsory as an option on a dvd release.
An actual law that would be good for many - no chance then!!

I cannot agree more with the the arguments, stated before, both Amazon UK and US are doing a lousy job.
can anyone tell me if "Pie-in-the-Sky, complete-series-1-5" has subtitles?
Neither Amazon nor DVD-subtitles.com give any info on this title.
Feedback will be greatly appreciated

Woolf Marmot says:
Although I am English I live in France for many years and am also somewhat HOH so I prefer sub-titles. The best for me is British DVDs with English sub-titles...but I have found comparative satisfaction in buying "Inspecteur Frost" which can be English (or French) speaking with French sub-titles.
I have "Saisons 1 to 4" and want to buy the others.
I have two questions
1) you say Series 6 -12 "have subtitles YAY" which I presume means that they DO have subtitles. If so, what version do you have so I can be sure to get it.
2) Does "series 6 to 12 mean the same as "Seasons 6 - 12?
For clarification I have "saison 4" which consists of 5 DVDs
The 4th.dvd being "Fun Times for Swingers " and DVD 5 being "Deep Waters". Is "saison" the same as series"?
Would welcome your help and advice based on experience
Woolf

Anita says:
Hi, Woolf,
This is the link to A Touch Of Frost series 6-12 complete at Amazon.co.uk, and this is the box set I have, and English subtitles are available:
A Touch of Frost: the Complete Series 6-12 [DVD]

I do not know, if "season" is the same as "series". I hope so.
It's 14 discs starting with Appendix Man, finishing with Endangered species.

Hope this helps.

Hi,
Do somebody know if Silence Witness, series 3 and 4, have english subtitles?

I think all DVDs should have subtitles, especially for hard of hearing.

It's ridiculous that not all dvd's don't have subtitles (main offenders being playback collection which has no subtitles!) of any kind. It doesn't take up much room on a disc. It should be ruled the ALL dvd's have subtitles of all kinds. I'm not hard of hearing but i know a few people who are, and have missed some films/tv shows on dvd because of this!

Does anyone know if Shameless the complete series 1-5
has english subtitles?

Johnny says:
I agree! I'm not sure if I have problems with my ears, but there are definately problems somewhere on the way between the television and my capability of understanding spoken words. I may hear the sounds, but they sometimes don't make sense without subtitles. I get angry evertime a DVD gets released without subs. 'Who can be that evil?', I think. There are a lot of people in need of such facilities, and since DVD allows us to choose 'no subtitles', no one will be annoyed by them. I have the same problem in Sweden, where I live. I avoid watching movies in my mother tongue, because I know that if I watch a Chinese movie, at least I will understand the dialogue because of the text below. So pleeease, Amazon! Give us information about this!

I do not know about Silent Witness 3 and 4 for sure, but these imports from Netherlands usually have only Dutch subtitles.
Maybe somebody else knows better.

Woolf Marmot says:
Hi Anita
Thanks for your answer.
I have just ordered Frost series 6-12 from Amazon and am waiting for it to come in.
I will tell you if it DOES have english sub-titles.
Something which might interest you: my daughter just gave me Boston Legal DVDs (well over 50 separate chapters). They were in good American English but were doubly enjoyable because they had English sub-titles for HOH as well as sub-titles in other languages. For us, an absolute delight and most pleasurable evenings. But if you decide to watch them start with series one and follow them through chronologically.
If you know anything as good as that (with sub-titles) I'd welcome your suggestions.
Woolf

I've been bugging Amazon for years to put up subtitle info on the product details. I mean, how hard can it be, for God's sake? I was astonished to find that 30Rock for instance had none - so now I can only watch it when the wife (Italian) is out for the evening! Do get your act together, Am.

WD says:
I believe we should all send complaints to Playback. They are the ones releasing a lot of the DVDs with no English subs (Law and Order, House, Monk). Until they do try and order Region 1 DVDs (and use AnyDVD on your computer or search for ways to make your DVD player Region Free) and boycott Playback.

Plus the fact that they put their name in such a huge font on the front covers, what other reputable DVD producer does that?

In reply to an earlier post on 12 Feb 2009 16:31:21 GMT
Anita says:
Another shame for Playback: The Rockford Files. NO SUBTITLES.
I agree about boycott. Maybe that's the only way to get something changed.
