i remember reading this book in the early 80's when i was i junior school. the kids in the story went up in a balloon or some sort of airship with an adult (maybe a professor) and there was a mist that enveloped the planet. when they returned to earth all the people were dead or disappeared i cannot remember which, the only other thing i remember is that they went to the zoo and saw a lion in its cage. i know its not much but does anyone know the title?

D. Adams says:
Doesn't ring a bell to me. Closest I can think of is the Langoliers but I don't think that's what you're after

No not "The Langoliers", this is a novella by Stephen King.

This is like a problem I had with a book read to my class in primary school which the teacher didn't get to the end of before the summer hols. Took me years to finally track it down so that I could buy it and read the end I'd waited years to find out about!
