Why are their always typos in Science Forum thread titles?

RAB says:
Is it because the OP's brain is that overloaded with the tricky conundrum they're offering up, or something more sinister?

Is it the Amazon Forum Mafia attempting to discredit their cyber-foes before the mudslinging has even started?

I think it's past time the people knew the truth.

Nice typo ;)

One overloaded brain ? ... or plain old stupidity =P hehe
The downside of being an armchair scientist =D

RAB says:
I can assure you it was purely accidental.

It's because many of them can't leave their role-playing behind at sci-fi conventions and continue to pretend that they're from Cygnae 233-X, where spellings are subtly different to those on Earth.

You forgot the apostrophe in 'title's', by the way.

I saw what you put originally. Just saying.

Kodokushi says:
lol I got confused whether title classes as a proper noun or not .. so changed my mind about three times and settled on deleting haha
I take it apostrophe after the s was right then ?

RAB says:
There isn't meant to be an apostrophe. Monica made a funny.

*eagerly awaits correction*

Kodokushi says:
I see .. it has an apostrophe if it's a plural noun .. but doesn't have one if it's an ordinary noun .. and I haven't got a clue what titles comes under, it's a plural and yet ordinary, so after not really giving one have settled on either haha
FFS why am I even thinking about English grammar at half 11 at night ?! =/
I'm going to bed now and will dream about apostrophes and titles ... yay !!

P.S. According to Word either is fine, no green squiggly line with no apostrophe or apostrophe after (and no red squiggly line from Google for squiggly, I am surprised !!) and yes I am that sad I checked, because it was making my head hurt trying to think ....

RAB says:
"it has an apostrophe if it's a plural noun"

No it doesn't.... It's mainly for ownership and contractions....

Kodokushi says:
It's for omission or possession ... I suggest you get in touch with Oxford English Dictionary then =P

Nyah nyah nyahhhh =) (says me about to be completely blown apart in wrongness hahah)

In reply to an earlier post on 14 Mar 2012 22:41:13 GMT
RAB says:
But all of those indicate possession, which I wasn't doing. Plus your definition said exactly what I said.

Posted on 14 Mar 2012 22:46:56 GMT
Kodokushi says:
But it could be argued that the titles belong to the Science Forum, which is possession.
Anyway .. either is fine, with one at the end or without.
So you keep your lack of apostrophe, I'll have it.
Settled ?
I've got to get up in 5 hours, leave me and my lack of apostrophic knowledge alone !! *shakes fist*
Good night, go grammar Nazi on another thread =P

RAB says:
But the thread is in the Science Forum's possession, not the other way around. That's why titles doesn't need an apostrophe and why Monica made a funny.

Edit: You brought Nazis into it, I win!

Ach, mein Gott. A proper noun is a name: Chicago, Jacob, United Nations. Whether a noun's (apostrophe because that's--and so was that--a contraction) proper or not has nothing to do with apostrophes. Kodokushi's (apostrophe to show possession) OED doesn't say otherwise, I know. There's a journal called Science; if it has a chat-room, it could be called Science's forum if you wanted to stretch it. Only way I can think of my original remark being correct would be if RAB had written something like 'No, it's not called that--that title's wrong', meaning 'title is'. Fetch me the smelling salts before I fall over the brink of despair.

This is why we can't have nice things, Monica.

Und Monica, auch, monica.

Ah, well done, Philip. Should say though that I deliberately left user name in lower-case because I thought (wrongly, at least so far) that doing so would be a clue that I was using a proper noun in wordplay upon an improper one. (Something I couldn't have done in German, come to think of it.)

Of course it is, RAB. Law of compensation. Every time someone uses spell-check for guidance on English usage, every time someone 'proves' his argument by linking to an internet site, vry tm s1 use txtspk 2 post n 4um, another nice thing is cast into that bottomless ravine of despair.

monica: that I was using a proper noun in wordplay upon an improper one.

Must admit I hadn't noticed that until I was halfway through typing the post above, but didn't realise it was deliberate. Perhaps you might try Moniker! :-) Now that wouldn't be so common (or Common?).
